Patriots seem to concede Putin didn’t steal Kraft’s ring

The story of an effort to avoid an international incident in 2005 has created an international incident in 2013.  Sort of.

But now, after Patriots owner Robert Kraft explained that Russian president Vladimir Putin stole his Super Bowl ring and Putin’s spokesman claimed it was a gift, the Patriots have tried to put the matter to rest by conceding, apparently, that Kraft’s tale of being strong-armed for the trinket is shtick.

“It’s a humorous, anecdotal story that Robert re-tells for laughs,” a Patriots spokesman reportedly said.  “He loves that his ring is at the Kremlin and, as he stated back in 2005, he continues to have great respect for Russia and the leadership of President Putin.  In particular, he credits President Putin for modernizing the Russian economy.”

So it sounds like Kraft doesn’t actually believe that Putin stole his ring.  Or perhaps Kraft has Googled “Alexander Litvinenko.”  Or maybe Kraft is aware of the army of Russian bears who can survive a direct impact from speeding cars.

  1. Kraft has “great respect for Russia and the leadership of President Putin”.????? If no one thought that Kraft was full of “Krap” before, there is no doubt now that he is.

  2. Let this be yet another lesson to the Patriots organization. The truth will always come out.

  3. This is an organization that lied and downplayed how much they spied on other teams. If you believe it was 1 game agains the Jets you are a fool. So not surprising the owner flip flops back and forth on this story too. Liar, loser organization who cheated to win SBs. They wouldn’t have even gotten to those games without cheating and terrible calls by referees Kraft probably paid off – Brady’s fumble caused by Woodson.

  4. Alright chowder heads, you better put a muzzle on that senile old man of yours. We don’t need to be pissing off the Russians..

  5. @Jhein23 can I borrow your drugs?

Spygate was about an ignored memo and Goodell proving his nuts had dropped and that nobody was bigger in the NFL then him. If you believe otherwise then you’ve been watching too much ESPN along with the 2004 Steelers.

Side note: Kraft is clearly losing it.

  6. Kraft needs to stop whining about something that happened 8 years ago. If he didn’t have the balls to say something as it happened, then he certainly doesn’t have any ground to keep griping about it 8 years later.

  7. Patriots owner nearly started a Cold War with his idiotic “anecdotes”.

    The Tebow circus continues…

  8. This story is getting stupid now. I’m sorry if it was my ring I woulda gotten it back when it happened or got killed tryin. But don’t call someone out and then when they say that it was a gift back down. Grow a back bone. Demand your ring back if it bothers you. I felt kinda bad for Mr. Kraft at first but now I don’t.

  9. I don’t understand how you draw the conclusion from that quote that the ring was not stolen.. The only conclusion I drew was that Mr. Kraft is so rich that losing $25,000 is nothing more than an amusing story to him (case and point Haynesworth/Ochocinco). Putin is still a psychopathic thief.

  10. Why are we still kissing Putin’s (|) ?
Kraft is saying he ‘gave it to him” because he knows he’s never going to get it back.
Putin taking the ring is nothing compared to what he has stolen from his own people.

  11. I bet Dennis Rodman could get the ring back. He did such a great job while in North Korea.

  12. Putin has his precioussss and he wantssss it!!!!!

And with that, the Gollum joke beats the Yakov Smirnov joke. Sorry, icdogg.

  13. Kraft probably got tips on how to spy on other teams from the KGB and the ring was payment for services rendered. That is why the government and the league want this kept quiet.

  14. Sounds like someone got a phone call and was given a script. Now read this to the media or the IRS will be so far up your sphincter you’ll wish the KGB had just killed you. Comrade.

  15. @ jhein23

Actually, you are the fool for thinking that there are people out there who think Spygate was just the one game against the Jets.

As one person said earlier, it was about an ignored memo by the new Commissioner’s office, who wanted to show the first offender of a no longer “acceptable” practice what would happen if you cross the new sherriff in town. Remember that WHAT was filmed was not and still is not illegal.

  16. And seriously enough with the cheating/spying nonsense. It was years upon years ago and the patriots still dominate every year. Yes it’s been awhile since we won the bowl again but every year we are a threat and we came closer to a perfect season than anyone has ever since the fins or probably will ever again. So all you other fans I got two words for you

  17. This is easily my favorite story of the year. No other story is even within 20 centimeters of this story. Please give us more! Putin smash!!!!

  18. It is not unusual to exchange gifts with eastern Europeans. Many countries view it as a custom. Mr. Kraft should have been aware of this and write the ring off as a business expense. He can afford it. It is a little goofy after all of these years to bring this up now.

Still I do not trust Mr. Putin and his government.

  19. I believe Kraft is cool with his ring being at the Kremlin like I believe parents were cool with their kids sleeping at Michael Jackson’s house.

Someone called up Kraft and reminded him that getting him his ring back is less important than getting a Russian mobster to help us topple Syria.

Like everyone else is saying … Kraft needs to put on his big boy pants and get over it.

  20. Patriots should concede that THEY stole all those other teams’ rings during spygate.

  21. Vlad takes the ring, and the crew here on comments makes Kraft out to be the bad guy.

    Idiots.

  22. Can’t trust a word either of them says, so I laugh at them both.

On CNN.com they said that the ring is kept in the Kremlin library, which is either a sign of respect or Putin put it on display to laugh at Kraft. Anyway, funny story!

  23. Soviet Amerika….

    Government Limits You…

Of course we talking bad about Russia now since they aren’t our ally anymore. I stand with Russia helping Assad against the FSA(Terrorist being) Armed with our taxes! US & Israel aren’t happy because its only making their efforts of kicking Assad out of power that more difficult! It’s not hard to see the last 10+ yrs we’ve been invading every Muslim country for their resources and to keep them on a Private Central Banking system! The world sees who’s the bad guy! It’s us and its Israel!

  24. It doesn’t seem like anyone believes that this could have been an actual joke and the Patriots are telling the truth. Didn’t this story first emerge from the New York Post? There wouldn’t be any funny business coming from a city that is the rival of Boston, eh? It’s not like a reporter could have taken parts out of a speech and reported it that way, keeping the reporter clear of slander, but not telling the whole story, maybe? It would be nice to have an audio or video of the entire speech before we just believe what some headline says, or maybe we just want to believe what we are told?

  25. I kind of agree. The story is worth more than the ring (having a few to spare doesn’t hurt).

How many guys have super bowl rings? Granted, not a ton.
But how many guys can tell a story about the time Putin stole their super bowl ring while you have a drink with them.

    Worth every penny.

  26. Somebody (I want to say Mike Silver) has been telling this story on KNBR for years now….. exactly like how Kraft described it. (I think Silver or Brian Murphy was there.)

When I read the post yesterday, it was a story I’ve heard many times on “The Muph and Mac Show”. I have no doubt that Kraft’s recent account of events was exactly what happened.

  27. It really is remarkable the dislike people on hear have for Mr. Kraft. You fools do realize he was the absolute key to ending the lockout right? As his wife literally lay dying he put the fans first and was at the meetings. No not because of greed. One reason is Myra told him to so the players, and stadium workers could get back to works other reason is his complete love of our favorite sport. Yes the lockout hurt his pockets as well but he has plenty of other extremely profitable businesses so he was in no way desperate. The reason he was so integral to the meetings is the amount of trust both the players and the other owners have in him, he was the perfect negotiator. For the cheating/camera pinheads what part do you think Mr. Kraft could possibly have played in that? Bill runs the football side and Mr. Kraft runs the business, so that hate is misplaced. I am not naive enough to think the lockout would still be going on, however who knows what would have happened if he didn’t have the love for the game that he does. So if you love football the way you say you do then you really shouldn’t hate Mr. Kraft. Oh yea and he is the only owner with a new stadium that was built without taxpayer money, so there’s that too. But you’ll probably continue with your ignorant hatred.

  28. I’ll put my money on Kraft was unprepared to follow the protocol of meeting Putin with a proper gift.

Protocol dictates that Kraft should have had a gift of historical or unique value. Putin thought the package of a dozen disposible razors with the bow on top was a gag gift.

  29. As much as I wanna give my usual (deserved) pats hate, I have something more important to address…

YO THAT BEAR GOT MESSED UP! HOW IN THE HELL DID IT JUST GET BACK UP LIKE THAT?!?!

  30. “It really is remarkable the dislike people on hear have for Mr. Kraft. You fools do realize he was the absolute key to ending the lockout right? Mancrush much?

  31. First he spews that brainless hogwash about Tebow and now this. Note to self: do NOT speak with the press after third Martini. p.s. I hear there’s a circus in town!

  32. Serves Kraft right if Putin did steal the ring. The pats stole it from the Rams-Panthers-and Eagles.Spygate astericks are in everyones record books except Goodells.Too bad no one respects him either pat fans.GO JETS!

  33. This story is only out there for us to avoid knowing what’s really going on with Putin arming Syrians and saying “that they eat the flesh of their enemies”

  34. @jhein23 – you mad, bro?

You guys are awesome still talking about spygate, the fakest “scandal” in American history. Let the bitterness and the jealousy go. It’ll feel great.

  35. This is getting pretty weird. Kraft extends an offer to The Tebow Circus and then in the same week throws out a Helter Skelter Putin-stole-his-SB-ring story? If I were Tom Brady, I would be looking for the exit.

  36. Everyone knows Putin is an old fashioned bully….sadly for anyone who has had anything to do with him, he’s a bully who has huge power.

  37. Big Tim let it go man. It’s all they have to squawk about while the Pats bowl their team over.

  38. I’m going to err on the side of caution and assume the ex KGB agent probably stole the ring and Kraft has been told to stop talking about it.

  39. Maybe Mr. Kraft couls go to Las Vegas an d buy another one from the guys at “Pawn Stars” Im pretty sure they still have the one featured at the begining of the show

  40. @raider23mike

You’ve got to be the least informed person on the planet. Why would Israel want to get rid of Assad? You obviously are good at polly-parroting, but thinking, not so much.

  41. Oversensitive bunch of pansies. Who hasn’t embellished a story or two, retelling it for laughs?

Forget the president of Russia taking a diamond-filled Super Bowl ring, if your drinking buddy pocketed your lucky lighter you’d be talking about it for years while bugging him to give it back.

  42. Putin said he’d only give the ring back if the NFL reversed the tuck rule and gave the win to the rightful owners…the Raiders!

  43. Has anyone botherd to mention how stupid the original story sounds? Why would Putin give a $h1t about a ring like that enough to “strong arm” it? He’s the leader of one of the worlds largest diamond exporting countries… It would be more like Putin to laugh at being offered such a trivial thing, he probably only accepted Rob Krafts gift out of politeness.

  44. Is it so far fetched that a group that is willing to cheat to win is led by a man willing to lie for attention?

  45. Sorry no sale. I believed Kraft the first time.

Anyone cold enough to order the anything-but-a-hostage-rescue at Beslan (334 hostages killed, including 186 children) *IS* cold enough to palm a ring without looking back.

  46. Ahhh, another Pats related article and another string of ridiculous comments by the bitter and jealous fans of NFL teams not named the Patriots.

For all of you that can actually find two brain cells to rub together, and by looking at the majority of posts I realize that’s a select few, this whole “story” originated in the NY Post where the sports editorial section is comprised of a collection of absolute buffoons, and the author Bart Hubbuch is the worst of the lot. I’m guessing Billy B wouldn’t give him the time of day when Hubbuch worked for an Ohio newspaper back in the day and therefore he’s found a home as a hack with the Post writing garbage about the Pats.

They CHEATED (that is two accurate words!).

  48. My estimate of Patriots position….It is the NY Post’s fault because they should have known not to write about Kraft using Putin and his reputation to get a few laughs.

I wonder what Bellichek said to Kraft…Daxxit just put on a hoodie and shut up.
