Donald Driver: I’d come back if the Packers asked

AP

Donald Driver has retired from the Packers. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t un-retire.

Driver told FOX Sports Wisconsin that he would play this season if the Packers were to ask him.

“If the Packers called me and said, ‘Drive, come back to training camp,’ I’d be back for training camp,” he said. “But until then, I’ll be sitting at home and just watching football.”

Driver added, however, that he’s not desperate to keep playing, and if any of the NFL’s other 31 teams called, he’d turn them down.

“I love the game, but I only love one team,” Driver said. “When you love the game, you’ll play for anybody. Anybody who offers you something, you’re willing to step on the field and play for them. I decided that I love one team. But I do love the game. At the end of the day, if I get that itch, it would only be for the green and gold.”

It’s extremely unlikely that the 38-year-old Driver would get a call from the Packers after a 2012 season in which he caught just eight passes. But if the Packers suffer multiple receiver injuries, there’s a guy who knows the offense who’s willing to play.

  1. He’s a class act, even people who hate the Packers rarely have a bad thing to say about Donald Driver. Here’s a guy who can look in the mirror and say he got the most out of his ability and than some.

  2. Not likely that we will here this class act trying to reduce his child support because he is going in the red by $45k every month. Keep setting the example DD!

  3. As a Vikings fan, I have to say that I have much respect for DD. He was always a class act, and you have to admire a 7th rounder who goes on to have such a solid career. But for my teams sake, please stay retired Mr. Driver!

  4. He will be seen on ESPN soon as an on air personality like many ex players are.the Packers could make him a coach.

  5. no other NFL has players as loyal as Packer players. That’s why Green Bay is on top of their division every year And why Green Bay is always a threat to win it all. There is no other team like the Packers in all of sports. And anybody with anything negative to say about the Packers is jealous with plenty of reason to be.

  6. To provide perspective, the story from jsonline, was about the annual DD softball game for charity. Over 9000 fans turned out.

The statement relative returning to the Pack was the backstory, just Donald responding to a question from a fan.

  7. Donald Driver was a huge reason I became a football fan. Technically sound, sure hand, great routes and a class act his jersey is the only jersey I own that isn’t black and orange.

  8. Oh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Donald Driver is a biiiiiiiiiiiig reason I became a football fan tooooo, I mean before donald Driver, I was like, football, why would I watch football, none of the players are technically sound, they don’t have sure hands, they run terrible routes, and their jerseys,,,,,,,don’t even get me started on their jerseys…yea Donald fricken Driver changed all of that for me, righhhhhhhhhhhtttt, donald “Greatest Reciever Ever”< no seriosly, from a purely technical standpoint is all I am saying, first of his kind really when you think about it! Just the best ever really, sooooooooooooooooo

  9. Greg Jennings.. Charles Woodson.. Nick Collins.. Donald Driver.. Chad Clifton.

No small wonder Green Bay hasn’t built on their 2010 success.

  10. There was an article in Sports Illustrated a few years ago about how Donald Driver grew up living in the back on a uhaul and breaking out back windows on cars to steal them. Very interesting read. Glad to see he had a great career and maximized his abilities.

  11. A true class act in all respects. Too bad there aren’t more players that are as good as he was both on and off the field. A real gentleman and a great player as well.

  12. Drive- go play elsewhere just not in the NFC North. Its obvious you want to play and can still play. Shame that you will retire before you would like to, just because the Packers don’t have a roster spot for ya…

I wonder how many times minnesota has called him?

Still worried about the Vikings huh.

  14. From a fan’s perspective, Donald Driver does everything correct. Thanks for being awesome DD!

LOL. Green Bay is “on top of their division every year”? Lets take a look at the NFC Central/North since its inception in 1967. Division championships of each team:

    Green Bay – 12
    Detroit – 3
    Minnesota – 17
    Chicago – 10
    Tampa – 3

Green Bay has won the division just 26.7% of the time. The truth is that there are loyal players like Driver; but Green Bay is no different than any other team. See Farve, Longwell, Woodson, Jennings, Green, etc that all went on to play elsewhere.

  16. Let’s look at the Super Bowl wins since 1967 for the same 5 teams.

    Green Bay 4
    Lions 0
    Minnesota 0
    Chicago 1
Tampa Bay 1 (After they left the Central/North)

The New Englad Patriots, also in the NFL-
Have won the division 11/12 times, are always a lock to win it.
They are and have been favored heavily as superbowl Favorites every single year since 2006, well beyond the packers.
Packers are good contenders and with 1 ring in the last decade, nobody questions their strength in the NFC.
The Patriots are FAVORED to win every January and are the team everyone hopes to avoid. With the best record in the nfl since 2007, the team that every player would like to be a part of, well see more rings in Foxborough before we see any in Lambou

  18. Cheesebay gone need Driver this season because they dont have a #1 WR on that team. all they really have is roll players. but against the schedule this season NOT even cheesebay can hide the truth
