With Michael Crabtree out for the forseeable future with a torn Achilles and Mario Manningham questionable for the start of the season while recovering from a torn ACL, the San Francisco 49ers have found themselves somewhat short at the wide receiver position.
Despite the recent step forward from second-year player A.J. Jenkins, the 49ers still are looking to add to the position. They did so Wednesday with the signing of former Oakland Raiders receiver Brandon Carswell.
Carswell signed a two-year deal with San Francisco. The team terminated the contract of tight end Cameron Morrah in order to make room for Carswell on the roster.
Carswell signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of USC last season. He was released by the Raiders at the end of training camp and spent limited time on the team’s practice squad. Carswell caught 40 passes for 386 yards and two touchdowns during his time at USC.
