Falcons Mt. Rushmore voting a seven-man race for two spots

We’ll be closing the week of Mt. Rushmore unveilings with a wide-open chase for two spots in Atlanta.

At 5:00 p.m. ET Thursday on NBCSN, we’ll announce the Mt. Rushmores for the Falcons and Buccaneers.  You can keep voting for Tampa’s, but barring a miracle the results won’t change.  (And, for a change, the voters completely agree with me, as to all four guys.)

For the Falcons, the outcome definitely hangs in the balance.

We made a philosophical decision not to make the results of the Mt. Rushmore voting available in real time, so that you would have an extra incentive to dial up channel 220 on DirecTV (or whatever other cable or satellite provider you use) to see who makes it.  We’ll make a minor exception for the Falcons.

Right now, Deion Sanders (who spent only five years with the franchise) is running away with the top spot.  Jamal Anderson, the face of the Dirty Birds, has a strong lead for place.

The last two currently are a toss-up among seven different guys.  In alphabetical order, they are Steve Bartkowski, Arthur Blank, Andre Rison, Matt Ryan, Jessie Tuggle, Mike Vick, and Roddy White.  Fewer than 800 total votes separates the seven.

The only players clearly out of it are Mike Kenn and Jeff Van Note.

Vote for your four favorites now from the 12 finalists.  The sheet will be pulled from the mountain later today.

  1. I am not a falcons fan, but I voted for Arthur Blank. Since his arrival, they’ve been a competitive organization. Really a great owner.
Even when Vick screwed the team, they were able to not miss a beat and get Matt Ryan.

  2. Ridiculous that Deion Sanders is even on this list. What a sad, sad franchise.

In his 5 years with Atlanta he was only a pro bowler 3 of his 5 years. Two of those years the Falcons finished 6-10. They only finished above .500 once in his time there, and the year they did, they didn’t even win the division.

In his 1 year in San Francisco he was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, a pro bowler, and won a Championship. (still more of a face for the 49ers than the Falcons)

In his 5 years with Dallas he was a pro bowler 4 of his 5 years and won a Championship. Only finished below .500 once. The exact opposite of his stint in Atlanta. And still has a home in Dallas, where his children live.

What a joke. He went into the HoF as a Falcon as a pity move to give you guys something to be happy about. To not only include him in your “faces of the franchise” but to give him the most votes, really is a joke.

  3. Falcons fans should have more regard for Tommy Nobis, and less regard for Deion Sanders who made the Hall of Fame based on what he did in Dallas and SF.

  4. Roddy White better make it or I know one commenter who will be extremely disappointed.

  5. Hard to believe that Bobby Hebert, Morton Andersen, Wayne Gandy, or Joe Horn aren’t on this list.

  6. Steve Bartkowski absolutely deserves to be on the list. Come on, fans, study a little history and see how great he was. Much better than Matty Ice.

  7. What a joke. Vick was a disaster overall for this franchise. Anyone voting for him is a dummy. Anyone older than 35 (and w/ half a brain) would have Nobis, Bartkowski and either Kenn or Van Note as 3 of the 4. Jamal Anderson? Nice career but Williams Andrews was better. Too bad he got hurt.

  8. What?

Deion was a Falcon for 5 years before leaving, and Jamal Anderson wasn’t that good for very long (only 1 particularly brilliant season). I voted for Tuggle, Nobis, Ryan and Blank.

  9. Been a Falcons fan since ’87, when i was 10. Jesse Tuggle was and is one of the most underrated LBs of all-time. NO WAY he should not make it on there. Other three should be (in my opinion) Matt Ryan (best QB we’ve ever had), Jamal Anderson, Roddy White.

  10. I got no problem with anyone’s combination of Blank, Ryan, Bart, Nobis, Kenn, Tuggle, White or Van Note.
Anderson and Rison, you gotta be kidding me.

Huge Problem with Deion or Vick.
Vick almost single handily destroyed the entire franchise. And Deion played 5 years, chose to leave and bad mouthed the franchise who allowed him to play baseball while playing football.
He doesn’t even belong in their “Ring of Honor”. And if Arthur Blank didn’t buy the team and turn things around, Deion would still have nothing to do with the Falcons= HYPOCRITE!
