Add “noted potter” to Chris Cooley’s resume

Chris Cooley AP

Veteran tight end Chris Cooley said earlier this offseason he’d like to play again next year, but only for the Redskins.

The good news is that he has something to fall back on if the football career isn’t extended.

According to Fritz Hahn of the Washington Post, Cooley is also something or an artist/historian, as he made a collection of ceramic mugs, flasks and pitchers for a new Teddy Roosevelt-themed restaurant. He is referred to in the story as a “noted potter,” which is something we’re guessing few NFL players can brag about.

We’ve long admired Cooley for his honesty and attitude. The fact he tried to negotiate a case of beer into his contract last year cemented that opinion.

But the fact he’s an accomplished ceramicist adds a level to that admiration, for reasons that can only be explained by late June.

It’s nice to see a player branching out from something beyond basket weaving.

    I thought Redskins used clay.

Cooley was a fan’s player in DC through some bad years. From the cheer leader wife to his artistic abilities to his fun loving attitude, he was one of the first players to really do the online presence thing in DC.

His career on the field may be over but don’t be shocked to see him get into local broadcasting in the near future.

Best bit of radio I ever remember hearing was when Chris Cooley would go on the pre-all sports 106.7 and just drink and hang out at the station, sometimes he would just be there over the course of several shows.

And we at Flying Dog Brewery made sure he got that case of beer he wanted in his contract. Least we could do for a hometown hero

Formerly he was known as a “hairy potter”, but he cut back the fro.

Another noted potter? Demi Moore’s character in the movie, “Ghost.”

Considering Cooley’s previous experience posting a pic of his playbook (and junk) on the internet, I’m thinking that Cooley’s ‘potterering’ might be similar to the scene from the movie involving Patrick Swayze….only instead of Swayze I suppose Fred Davis could be the stand in.

Cooley is cut from the same cloth as John Riggins and Dave Butz. All three are true Redskins.

Andddd he also cheated on that former Redskin cheerleader wife of his.

So what you’re saying then is, that he’s pot-ty trained. What a talented guy.

What could possibly be causing rich, famous guys to cheat on their wives? Obviously, you and I would never, ever, ever even think about doing that. Must be sex addiction. Or alien wizards. One day we’ll get to the bottom of this mystery.

Took you awhile, PFT….Cooley has been doing this pottery stuff for years (and using his ‘talents’ to contribute to charity). Just one more reason why he is such a fan-favorite in DC.

Not sure I get the point to this comment. Everybody in the DC area and most articles on this site about Cooley always make him out to be this great person. He was married once before while in Utah and then comes out here and marries the former cheerleader and cheats on her. Enough with the praising of the almighty Chris Cooley. He’s a pig.

My “fine china” is a set of Cooley made plates, bowls, and mugs.

    I think they’re pretty swell.
