Donte’ Stallworth officially returns to Redskins

Quintin Demps, Donte' Stallworth AP

After wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth took part in Tuesday’s minicamp practice with the Redskins as a tryout player, coach Mike Shanahan talked about Stallworth as if he was officially a member of the team.

He wasn’t then, but he is now. Stallworth sent out a tweet calling himself “beyond grateful and excited” that he agreed to a contract with the Redskins for the 2013 season. It’s a return engagement for Stallworth, who caught 22 passes in 11 games for the Redskins in 2011.

Stallworth played one game for the Patriots in 2012 and caught a 63-yard touchdown pass before injuring his ankle and landing on injured reserve. His status for this season was put in some doubt earlier in the offseason when Stallworth and his girlfriend were badly burned in a hot air balloon accident. Stallworth made a quick recovery, however, and impressed the Redskins enough to earn a ticket to training camp.

With Pierre Garçon, Josh Morgan, Leonard Hankerson and Santana Moss all on the roster, Stallworth won’t be guaranteed much more than that with Washington. That may not be much, but it’s still a lot better than having your butt catch on fire.

You understand that a contract for the 90 man August roster is not the same as a contract for the 2013 season right? I guess, technically they’re the same, but he has little-to-no chance of making the 53 man season roster

Hankerson isn’t elite, Moss is aging (though still affective) and Garcon and Morgan are always hurt. He should find a nice spot on this roster, and hopefully for him he will.

This development confirms how weak and thin WAS is at WR — and how concerned they are about it.

Survival of the fittest. Nothing like competition to improve the productivity.

Not a good thing to be signing past their prime receivers. If you get excited about Henderson or Stalworth joining your team, that’s not saying a lot for your team.

Another good addition for the Skins. Everyone knows he can stretch the field. Him along with Henderson could be a good combination. I still think Henderson is the better player and I wish the Saints wouldn’t have gotten rid of him but they are moving on to the younger guys.

To be fair, I am a Skins fan, but teams gets criticized for this all the time and it’s kind of ridiculous. It’s called “kicking tires” and it’s not the same as “signing a player”. Teams bring in aging vets to see if they have any juice left in the tank, or, at very least, to push the younger guys in training camp. Worst case scenario, the player gets cut, and it’s like he was never even there in the first place. Every team brings in bargain bin vets all the time– there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain, and any team that didn’t do it would be foolish.

Almost as foolish as not understanding what it means to kick the tires on an an aging journeyman.

I like both Stallworth and Henderson but skins should of never got rid of Jabbar Gaffney. Loved his facepalm too.
