Sanchez thinks Jets’ QB competition is “an awesome situation”

If Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is unhappy about having to compete with rookie Geno Smith this summer, he’s not showing it.

Instead, Sanchez says he loves the fact that he’s competing, and he considers Organized Team Activities a lot of fun.

I’m having a great time,” Sanchez said. “I’m in an awesome situation. I’m the luckiest guy in the world. That’s how I always feel. I just have a positive attitude. I’m trying to bring those guys along, get guys working hard, study my butt off and prepare each day. Whether it’s a competition or whatever you call it, I’m going to be ready. I’m going to give it my best, feel good about it and move on. Anything on the outside, I just can’t help. We talked about it last week, whether it’s criticism about this or that, or what you’re wearing or who you’re seeing, who cares? Honestly, who cares?”

Sanchez noted that he has been in quarterback competitions before, both at Southern Cal and in his rookie season, when he beat out Kellen Clemens for the job. (Sanchez did not have to compete for the job during last year’s circus-like training camp, as Tim Tebow wasn’t given a chance to earn the starting job.)

“I’ve competed my whole life, whether it was in high school or college, beating out other quarterbacks my first year here playing with Kelle, that’s all I’ve known. So this is nothing new. It’s nothing big or scary. I’m just being myself and doing my very best and that will be good enough,” Sanchez said.

The biggest difference for Sanchez may be that when he beat out Clemens, most Jets fans were rooting for him to win the competition. Now that he’s competing with Smith, most Jets fans are rooting for him to lose.

    Sounds like a cuckold.

  3. thestrategyexpert says: Jun 9, 2013 6:50 PM

How could getting overpaid many millions of dollars to compete for a starting NFL QB gig that one does not deserve NOT be awesome. To say so when it is so obvious is just another negative for Sanchez imo.

  4. FinFan68 says: Jun 9, 2013 6:51 PM

The obvious take away from this is that Geno Smith must have stunk like hot garbage so far and Sanchez knows it.

  5. hehateme2 says: Jun 9, 2013 6:53 PM

This kid is no leader. He doesn’t have the mental toughness to succeed.
    Hope he stays forever.

An honest response would be so refreshing. I hate that these guys feel like they always have to give the “Corporate” answer.

he has 8 million reasons why its awesome. He either starts and gets paid or sits and gets paid.Sounds good to me.

Sounds like he is already auditioning for his new team in the PR department. Can’t blame the guy

    Great attitude and great guy.

Can’t wait for him to lead us to the THIRD AFC Championship game and this time win it!

  14. ketch20too says: Jun 9, 2013 7:09 PM

It helps that Geno Smith isn’t the QB the Jets thought he was.

  15. mec693 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:11 PM

Hate on Sanchez all you want he’s a standup guy who has a good arm and good footwork. The one thing hes struggled mightily with is decision making and even that is a stretch being that he’s never had over 20 interceptions in a season. With a west coast system where your reads are mostly predetermined cupped with an offensive coordinator who always gets the most of his QB’s I see Mark having a big turnaround next year..

No, this is not Rex Ryan.

  17. rajbais says: Jun 9, 2013 7:13 PM

Only because Geno Smith has been less than impressive.

  18. mcjon22 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:13 PM

Yep, there’s nothing more awesome then being so inept at your job that they bring someone else in with the hope that person takes it from you.

  19. jimbo75025 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:14 PM

Face it . $8 million is bargain for an NFL starting QB. Unfortunately for the Jets fans, that QB is Mark Sanchez.

  20. packerbackernj says: Jun 9, 2013 7:15 PM

Isn’t next years 8 mil guaranteed whether he plays with them or not? Sounds awesome to me too dirty sanchez

  21. losanginsight says: Jun 9, 2013 7:15 PM

Sounds like something Timmy Tebow would say.

  22. nflsucker says: Jun 9, 2013 7:16 PM

He must use that positive attitude in believing his receivers are all fifteen feet tall, and that’s why he sails so many uncatchable balls.

  23. ron69 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:19 PM

If i were Mark Sanchez i’d be the happiest guy in the world, surely won’t play and still earn about 8 mill, not too bad of a deal.

  24. stoutfiles says: Jun 9, 2013 7:21 PM

If I was a Jet fan I’d not go to any games that Sanchez starts. Give someone else a chance.

  25. sportsfan18 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:24 PM

For what it’s worth, there are some reports out there that Geno Smith isn’t wowing the Jets so far… shocking as that may actually be…

Sanchez may be positive because he only looks good due to how poorly the others are…

If Sanchez had real competition, he’d look terrible. What’s sad is that those who run a pro football team would still choose to go with the best of the worst when they know or should know that the turd that has “won” out by not stinking it up the most shouldn’t be quarterbacking a pro team…

The new G.M. should have an attitude that Sanchez and his crappy contract are not my problem and I’m not going to waste another year for the team and my first year with him at the helm.

But then I think, well this new G.M. thought that Geno Smith would be good so I guess it really doesn’t matter.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

  26. japmen says: Jun 9, 2013 7:29 PM

He’s just happy to be competing on an NFL squad after the last two years.

  27. thegreatgabbert says: Jun 9, 2013 7:38 PM

Senor Sanchez is forgetting that he didn’t win the starting job in college until his third season. I theenk.

  28. ryann252013 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:39 PM

One question, if Sanchez has a huge turn around what do we do with Geno?

  29. silverandblack052099 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:41 PM

I’m sure he thought he was the luckiest guy in the world when David Garrad’s knee wouldn’t hold up to continue to play in the NFL.

We will see how “awesome” he thinks the QB situation is when he’s benched after week 3. Rex Ryan will not stick with Sanchez through his struggles this season. He knows he is on the hot seat just as much as Sanchez is this season.

  30. camdenyard says: Jun 9, 2013 7:43 PM

    Suuuure he does

  31. mj1818 says: Jun 9, 2013 7:51 PM

Looks like Tebow’s attitude rubbed off on Sanchez. Although he probably hates that he has to compete with a rookie at this stage if his career.

  32. txstaff says: Jun 9, 2013 7:55 PM

Yo Geno, it’s a chin strap, not a dog muzzle!

  33. claymatthewsisonsteroids says: Jun 9, 2013 8:04 PM

It’s awesome that this joke of an organization still thinks I have the talent to compete for a starting job.

    Mark Sanchez

  34. westchiefs5 says: Jun 9, 2013 8:06 PM

What do you want this guy to say? Let’s make everything a story.

  35. theytukrjobs says: Jun 9, 2013 8:17 PM

It is hard to tell from the written quotes, but he was using super sarcastic tone and hand gestures throughout this interview. Sarcasm just doesn’t translate through written word and quotations very well.

  36. harrisonhits2 says: Jun 9, 2013 8:30 PM

Is there any team more entertaining at sucking than the Jets ?

Sanchez better be careful with the money he makes this year and save all or most of it. Seems unlikely he’ll ever make anything close to that much again the rest of his life.

  37. mblue24 says: Jun 9, 2013 8:43 PM

Jets suck. Just face it. They have no QB and no coach. They need to start over.

  38. 480volt says: Jun 9, 2013 8:43 PM

I can’t even believe I commented on this non story……wow…..I must be bored…..

  39. roadtrip3500 says: Jun 9, 2013 8:53 PM

No franchise quarterback would ever think direct competition for his job is “awesome” when he’s in the prime of his career.

Brady, the Mannings, Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger… even the next-tier guys like Rivers, Romo, Flacco, Ryan – all would be downright ticked off if a bunch of other QBs, including a 2nd round draft pick and a guy who subsequently retired, were brought in and told it was an open, even competition for the starting job.

The Giants drafted Nassib and both he and the team acknowledged he will be a clipboard guy for a few years unless he shows he’s a legit number 2, because Eli’s not going anywhere from the starting lineup unless he suffers a serious injury. In contrast, the Jets are effectively saying they have no faith in Sanchez by putting his job up for grabs against McElroy, Simms, and Smith… and if Sanchez is winning, that shows how poorly the team evaluates QBs overall.

  40. 4thqtrsaint says: Jun 9, 2013 9:00 PM

Sanchez has looked at his competition and knows he has the upper hand. And if he’s right, if he’s the best QB on the team, the Jets really are screwed.

  41. jiggy3198 says: Jun 9, 2013 9:10 PM

What else is he going to say

  42. attyken says: Jun 9, 2013 9:11 PM

I can’t believe you are bashing Sanchez for this answer…in Philly we wish Vick would stay positive and not act entitled to something to which he is not!!

  43. mazblast says: Jun 9, 2013 9:17 PM

It’s easy to have a great attitude when you’re getting paid in the high seven figures or more no matter how well or poorly you play, or even if you don’t play. It’s easy to have a great attitude when the boss has your back no matter how well or how poorly you play, and who says wonderful things about you no matter how lousy you are.

Mark Sanchez–It’s like being the boss’ idiot son.

  44. cmdrsmooth says: Jun 9, 2013 9:23 PM

Tebow has ever shot at keeping for a starting job, why isn’t he given the chance to compete? This writer again talks junk.

Must be the Jets fault for not allowing Tebow to compete in the CFL as well.

  45. cwk22 says: Jun 9, 2013 9:27 PM

Hate the jets, but have to believe like me (a Dolphin Fan) their fans have suffered enough each year with a clueless owner and multiple other problems. Would be nice for both teams to get it together and compete for the AFC championship. With the Fins winning of course.

  46. cwk22 says: Jun 9, 2013 9:30 PM

Time for Sanchez to stop talking like he’s not worried and playing good, and actually show he’s playing good! Talk is cheap. Results are what matters.

  47. RexCanCoach says: Jun 9, 2013 9:48 PM

guys, come on you know whats going down here.

Sanchez starts the first 4 games so Geno can learn and then the switch is made.

  48. petedutcher says: Jun 9, 2013 9:59 PM

I will love it when the Jets cut Sanchez and he succeeds elsewhere. He probably loves the competition because it means if he tries hard enough he can finally be free of hack jets fans.

  49. jaggedmark says: Jun 9, 2013 11:58 PM

Sanchez thinks Jets’ QB competition is “an awesome situation”……………..So now we know Sanchez lies as well as he throws interceptions.

  50. pisano says: Jun 10, 2013 12:05 AM

Who is this guy trying to kid, he can’t play his way into the starting job, so he’s trying to bs his way into it. I know the Jets won’t cut him for 8 million reasons, but I don’t think they’ll start him because the fans hate this loser.

  51. jprcox says: Jun 10, 2013 12:05 AM

Sanchez gets paid at the top end of the QB pay scale for being below average, has guaranteed money, and now John Idzik has brought in Winslow to be a bigger distraction than the QB fiasco…

    DUDE – Party on Garth.

  53. ilovefoolsball says: Jun 10, 2013 12:56 AM

For everyone in their division the future is bright. First off you know that Sanchez will probably play at least this year. Then waiting in the wings you’ve got Geno Smith to play against.

You guys in the Jets’ division are set for years!

  54. slick3 says: Jun 10, 2013 1:25 AM

Ironic he should mention “butt” isn’t? That’ll be his legacy.

  55. alphadux2u says: Jun 10, 2013 1:34 AM

Does it really matter? The whole Jets organization is just a ‘butt-fumble’ anyway.

  56. lrjets says: Jun 10, 2013 6:39 AM

    attyken says:Jun 9, 2013 9:11 PM

I can’t believe you are bashing Sanchez for this answer…in Philly we wish Vick would stay positive and not act entitled to something to which he is not!!

    Good and fair answer, attyken.
These other non-Jets fans write the same replies to anything Jets related. If they knew the game, they’d worry about their team’s weaknesses instead of bashing Rex, Sanchez et al daily.
I’d love to know the team the trolls are rooting for.
I do know 75% of them will have teams playing golf in early January.
    They know it too!

  57. rmzthefirst says: Jun 10, 2013 7:51 AM

Haaa haaa, he loves it… Only because he still has a job..!

  58. tsizzlesucks says: Jun 10, 2013 8:09 AM

Yo Sanchize…you suck! Jay-Z gonna be buyin the team and make Geeeeno the starter anyway!

  59. 11inthebox says: Jun 10, 2013 8:55 AM

I’ll just ignore the fact that Sanchez has the right attitude about this competition and that he’s saying all the right things. Instead I’ll say “Sanchez sucks.”

There, now I’m one of the “cool kids” who hates all athletes no matter what they do or say! Yep, sittin’ at the cool kids table talkin’ sports!

  60. richndc says: Jun 10, 2013 9:57 AM

They only printed part of the story. The reason he is so happy is because the coaches commanded those playing in at center to quit washing “back there”. So, now Mark can give himself a “Dirty Sanchez” anytime during practice, which begs the question: where are his priorities??? We already have Rex running about sniffing feet. Now this??? Oy vey!

  61. jpaq68 says: Jun 10, 2013 10:04 AM

What the hell else is he going to say?

  62. ryann252013 says: Jun 10, 2013 11:11 AM

I know I commented on this before but

The thing with Sanchez is he always dances around what he actually want’s to say. Grow some cahones and say this is your job and they would have to pry it from your dead hands, it would make the fans feel a lot better and maybe you would have some actual support from teammates and fans. Confidence is key.

  63. dougydougdoug says: Jun 10, 2013 11:22 AM

Clearly, the Jets only exist to amuse us all. Not with their football playing ability, but with their utter lunacy. It’s like every quote out of their camp was written for The Onion.

  64. tindeaux says: Jun 10, 2013 12:10 PM

it’s awesome because such a qb like Mark can play starting qb for the team.

mark sanchez, aka butt fumble qb.

  65. cdan374 says: Jun 10, 2013 12:53 PM

Sanchez is likely gone after this year unless he has his best season; he would already be gone if not for the cap hit and guaranteed money…

That said, he has proved that if the rest of the team is very good, he can limit the damage that he causes…

  66. pintadera2000 says: Jun 10, 2013 1:05 PM

“just have a positive attitude. I’m trying to bring those guys along, get guys working hard, study my butt off and prepare each day”

Studying his butt off to fumble off of more butts.

  67. immafubared says: Jun 10, 2013 1:36 PM

Hey Sanchez, the two other qb’s on the Packers are actually competing for the backup role to Rogers.
In your case the other QB’s are actually competing for your job. and if successful, you won’t have a job so how good does it really feel?

  68. kanemoney says: Jun 11, 2013 2:51 PM

I keep seeing him running into his own lineman… It’s his legacy
