Four different family members fight for right to raise Zoey Belcher

zoey-belcher

On Tuesday, Zoey Belcher becomes nine months old, under the worst possible circumstances.  Her parents are dead, and four different surviving family members are fighting in court for the right to raise her.

According to the Kansas City Star, the litigants include the mother of Zoey’s late father (Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher), the parents of Zoey’s late mother (Kasandra Perkins), a cousin of Zoey’s mother, and a sister of Zoey’s mother.

The four-party legal battle features allegations that relatives of Kasandra Perkins took Zoey to Texas for Kasandra’s funeral and failed to return Zoey to Cheryl Shepherd, the mother of Jovan Belcher.

Witness and exhibit lists suggest that Shepherd’s fitness will be attacked via “more than 60″ police reports from 1997 through 2012 generated in the New York county where Shepherd resides.

Beyond the right to raise Zoey, the victor also will control on Zoey’s behalf hundreds of thousands of dollars available for her care — which of course carries with it the strong temptation to be an incidental beneficiary of whatever that money can buy for Zoey.

Here’s hoping that Zoey lands in the most loving, stable, and nurturing environment possible.  Also, let’s hope that the losers respect the outcome and move on, allowing Zoey to avoid the turmoil of being caught in the middle of perpetually warring family members.

There is zero chance Jovan Belcher had “Hundreds of thousands of dollars” in his bank account. Someone that stupid to kill his daughters mother and then kill himself is not responsible enough to have saved a dime.

And that’s all you really need to know.

    @broncostevenp

Its not his money. It’s money from the NFLPA dependents insurance policy.

And this is so sad. The story was sad enough to begin with, but family memebers fighting over an orphan’s money is just horrible.

People never cease to amaze me… and not in a good way.

@broncostevenp He’s referring to the donations that came in from fellow teammates, friends, etc. They made sure that she would be taken care of.

Insurance money, some of it through the Players Association. Any deferred money. Survivor’s pension benefit.

Regardless of who gets custody, the league needs to step in and make sure any money coming from it or the PA goes into a trust–but I doubt that they will, or that they can require that Zoey’s interests be looked after. This will probably end up like most such cases, with the custodial parties having parties of their own and the kid winding up penniless as well as parentless.

the Chiefs already decided to pay out the rest of his years salary to his daughter, not to mention any and all money owed to his daughter from benefits paid out through the league. you goon.

I don’t think it’s right that Zoey was taken from Sheppard with the intent to brin her back & they never did.

  9. tformation says: Jun 10, 2013 4:25 PM

Just did the math on this based on the last paragraph in that article. That’s $1.1 million by age 18.

Not hard to see why 4 different people are fighting over that money, I mean, child.

  10. crownofthehelmet says: Jun 10, 2013 4:25 PM

There are couples who would pay thousands of dollars for the right to raise this child. Instead, this family sees a money-grab. Jerks.

I’m if the judge, my first question for the families is “have any of you raised or helped raised someone who murdered someone else” and then removing anyone who raised their hand from contention.

  12. pftjunkie says: Jun 10, 2013 4:51 PM

Well based on the article, it sounds as if Ms Shepherd is not the best person to raise the child if the police were called 60 times to her house. So that leaves the baby’s maternal grandparents, or the baby’s maternal aunt, or her maternal cousin as the possibilities. I do find it odd that 3 people within the same family are fighting over custody, so that does make it seem that some of them are just in it for the money. Let’s hope that the judge is able to determine which one would raise the baby the best, and has her best interests in mind instead of what’s in it for themselves…

Wow! I would never want my parents held responsible for something I did as an adult. You make your own decisions and you and you alone are accountable for those decisions.

This whole situation is really just terrible.

There is zero chance that the “losers” of the Zoey lottery will go away. They will always be around waiting for their chance to make another money grab. I know that I sound very pessimistic about this situation, but power(to handle money)corrupts. If anyone really cared about this little girl, they would put the money in a trust that has withdrawal limits that are regulated by a third party. Zoey is cared for while she is growing up, and if she needs anything over and above the limits, it has to be approved. When she turns 21(or 18), she gets the balance. Good luck, little girl. You deserve better.

Baby Belcher couldn’t give a burp about it.

  16. granadafan says: Jun 10, 2013 5:09 PM

I hope the judge orders most of the money to be put away in a trust where the money cannot be touched until she’s an adult (typically 25 for trusts) and out of the influence of the money grubbers. Then we’ll see how many are willing to raise her.

I hope the court can appoint a responsible accountant to be a trustee and look after Zoey’s finances until she’s 21. Otherwise, there might be nothing left for her. I imagine the Chiefs organization and the league will administrate the funds that they raised for her.

Wonder who, if any, are fighting for the child and not the money. Sad situation.

  20. bestforzoey says: Jun 10, 2013 6:10 PM

    I know the maternal family.
If you know nothing, most if the case with the previous comments, then don’t say nothing.

Did you ever think that maybe the maternal family didn’t ‘pop’ up out of the blue to get custody, the family has been there all along.
The best thing to do is be respectful enough to stay out of the news for Zoeys sake. so she won’t have to read all about it as some say.
They didn’t come forward because of the money
To hell with the money, if it comes with Zoey then it’s for her future, her well being.
At Kasi’s funeral you DID NOT witness the tears, the hugs with Zoey or Becky, Kasi’s mom nearly falling down with every step from her not eating because her daughter wasn’t. The family did, and the family is suffering tremendously without Kasi.
Angela, Kasi’s sister…holding baby Zoey, soaked in tears knowing this precious baby will never be held by her beautiful mother again.

Kasi by no means was a bad person, she was a human being who was VERY loved, as will her daughter continue to be loved.

Jovan’s family is in pain too, this is for the BEST interest of Zoey, not the best interests of the money.

Please, if anything we should only post prayers for all involved.

This is horrible for both sides of the family.

I was the legal guardian of a young girl who received a substantial insurance settlement. As her conservator, there were strict limits on how the money could be spent, and there was an annual filing with the court, listing all assets and expenses. No sports car for me.

  22. jacksrants says: Jun 10, 2013 8:24 PM

To best for Zoey I have to say something isn’t right here . I am the member of a very close family that has endured our share of tragedy .

One thing is for sure . My sister would not be fighting with my mother over custody of a late siblings child . It’s not right . If they can’t settle this amongst themselves maybe they shouldn’t be trying to raise the child .

And a cousin coming forward over the grandmother and the Aunt is also not NORMAL . Normal families don’t act this way . You can spin your story anyway you want . Of course people were crying . It was a tragedy .
This fighting over the child is BS and normal people wouldn’t engage in this behavior .Sorry . Someone does not have the best interests of the child here .

  23. darkglobe1 says: Jun 10, 2013 8:44 PM

Each of these litigants thought Javon was their money train, now they think it is a nine month old child. Sad.

  24. bestforzoey says: Jun 11, 2013 3:55 AM

To Jacksrant, I understand where you would think that. Yes Kasandra’s sister, cousin and grandma are parties in the battle for custody but not against each other. The point is for the maternal family to have custody. Zoey will have all of the maternal side jointly doing the best for Zoey.
As raderapologist said regardless if who, the money is monitored for Zoey.
And the maternal aide has really with a lot of personal grief in their own lives.
The maternal side knows loss and grief.
darkglobe1, you have no idea…you do not know ‘these people’. I am for the maternal side but can say that no matter the grievance or LEWD comments made by outsiders, Zoey is loved by many.

I cant believe all of you missed this:

“Witness and exhibit lists suggest that Shepherd’s fitness will be attacked via “more than 60″ police reports from 1997 through 2012 generated in the New York county where Shepherd resides.”

Folks, I think we have found Titus Young’s real father!

  26. bestforzoey says: Jun 11, 2013 11:13 AM

Actually, this was a choice by the family not to trash Zoey’s family in by the media like the have chosen to publicly say Kasi was cheating on Jovan. She went out with her friends. Need to keep in mind who it was the police found and let off the hook. Sitting in his car outside his girlfriends apartment all drugged and drunken.
Who was with his girlfriend while Kasi was with child.
The whole point here is by both sides Zoey cherished and loved.
