Gregg Williams remains confident.
While many thought he’d be radioactive after taking the fall in the NFL’s investigation of the Saints’ alleged bounty program, the Titans defensive assistant said Monday he never doubted he’d get another job in the league.
Williams talked to reporters prior to an OTA practice, and said: “Never once had I even thought that. Never once.”
“I never have been worried about that in all honesty,” he replied when asked if he thought all eyes were on him, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean. “I have never been worried about that. I am just happy to have a chance to continue to do it one more time. One more time, each year, . . .
“In the National Football League it is a production business and we are all on one-year contracts. I am very, very happy I get a chance to do it with familiar people.”
Williams found a familiar face this offseason who was nearly as desperate for help as he was for a job. Under-the-microscope Titans head coach Mike Munchak and defensive coordinator Jerry Gray were still playing when Williams was an assistant with the Oilers, so there’s a familiarity there as well.
“I feel like I am home,” Williams said. “I guess I was pretty young when I was coaching those guys, . . . So that is fun. It has been great for me to see just how good a head coach Mike Munchak is, . . . And the fact I get to work with Jerry again, we are so much on the same page.
“One of the things we’ve done for all these years, the years we’ve been apart, we traded so much information back and forth, . . . It has just been a real good match and a real comfortable match for everybody.”
Of course, Williams is being brought in to restore some life to a bad defense. The early returns have been good, but because of his history, people are always going to be watching Williams, whether he expects it or not.
