Despite pay cut, Doug Free says he’s happy

Cowboys right tacke Doug Free got his pay cut in half last month, but he doesn’t mind.

Free, whose pay was reduced from $7 million to $3.5 million, says he’s glad to know that he’ll stay with the Cowboys — who almost certainly would have cut him if he hadn’t agreed to that pay cut.

I’m happy, yeah,” Free said, via the Star-Telegram. “Got to be. Got to stay positive and keep working hard.”

Free said he doesn’t like dwelling on contract details and wanted to get it over with.

“I think both sides got what they wanted out of it. I’m just going to do my best and work hard,” Free said. “I don’t want to look at the business part or the money part. I just like playing football, and that’s what I like to do.”

That’s what Free will do now, without the constant specter of taking a pay cut or getting cut hanging over his head.

  1. LOL, I’d hardly say that $3.5 million dollars is exactly working for free, nor is it especially stupid as far as I can see. He wasn’t going to see $7mil period, so the alternative was to let the Cowboys cut him and play for something a little above the minimum somewhere else. Other RTs of equal worth are still sitting around waiting for a team to sign them.

  2. If Harrison and his agent woulda sucked in their egos, he’d still be a Steeler.

  3. At this time when almost 8% of the country is still looking for work, ?Free should be kissing the ground for being able to get $3.5M and still ranking as the worse RT in the league.
