Injuries are continuing to take their toll on the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver position.

With Michael Crabtree out with a torn Achilles and Mario Manningham questionable for the start of the season as he returns from a torn ACL, the 49ers signed former USC and Oakland Raiders receiver Brandon Carswell on Wednesday.

Carswell didn’t last one practice with the 49ers before suffering a serious injury of his own.

According to Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury, Carswell suffered a torn ACL during Thursday’s practice.

“It was a real kick in the gut,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said.

The injury could hasten the signing of Austin Collie by the 49ers. Collie had a workout with the team on Thursday and is looking to return to the league after a knee injury and repeated concussions have forced him to be sidelined for significant portions of his four seasons with Indianapolis.

Harbaugh said they will sign another receiver prior to training camp. Whether Collie ends up being the choice remains to be seen.

“It’s still ongoing,” Harbaugh said. “There’s still a few more things we want to have checked out.”
