Ray Rice is ready to lead the Ravens

Rice Reuters

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has told quarterback Joe Flacco that it’s time for him to fill the leadership void created by the retirement of Ray Lewis.

Running back Ray Rice doesn’t need to be told that it’s time to step up.

“A leadership role is something I definitely don’t mind taking upon now, because I was mentored by one of the greatest leaders probably ever to play the game in Ray Lewis,” Rice said Sunday, via Rick Carpinello of USA Today.

“A lot of his leading was by example, and when he spoke, everybody listened because they had that respect for him,” Rice said of Lewis.  “So I think being a leader comes with how much respect people have for you.  These guys look at the way I work and they understand that my actions are going to show on the field.”

There’s plenty of room for both Flacco and Rice to both lead the team.  As long as they’re on the same page about the direction in which the locker room is going.

Based on how they’ve performed since entering the league together in 2008, it’s safe to say they are.

But I thought the Ravens wanted Flacco to be a leader? Its funny how teams ask you to be a leader when real leaders don’t wait to be asked.

    I smell a $121M contract coming.

Rice will eventually do what every running back does and want to leave to a team that will give him more touches.

Ravens are making flacco the center of the offense, and even when they run it… Bernard pierce is already stealing carries and usually looks better.

Such is the nature of being a running back in today’s league.

As a Ravens fan, can we please stop with these articles about who is going to lead the Ravens with Lewis gone… Like Suggs said the other day, it’s a veteran team and if something needs to be said somebody will voice it… Lewis is a once in a lifetime player/leader/motivator, not one person is going to take that role…

One thing’s for sure. Flacco and Rice are going to lead the team right through the Steelers’ anemic defense. It’s going to be 9-11-11 all over again, twice.

Even iff Ray is a leader or not, one thing that is for sure is that CrownoftheHelmet said the other day that he’s 40 and out of shape so when I see him troll on this and every other Ravens related story I just smile from ear to ear (Just wait he will) What’s it like being a fat 40 year old troll CrownoftheHelmet? What’s it like knowing you have never brought anything to the table besides spewing hatred? What’s it like knowing many Steelers fans come up here and give actual logic and reasoning behind a comment as apposed to the same song and dance you bring? If anyone wants a good laught…just google “CrownoftheHelmet PFT” (Spoiler Alert- Your just gonna find like 30 troll comments and not one single respectable opinion)

He’s a great player and probably a team leader by default at this point.

Can anyone outside of Baltimore name more than five or six probable 2013 Ravens starters right now?

    Ravens will sweep the steelers

I watch this team very closely, ill let you people in on a little secret. Joe has been leading this team the past 2 years. In the superbowl he was the only one who remained calm and consistently made plays. Ray did the antics. Joe led on the field.

  12. deliveredbysherpa says: Jun 17, 2013 11:10 AM

But how are the Ravens going to get motivated without Ray’s pre-game, during game, and post-game (and always televised) speeches?

Boldin and Jonesmade the plays in the Super Bowl, Boldin and Rice mainly made the plays in the regular season and throughout the playoffs. The Broncos safety lead the Ravens to winning that game. Flacco looked horrid during most of the reg season, including being outplayed by Batch. Flacco may be the QB, may have good playoff run, but Boldin was the main reason he looked good. The Ravens lost many key starters on defense, including the sack leader from last year, lost the mobile wall in Leech, shipped Boldin to SF, and over payed Flacco. Cincy is a young team with lots of cap space to keep the core together for a long time. Steelers had an off year at 8-8(good year for some teams)and will be back in the hunt in a year or 2. Ravens will be lucky to finish in second place in the north with the average at best play they will get out of Flacco.

flacco and rice together equals 5 years 5 playoffs 3 afc title games and a superbowl victory.

  15. scoobies05 says: Jun 17, 2013 12:28 PM

in the small sample size of flacco since cameron left, he went on one one of the truly great runs of all time. ask rivers and brees about the cameron effect. and if you truly think its all because of boldin then you obviously dont watch the games. flacco was able to put the ball in tight spots where boldin could make plays because boldin simply cant create seperation. as far as the denver play, the ravens offense ran over 200 plays in the playoffs….that was just one, albeit a big one. as far as the turnover of players, since when is it bad to go younger stronger faster. the afcn will be tight as always, and when the dust settles look for the ravens to be on top for the third straight year. go ravens

  16. baltimoresnativeson says: Jun 17, 2013 12:33 PM

Boldin is a number 2 receiver at this point in his career, Jacoby is a 3. And they are the reason the Ravens won the Superbowl, and why Joe looked good?

jmblosser82…… you have no idea what you are talking about.

Maybe if Joe had a Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, or someone like that I could buy the WR making the QB look better argument. But no my friends, Joe made the plays with that ridiculous arm he has. And the receivers helped.

Why would teams only give up a 6th rounder for Boldin? Why did the Texans let Jacoby walk? Think before you type.

  17. Joemontanaflacco says: Jun 17, 2013 3:08 PM

It’s really embarassing to read all these jealous fans’ fake worries about Joe Flacco moving on without Anquon Boldin. “Flacco looked horrid” in the regular season? Oh really? You need to rewind the games the Ravens lost and check out the big leads he put up which the defense failed to hold, including the “Batch Bowl.” Aside from Houston and Denver (reg. season), Flacco got the job done, so don’t worry about him. Why do you think the Ravens are spending so much energy on defense and haven’t given the slightest thought to finding another WR? Unlike other teams, Ravens are learning from the mistakes made after their first SB victory.

  18. jmblosser82 says: Jun 17, 2013 3:23 PM

Fact, Flacco had historic playoff run, fact 3 AFC championship in 5 years, fact they lost 2, fact Flacco had nice passes, fact steeler defense dominated Flacco, Batch outplayed Flacco, Boldin made catches that Flacco just tossed it up, Rice saved the season in SD on the 4th & 29 screen pass. Flacco was horrid longer then he was historic and the only real improvement you relieved on defense from the departing FAs is Elvis. Steelers lost stone hands Wallace, had a decent draft, Cincy only added to their talent and the browns could have a surprise season. So a team you barely swept got better, the team you managed a split with(against back up QBs)got a little better(a little older), and the other team you split with got more experienced and all the while you list your leaders, lost you sack leader, and the front office had to speak up to let Flacco know he needs to be the new leader. 3 years Flacco fizzles out. The defense carried the team the first 4 years he was there. Ravens are second tier in the north, you want to brag about your 3 championship games and 1 Super Bowl win, then the steelers beat you again, they win 3 championship games and 2 super bowls in 6 years. 3 times as many AFC titles and twice as many rings still wins out.

Haters have been doubting Joe since day 1. He’s made you all fools. All the way to 9 playoff wins, in 5 years, and a SB MVP. Oh, and all the way to the bank!

  20. jacktheraven says: Jun 17, 2013 3:47 PM

Please, please, please. Make Joe play terrible and The Ravens lose, and all the luck they have run out, so all my prayers and wishes come true. Signed jmblosser.

    @humbleminded,

you gotta admit though, some of those 30 made you laugh.

  22. scoobies05 says: Jun 17, 2013 4:30 PM

fact…steelers did split with the ravens meaning ravens one won and the ravens d dominated pitt twice. fact…flacco improved exponentially once cam left and caldwell took over. if you think flacco did anything but put the ball where only boldin could get it you are wrong. fact…last time the steelers went to the super bowl they lost and havent been close since. they are not impro ving. fact. ravens had a very good draft as well. and fact…yes the steelers have more rings…they have an 80 year history including 40 years of ineptitude

  23. Joemontanaflacco says: Jun 17, 2013 6:27 PM

Fact. I’d rather read 100 crownofthehelmet snarks than another incoherent ramble from jmblosser.

  24. crownofthehelmet says: Jun 17, 2013 9:49 PM

At least we agree on something jmf.

Snark #1: the next time Flacco checks down on 4th down, Rice should just lateral the ball back to him. See how he likes it.

  25. jacktheraven says: Jun 19, 2013 9:19 AM

In response to the 4th & 29. You’d check it to Rice too crownofthehelmet. Why? Because he was open and all of the defenders were 50 yds. downfield. Why? Because they knew Joe could throw the ball 75 yds in the air.
