Bryant McKinnie says he’s in his best shape in years

Bryant McKinnie AP

Ravens offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie hasn’t exactly been known for showing up to training camp in great shape. He’s generally been known for eating too much and working out too little.

But McKinnie says things are different now.

McKinnie, who was held out of the start of training camp last year because he wasn’t in good enough shape to practice, has been more involved in offseason work this year and told the team’s website that he’s in his best shape in years. (Not that that’s saying much.)

“I feel like I’m in pretty good shape and I’m doing a lot better,” McKinnie said. “I’m far ahead than I have been the past two years.”

McKinnie said he’s lighter now than he was last year and plans to lose a little more weight before training camp starts. With better conditioning, he believes he’s poised to have a Pro Bowl season.

“I still need to drop a little lower,” he said. “But it’s definitely better than it has the past two years. I’ll continue working on cardio and stretching, but I’m just focused on getting better.”

For McKinnie, getting slimmer is a good step toward getting better.

Yeah, sure. Oddly enough you don’t hear anyone else saying what great shape he’s in.

Make sure to add this guy to your broke after football list. Wait he is actually broke now while he is still playing. This guy better hope he stays healthy and productive enough to play for another five years or his finances will be in ruin.

    Round-ish

Nice to see him beginning to act like a real professional heading in to his 12th season. Congrats!

I’m confused. Shouldn’t PFT somehow be relating this “news” to Tebow? Like, how much more McKinnie weighs than Tebow….or, how Tebow was rumored to have seen McKinnie eating a big mac. Hacks.

  7. filthymcnasty1 says: Jun 13, 2013 7:56 PM

That’s because he lifted a weight.

  8. mediasloppy says: Jun 13, 2013 8:15 PM

Got to see it before I believe it. Heard that same drivel in MN only to watch him show up at camp too unfit to practice.

  9. ravens4life says: Jun 13, 2013 8:19 PM

If it’s true Ravens will have one if the best O lines in football…as proven by Joe’s historic SB run. You know it’s true

    Cody’s been eating McKinnie’s cheeseburgers.

Of course you would say that. You want to have a job this year. Actually show up in shape. You couldn’t do it when you were younger, what makes anybody think you would now. You had potential you peed down the drain with you laziness. You could have been a beast!

  14. camdenyard says: Jun 13, 2013 9:20 PM

I’ve seen enough pictures of him on the team website (OTAs, Super Bowl ring ceremony) to know he’s lighter. He looks to be in great shape actually.

  15. thestrategyexpert says: Jun 13, 2013 9:29 PM

So in other words he admits to ripping off the Vikings and did he also lie to them while he was there about what kind of effort he was putting in?

I hate when athletes say, ‘best shape I’ve been in in years’ or ‘best shape of My life’ …you are being paid millions to ALWAYS be in the best shape of your life!!! As hard as you worked out this year…that’s what you should’ve been doing your whole career. Insead of patting yourself on the back, you should be annoyed that you wasted years of your career

  17. hawkstradamus says: Jun 13, 2013 9:52 PM

I’ve been a huge fight fan for years. And anytime a older slightly past his prime fighter comes out and proclaims to be ” in the best shape of my life” they get whooped every time.

Since he switched his training routine from swinging metal pipes to lifting metal bars with weights on the end, its done wonders for him.

He even switched his diet from raw tuna from the love boat to green salads.

Talk all you want, but this guy was lights out” in the post season; and a major factor in the Ravens winning it all.

    @ravens4life

Well, the o line did loose Birk, you know that guy who was the center…..

No guarantee that that next man up will produce to the same level of play.

This could prove to be a weak link….

  21. Joemontanaflacco says: Jun 13, 2013 10:16 PM

He’s going to be grabbing tired old Steelers by their throats and tossing them out of the stadium. Once fans see how worthless their defense is against him, Dick Lebeau will be history.

  22. gripless says: Jun 13, 2013 10:21 PM

Does this mean he is only 150 pounds over weight.

  23. sterling7 says: Jun 13, 2013 10:28 PM

    “Round” is a shape!

    His tummy’s nickname is Zeus.

  26. st1llerz1 says: Jun 13, 2013 11:51 PM

What he didn’t mention is that his “best shape” is a big lumpy tub of goo…

  27. len462 says: Jun 14, 2013 12:13 AM

Technically he could be 370 lbs with big flabby man-boobs and be in the best shape he’s been in years.

  31. mackcarrington says: Jun 14, 2013 3:24 AM

At least this guy is still playing football in 2013. The Bills drafted Mike Williams from Texas over this guy and only got 4 useless years out of him.

  32. iluvbears says: Jun 14, 2013 5:56 AM

Would have been nice if he took his job seriously all of those years he was starting in Minny. He could’ve easily been a top five LT if all he did was try a little harder.

  33. kw93 says: Jun 14, 2013 7:17 AM

Starting left tackle in the NFL that has zero drive for anything other than having (can’t say making) and spending money.
Roundish pile of goo that has the physical ability to play one of the hardest positions in all sports for 12 years, not to mention a Super Bowl ring.
Imagine what he could have done if he had any work ethic or pride in his craft.

But we are right to judge him.

  34. jtbsteeler says: Jun 14, 2013 11:02 AM

The Steelers defense outplayed the Ravens bubblegum defense twice last season. I remember Harrison getting another strip sack against this fatboy last season in Baltimore.

    Charlie Batch…Holla

  35. scoobies05 says: Jun 15, 2013 8:54 AM

oh how the mighty have fallen. all the steeler fans have left is regular season wins. i was told that bragging about regular season wins is for losers. my memories of 2012 include the ravens winning the superbowl

  36. Nofoolnodrool says: Jun 15, 2013 11:06 AM

Scoobie you are becoming such a fanboy… Fallen nah…. Six rings is what I remember.
