Rod Woodson at Steelers minicamp as a coaching intern

A candidate for the Steelers’ Mt. Rushmore is working with the team at this week’s minicamp.

Hall of Fame cornerback Rod Woodson has joined the Steelers this week as a coaching intern, a brief return to coaching for Woodson after spending the 2011 season as the Raiders’ cornerbacks coach. In 2012, Woodson was out of coaching after the man who hired him, former Raiders owner Al Davis, died and the organization made wholesale changes. But despite his first coaching job coming to an end in an abrupt way, Woodson said he learned from that job that coaching is what he wants to do.

It was a great opportunity,” Woodson told the Steelers’ website. “Unfortunately Mr. Davis passed away midway through the season. We didn’t play the way we wanted to play down the stretch. We finished 8-8. The defense played sporadically throughout the year. But it was a great experience and gave me the learning curve of coaching. You have to look at the game differently.”

Frankly, it’s surprising that Woodson has to settle for being a coaching intern, rather than getting a job on some team’s staff. Woodson was respected both for his physical gifts and for his intelligence as a player, and he seems like he’d be a natural as a coach. He’ll surely have plenty of wisdom to pass along to the Steelers’ defensive backs.

If he’s half as good as a coach as he was a player, he will do fine. Maybe he’s noticed how good Carnell Lake is doing as Steeler DB coach. Those two working together again will benefit the Steelers.

The last paragraph is written by someone who never played sports. Coaching is a different animal than playing. It’s why the NFL isn’t just a bunch of older players coaching, coaching is a skill within itself, it takes a TALENT that does not include running fast 40’s and throwing far. If that were the case, there would be a glutton 0f coaches, do we see that?

The Steelers really need to go back to the block-style numbers.

I doubt a defensive coach can find a better place to hone his skills than in Dick Lebeau defense.

Not sure how he will improve Polamalu’s game, but Woodson was a stud who applied fundamentals and technique to become a fall of famer. He is a great communicator and student of the game. Hope he can help the Steelers, even though I’m not a fan.

NFL Network got rid of Rod, and they kept Marshall Faulk, Jamie Dukes, and Warren Sapp?

No wonder I don’t waste my time with it anymore.

I wonder why Woodson retired a Steeler and wore a Steeler hat when inducted into the Hall of Fame when he won his only ring with the Ravens.

Rod Woodson is an intelligent, well spoken man who was a great football player. Seems like he should have the tools to impart his knowledge and understanding of the game to others. I would think any secondary (Lions) could benefit from his tutelage.

Rod Woodson, a true steelers legend….One of my favorites….Welcome home as a coaching intern Big Rod.

This guy wasted so many years with the disappointing Steelers and didn’t taste a real championship until he finally signed with the Ravens, the current Superbowl Champions.

Well you finally are seeing what I have been say for the last 2 years the pit team and the team from Cleveland ( ravens). That both hc are frauds and can not coach. Heck if I was handed a team that someone else built before I got there I to could win at least one SB. Well time to pay the piper and the piper wants wins and these 2 Clowns wont be able to deliver the goods. Both of these Clowns will be out in 1 to 2 years. FRAUDS.!!!!!!!

Well said scoobie. Larry gets a little over zealous with his hatred of steelers and ravens. Jealousy fuels a lot of fires….Tomlin and harbs are legit…Larry knows diddly !

Wasted? The guy was voted to the NFL 75th Anniversary Team and is one of the best CBs to play the game. And that was because of what he did as a Steeler and not a Raven or Raider. What an ingorant comment. Ask Woodson if he wasted his years on the Steelers.

Don’t be upset by the current raven troll. He wasn’t alive when Woodson played. He is just doing his usual trolling …stupid non sensical trash when you see his handle you can expect nonsense. He should be banned as a nuisance .

  23. blackngold4life says: Jun 12, 2013 3:59 PM

He’s in the HOF as a STEELER..all that matters

  24. crownofthehelmet says: Jun 12, 2013 11:13 PM

He should suit up and play. The way the secondary played in 2011 & much of 2012, I certainly would welcome him.

I’m happy to see Rod Woodson back where he belongs! Welcome back to Steelers nation Rod!! He will help this team with his knowledge

Do the coaching interns actually go out and purchase the Gatorade or do they just give it to the players?

  27. Deb says: Jun 13, 2013 7:41 PM

Thrilled to have Rod Woodson back on the Pittsburgh sidelines in any capacity. Although Lambert runs him neck and neck, he’s still my favorite Steeler.
