Geno Smith might get package of plays if he’s not starting

AP

Geno Smith is going to get his chance, one way or another.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday his rookie quarterback was going to get all the reps with the first offense today, as part of their quarterback rotation, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

They’ve advertised this one as an open competition with Mark Sanchez from the start, so that’s not necessarily a surprise.

What was a bit eye-opening was Ryan saying that they might also put together a package of plays specific to Smith even if he isn’t the starter.

While Smith is mobile, he’s not a perfect fit to run read-option plays, as he was more of a downfield passer in college.

And trying to gin up a way to get him on the field even if the alleged meritocracy of a competition doesn’t put him there as the starter sounds vaguely familiar.

It’s almost as if they tried it a year ago, with another quarterback who wasn’t ready or able to do the job on his own.

  1. I dont think you can blame them for at least trying this – In theory this is a good idea.

They are just trying to get the most out of their new QB and get Sanchez off the field – Fair enough.

  2. It’s almost like having a vote for something and then disregarding the results and declaring your own winner.

  3. And this is why the Jets struggle. Commit or let the kid sit. All this does is split the locker room.

I don’t remember a “package” of plays of Kaepernick. Dude sat, and then he was the man.

  4. Bringing in another QB to run read-option plays doesn’t work well. It’s not a surprise. The guy comes in, the other team is prepared for any play in that package and that’s the end of it. They shouldn’t swap him in and out and ruin him.

  5. The jets found another guy to fill Tebow’s role of bench warmer. That is the same terminology that us when they traded for Tebow. The Jets have only one package dis-function. Good luck to Geno Smith.

  6. So once again if (big IF) Sanchez gets going good, he’ll have to come out? Isn’t this what screwed him up last season?

Just because you don’t remember it, doesn’t mean that it was not the case. Kaepernick saw the field for 22 plays – 9 passes and 13 runs – over the course of the first 8 games last season, when Alex Smith was starting.

  8. Everyone assumes Rex is talking about a package of plays for Gino. It really is a package left on Gino’s front door mat in the form of a brown paper bag that stinks and is on fire.

  9. After they fire Rex, are they going to bring in the college of coaches to run the team*?

  10. I see Smith winning the job. We have seen what Sanchez can do can we really expect a different result? Rex is coaching for his job. I really don’t imagine the Jets doing much passing anyway, run the ball play good D. They will most likely win 4 or 5 at most anyway.

  11. All I’m getting from this is another situation like Tebow. Rex Ryan clearly needs to be fired, and picked up by another team simply as a Defensive Coordinator. Never gonna match Daddy’s success.

There’s nothing eye-opening or surprising about this at all.

Ryan is essentially saying if Sanchez stinks it up he’s going to make sure Smith is far enough along on some of the playbook to have at least a chance he’ll do well.

I think that was the obvious situation from the moment they drafted Smith.

  13. I don’t remember a “package” of plays of Kaepernick. Dude sat, and then he was the man.

well Kaepernick DID have a package last year before he took over, just not his rookie year

  14. Ryan also stated that Geno Smith would receive a cool headband like the one Mark Sanchez wears.

  15. Kaepernick did have packages before becoming full time starter.

Unfortunately, I trust Harbaugh more than Rex to know what are good Packages. Unless we are talking about Food packages , of course, Rex expertise is second to none.

  16. when it comes to media attention, the jets is an outstanding organization that does that.

  17. We’re going to call it the JayZ illuminati package.

It’s going to start off in the triangle formation.

Big brother is gonna go in motion from right to left, then the leader of the formation will collect as much information about the defenders as possible before the start of the play.

The key to the play is deception. So they’ll have the refs throw a few false flags (they’re in on it too).

If it’s successful they’ll make slaves of everyone on the defense, and in the stadium, and the world.

  18. I hope so very much they give Tebow a chance to run one in on the Jets goal line defense.

Nobody deserves to jam it down the bumbling Jets throats more than Tebow does. And i’d be shocked if Belicheck being the good coach he is doesn’t do just that. Motivation goes a long way.

  19. They’ll cut Sanchez in camp and sign/trade for a veteran stopgap like Hasselbeck or Kyle Orton or Chad Henne to start this year and mentor Smith. They’ll still be 4-12.

  20. Rex Ryan ruined a once promising Mark Sanchez, never gave Tim Tebow the slightest opportunity and will now get Geno Smith’s career off to a horrible beginning.

Why is this guy still coaching the team?

  21. If he’s not ready throwing him in with the lack of offensive talent will ruin him. Let him watch .. learn.. maybe he can be a franchise qb.. I dislike like sanchez immensely.. but if the kid ain’t ready sign a veteran.. to compete with sanchez. Its a lost year anyway

  22. I thought we were supposed to learn from history. Apparently not Ryan. I’ll never understand the attitude of pulling your #1 QB off the field for a gimmick play.

  23. A lot of you guys are missing the point, every QB has a basic set of plays to learn from in there first year and there most likely simple plays with complex reads. Once again, the media blows this out of proportion this is just a way to set up a learning system for Geno Smith..get off the jets back the fans are sick of the coverage and the circus is in boston now.

  24. Jets fans may be sick of the coverage, but Rex isn’t. If he’d learn to shut his hole, the Jets would be better for it.

  25. It’s amazing that so many people on this site commenting on these stories do not know anything about football — how is it the Tebow package if Sparano was fired in January???

  26. OK. Let’s see if I can get this straight. Geno, the guy we hear who is so impressive in camp, a student of the game, good play manager will work himself into a temp position behind Sanchez.

My mind can no longer handle the Jets circus.

I did guess that Geno had a weakness aka Travaris J and that was reading defenses. Could be right still?

    …and I stand corrected—several times actually.

  28. “It’s almost as if they tried it a year ago, with another quarterback who wasn’t ready or able to do the job on his own.”

Right, it was all Tebow. It had nothing to do with the fact Rex wouldn’t let Tebow or McElroy see the field even if they were the second coming of Tom Brady.

  29. As usual, horrible reporting of the jets organization by twisting rex ryan’s words. Listening to the press conference, rex hardly hinted this would happen. Mole hills are not mountains.

  30. “It’s almost as if they tried it a year ago, with another quarterback who wasn’t ready or able to do the job on his own.”

keep up the nice cheap shots and stay classy dude!
