Jets add Winslow

Kellen Winslow AP

They took a little time to make a decision, and now they’ve made up their mind.

Tight end Kellen Winslow is a Jet.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it’s a one-year deal.

The Jets took a little time to make a decision because of Winslow’s chronic knee problems.  After the debacle resulting from the decision to sign quarterback David Garrard (who retired due to a knee problem), the Jets wanted to be careful.

Winslow returns to the NFL for the first time since September 2012, when he had a cup of coffee with the Patriots.  The fact that no other team was clamoring for Winslow’s services likely means it’s a deal for the veteran minimum salary.

Such poison he’s ruined his daddy’s name.

And he’ll be hurt, too. “Mark the tape.”

  3. canadianbucsfan says: Jun 14, 2013 5:32 PM

Coming from a bucs fan who saw this selfish player for 3 seasons, you jets fans better pray that he doesn’t make the final roster. All this guy does is complain if he doesn’t get the ball, doesn’t matter how many defensive players are around him. If he doesn’t get the ball he starts getting into the young QB’s head. This resulted in Freeman throwing a bunch of INT’s that were passes directed at Winslow. If Geno is the starting QB and win-SLOW the starting TE.. many INT’s for the rookie this season

Another “Character” signing for the Jets.

  5. brownspower says: Jun 14, 2013 5:36 PM

They’ve got to be kidding. They really do want to be laughed at.
    Only the Jets. HAHAHAHAHA !!

  6. catquick says: Jun 14, 2013 5:36 PM

He’s more or less been retired two yrs. what kind of splash do the Jets think he’ll make? No one wanted him, even the TE hungry Pats. Rex is showing panic. Are they that bad with pass catchers? The guy can’t block, so, it must be for receiving.

Will Sanchez buttfumble into the soldier?

  9. strokeytheclown says: Jun 14, 2013 5:39 PM

This may mark the beginning of an NFL record where a player signs with 32 teams in 32 days.

  10. alphadux2u says: Jun 14, 2013 5:42 PM

Isn’t this the same guy that compared himself to our soldiers in the Middle East, declaring himself a “warrior”? Please. He couldn’t make it through the chow line without getting “hurt”.

  11. jakec4 says: Jun 14, 2013 5:43 PM

Jets digging through the old scrap heap again looking for anything that can catch a football (possibly being too generous in assuming the Jets have anyone who can accurately throw a football).

  12. garyman1 says: Jun 14, 2013 5:50 PM

When you’re trying to rebuild, isn’t it usually better to bring in more physical and character type guys ?

  13. chargerdillon says: Jun 14, 2013 5:53 PM

    HE’S AN EFFIN SOLDIER!

Soldier of the second string that is

    Not a good start

  15. harrisonhits2 says: Jun 14, 2013 5:58 PM

Jets version of “being careful” -

Rex – Hey Kellen do your knees still hurt ?

Winslow – No coach I feel great !

    Rex – Sign him !!! Now !!!

  16. mec693 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:00 PM

A viable passcatching option!? WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE

  17. spedman24 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:03 PM

Great signing for NY. Zero downside in this one….if he is half as good as he used to be he will be twice as good as Dustin Keller

  18. banger60 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:16 PM

I will predict 1st week injury, possible preseason, out for the year.

  19. bigbluefan11 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:16 PM

But, what does this have to do with Tebow?

  20. donnymacjack says: Jun 14, 2013 6:18 PM

Ironic that he is willing to sign for the vet minimum after apparently being let go by Seattle last preseason because he wouldn’t take less than the contract that came with him in the trade from the Bucs.

Once you got none of those big checks coming your way, a bit less can look pretty damn good. :)

  21. ilovefoolsball says: Jun 14, 2013 6:22 PM

Will he be signed by Master P since he’s a TRU SOULJA?

  22. 4thqtrsaint says: Jun 14, 2013 6:22 PM

    Perfect fit.

  23. jmorand47 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:24 PM

I like Winslow, don’t get me wrong. But he’s definitely not a soldier anymore.

  24. mikebrownistheworstownerinprosports says: Jun 14, 2013 6:27 PM

Winslow was a great TE at one point. Seems injuries really took their toll.

  25. pisano says: Jun 14, 2013 6:27 PM

Now if they can find someone to throw the ball to him, if Sanchez is the QB the only one that’ll be getting the ball is the opposing teams defensive backs. Good luck Kellen on your blocking assignments.

  26. philk0731 says: Jun 14, 2013 6:29 PM

The JETS…where careers go to die

  27. firstclasspack says: Jun 14, 2013 6:38 PM

If it is for the league minimum it’s not a bad deal for the Jets. Let’s be honest, they’re not winning the superbowl this year so if they get a TE that can fill the roll for the season at that price then why not. There were no top TE’s available and even if there were it wouldn’t have made sense for the Jets to sign a top player at that position when they clearly have more important needs. It’s a good move to fill the spot for this rebuilding year and you never know, he may put up decent numbers if Sanchez can actually get the ball to him.

  33. cmoney20 says: Jun 14, 2013 7:37 PM

Signing Kellen Winslow is a guarantee to keep your teams wins low

  34. peanutele24 says: Jun 14, 2013 7:38 PM

Love how nobody on the comment section can be optimistic and to empty headed to realize we are in a rebuild mode.

I mean jesus if Barry Sanders was still playing and the Jets signed him all of you would scrape to the bottom of the garbage bin to find something to rip about him, some of you need sun.

  36. oldbrowndawg says: Jun 14, 2013 7:49 PM

Watched this dude in Cleveland go from promising rookie, to stupid idiot who launched himself over a set of bike handlebars, to crybaby diva who ruined an entire locker room (with help from bray on Braylon Edwards). Good luck with this one, Jets fans. You’ll see. This dude can no longer play. He’s all fizz and no gin.

  39. dlk47823 says: Jun 14, 2013 8:51 PM

The Jets are going to the West coast with Mohrniweg this year and its nice to have a receiver type tight end to go along with Cumberland.
With Ivory, Goodson, Powell, Kurley, Holmes and Hill, the Jets are giving allot of targets for Sanchez or Geno. The ground and pound is gone, good riddance!

JETS ADD WINSLOW- TO THE DISFUNCTION

  44. hidden202 says: Jun 14, 2013 10:07 PM

What people don’t understand about this signing

    A. it’s the vet minimum so if he even became a problem, they could release him since it’s just the vet minimum. There isn’t much money tied to this deal. low risk high reward situation.

    B. If the Jets didn’t sign Kellen Winslow, the starting TE job would’ve been between Jeff Cumberland, Hayden Smith and Conrad Rueland. Ask yourself how many of those names you recognize.

  45. buffalose says: Jun 14, 2013 10:41 PM
