Cromartie can be, but doesn’t want to be, the best corner in the league

AP

Confidence is an important trait for any pro athlete.  That’s why the offseason routinely consists of plenty of boasts regarding performances to come in the next NFL campaign.

For Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, his confidence comes with a six pack of apathy.

Specifically, Cromartie thinks he can be the best cornerback in the NFL.  But he doesn’t really want to be.

“Can I be?  Yes.  Do I care to be? No,” Cromartie recently told Brian Costello of the New York Post.  “If we’re winning and I’m doing the things I need to do, then that’s what it’s really all about.”

It’s a bizarrely mature comment from Cromartie that could get lost in the headline.  He’s basically saying that he’s more interested in team accomplishments than individual accolades.

That’s really the way it should be.  While personal achievements can lead to big contracts and, eventually, a bronze bust in Canton, the focus never should be racking up stats or praise.  It should be doing your job and hoping that everyone else does the same.

  1. My initial reaction was that he sounded more lazy than mature. But he has matured quite a bit in recent years it would seem.

  2. Despite everything going on with the Jets in the last few years, Cro seems to have grown up a lot since having 10 kids to 8 different mothers or whatever it was. It’s nice to see.

  3. Well, he’s already demonstrated he’s probably the dumbest DB in the league; why bother with being the best.

  4. We’ll wait & see if he has the same approach to when his contract is up & he looks for a new one. I wonder if in the vocabulary spin you’ll hear he is one of the elite corners in the league looking for a huge contract.

I applaud his “team first” attitude if it’s genuine, but that only gets you so far.

  5. Give me the $14M a year the top CB gets over whatever Cary Williams made plus his ring.

I have a feeling if given the opportunity 99.9% of people would agree.

  6. Always Been A Fan of His Talents! He Proved Last Year that he can do Revis’ Job. Good Luck To Cromartie I remember him at Florida St before the injury!

    #RamsNation By The Way @TeeCrouch

  7. Yeah me too. I could be the best corner in the NFL if I really wanted to but I’d just rather not.

  8. I get exactly what he’s saying, its just easily misinterpreted. For years the Raiders had the ‘best CB in the league’ in Nnamdi. What did it get them? Absolutely nothing. For a few years, the Jets had the best CB in the league in Revis. What did it get them? Nothing. I don’t believe Revis is as good as everyone thinks. Not that he’s not very good, but they removed him and plugged in Cromartie and … what exactly dropped off? But when Cromartie was opposite Revis, he wasn’t quite at the same level. I think their scheme is helping make their CBs look better than they are.

Now, thats not a bad thing. Results are results, regardless of how they’re acheived.

  9. “It’s a bizarrely mature comment from Cromartie that could get lost in the headline.”

So let’s just make it the headline?

    click, click, click away!

  10. Actually that’s one of the best comments I’ve heard from a player all year. His goals are team oriented. He doesn’t have any control over being regarded as the best CB, but he does have a degree of control over the success of his team. Good Job, Cromartie.

  11. I think he meant he is not concerned with whether he is the best or not the best. Your headline claimed he did not want to be the best. That is quite different than not caring if he is considered the best. If anything, it speaks of his maturity in that personal success is not as important as team success. A guy who wants personal success will intercept a hail mary pass and try to return it. A guy who wants team success will knock the ball down. At the end of the year, we would likely praise the guy with more interceptions as being better, when it could be the guy with fewer Int’s that helped his team more.

  12. Of course he doesn’t want to be the best and get that big contract. That would just be more child support money he’d have to dish out.

He also said “I could be the best father in the world too, but if I give their mothers money and that’s all that matters… anyone can can be a father, I can give them money”

  13. Cromartie played great last season post-Revis injury which included games where he shut down top caliber WRs like Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald….Cro is being mature here with this statement and trying to have a winning attitude…

anybody who takes a shot at his personal life due to this statement by Cro needs to look in the mirror bc im sure there are some skeletons in your closet

  14. “I couldn’t care less if someone said I’m the best corner in the NFL,” Cromartie said. “I really don’t care about that. I’m more focused on, ‘Am I doing the right things and are the young guys doing the right things they need to be doing?’ If we’re all playing as one, our whole secondary is the best. That’s the way I’m looking at it.”

  15. As much as I want to hate on the jets here…this is a sweet message

    Translation:
” I can be Darelle Revis, I don’t wanna be Darelle Revis.” He’s telling his old team mate, I can fill your shoes, I just know how high you raised the bar, and am comfortable where I’m at.

Will the jets EVER shut up?

    ——————————————-

The Jets say the same thing every other team in the NFL says. It’s just that no one cares about the other teams. No one cares about cinci–whatever.. or pitts-whatever..the dregs of our country. People care about NY..and if they can tear down something with an NY on it from their hovel in middle America they will do it.
Do it..Jet fans don’t care we live in the greatest city on earth.. The Jets don’t care they are millionaires.

Haha keep it going its funny to see you little people from youre little places talk bad about the jets for no reason.. Keep hating.

It’s hilarious to me that you think people are jealous of living in NY. I visited NY several times and couldn’t wait to leave EVERY time. Smelly, dirty, busy, dangerous. No thanks. Fun to get drunk and fat while there, but that’s about it.

  18. People care about new york? really?

I love idiotic NY fans that think the world revolves around their ghetto city.

We make jokes about the Jets, because IT’S EASY

I wonder why people in the greatest city on earth all retire somewhere else

  19. He knows he plays for the Jets right? Being the best corner in the league is a lot easier than any accomplishments the Jets will have.

  20. everybody hating on Cro…you hate if he is immature, you hate because he made an immature statement…You can see that the guy is truly wanting to change and be a leader and play and act like a Pro..Everyone…deserves a second chance and if he plays like he did last year in Revis’s absence and shows some growing up and maturity…maybe the hares will stop hating…finally and get a life.

  21. Does he not realize being the best corner in the league would make his team better?…

  22. Cromartie’s cap number is 6.5M. That along with the new found maturity is a win compared to Mevi$ and his 16M contract. Very little drop off last year when they had to move AC to the top spot in the backfield.

  23. it’s the jets MUST be a circus!!

good for you Cro. cuz u were one of the, if not THE best corner last year.

we might surprise some of you people this year, just sayin….

love that “hovels in the middle of america”

  24. dut dut dudda dudda dut dut circus
dut dut dudda dudda dut dut jets

sing along if you know the rest!!

  25. You can makes jokes about the guy and his personal choices in life, by the guy can play corner!

And yes, he’s been beat. Every corner gets beat. And there was a reason he often lined up against the opponents best receiver even when Revis was heathy.

    And they do!

    I agree. Stay at Wal-Mart.

  29. Im amused by the comments on here about the jets bashing. In all seriousness, the jets are a tire fire. The coach never shuts up, they voluntarily brought a circus to NY last year and their QB situation is a hot mess. What on earth is positive about the jets?

  30. “It’s a bizarrely mature comment from Cromartie that could get lost in the headline. ”

And yet you decided to phrase the headline that way. Huh.

  31. So a 29 year old Jets player is finally showing the same level of sports maturity I’d expect of an 7 year old. Sounds about right.

  32. sorry – revis already said he was…come to think of it – so did about 1/2 dozen other corners – man this is so confusing…

  33. I would remind you people that the Jets lost their two most dynamic players,Revis and Holmes to season ending injury early on in the year. The Jets starting TE and other WR also lost considerable time which led to our QB taking a huge step back in his development. With all that …6-10 record hardly a “disaster” . A bad year …it happens. The Jets weren’t a circus at all. The media makes a story of everything a jet says because they know that you mouthbreathers will eat it up and click away on negetive jets news.
” Those heathen NYers like art and music ..let their football team be damned” The “insert boring NFL city fans team name here” said as he chewed on a wheat stalk and spit into a can..

all in good fun of course..:) but if you want to stop reading about the jets…stop getting so much joy in hating on them
