Brandon Carswell tears ACL during first practice with 49ers

Injuries are continuing to take their toll on the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver position.

With Michael Crabtree out with a torn Achilles and Mario Manningham questionable for the start of the season as he returns from a torn ACL, the 49ers signed former USC and Oakland Raiders receiver Brandon Carswell on Wednesday.

Carswell didn’t last one practice with the 49ers before suffering a serious injury of his own.

According to Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury, Carswell suffered a torn ACL during Thursday’s practice.

“It was a real kick in the gut,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said.

The injury could hasten the signing of Austin Collie by the 49ers. Collie had a workout with the team on Thursday and is looking to return to the league after a knee injury and repeated concussions have forced him to be sidelined for significant portions of his four seasons with Indianapolis.

Harbaugh said they will sign another receiver prior to training camp. Whether Collie ends up being the choice remains to be seen.

“It’s still ongoing,” Harbaugh said. “There’s still a few more things we want to have checked out.”

Man that sucks. Hopefully the team pays for his surgery and rehab. If not this dude has atleast 100k in medical expenses coming his way. Hope they take cae of the guy.

As much as I hate him…… maybe they should bring back TO lol. This team has had some serious bad juju with the WR position since he left. Maybe a brief return will release the voodoo. Eh on second thought nah I’m good without him

Where’s the editorializing about how Harbaugh must be practicing his players too hard? Or does that only apply to certain team’s players tearing their ACL’s at non-contact OTA’s?

Bam Chancellor just followed Austin Collie on twitter and now he’s out 6-8 weeks with a concussion.

I’m a Packers fan and I can relate to the injury bug. I feel for ya niners fans! You are the team to beat this upcoming year and I believe that we’ll both compete for the NFC championship. This being said, for god’s sake sign Collie! The guy has a ton of talent and I know with all the media news surrounding concussions its a risk but the guy has signed a waiver for any future liability related to it. He just wants to play, has had a string of bad luck, and the media could end his career because of politics. Guy’s a beast, he’d help the team and I’d like to see the Pack play the best team out there with the best players they can get.

Isn’t Brandon Lloyd still out there? Is it because he would ask for too much money that the 49ers are not giving him a shot?

    Randy Moss, line 1
    Terrelle Owens, line 2

Might want to start stretching the ACL more SF.

Man…I really wonder how much T.O. has left. Can’t be worse than Moss.

Haha. 49ers are done. Stick a fork in them.

Brandon Lloyd or Roscoe Parrish would be ok I guess.

    Ok…I give up…

We need to ask the Seahawks who they get their HGH from.

If they would sign Collie over T.O. proves he needs to just move on and retire

  20. exboomer says: Jun 14, 2013 7:47 AM

Don’t these guys strech out before practice?

  21. nflgreedleague says: Jun 14, 2013 10:06 AM

    OK enough comments about stretching!
To support the ACL you build the muscles around the joint, especially the quad. It’s definately a training issue but more about weight training then anything else.
But teams that don’t do their offseason conditioning have already lost, right Coach Harbaugh?
Per his self righteous comments about the Seahawks I assume that not one of the 49’s have ever done PED’s while Harbaugh has been there, hard to believe.
