It’s Patriots’ Mt. Rushmore time

Green Bay Packers v New England Patriots Getty Images

The various AFC Mt. Rushmores will get a lot more interesting at 5:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, when we select four Patriots for placement on their hill of immortality.

It’ll happen on NBCSN’s Pro Football Talk.

Pats fans and Pats anti-fans alike will be ready to vote for (or not for) certain specific figures who fueled the team’s run of three Super Bowl wins in four years, especially in light of the Spygate scandal and the associated arguments and/or conspiracy theories it spawned.

But despite the efforts of some to nominate men like Matt Walsh for the honor, the Pats’ still have their titles — if not all of their rings.

And the best part about the Mt. Rushmore honor is that the winners get nothing tangible.  Which gives heads of state one less thing to steal.

    Fairly easy:

    1. Brady
    2. Kraft
    3. Belichick
    4. Hannah

    HM: Tippett

Rest of the nominees aren’t all that great.

Wow, the lack of respect for the game as a whole is mind blown. I hate this team passionately, but there is no way any of you are throwing guys like Law and Vinatieri under the bus. Without the defense or the game winning field goal, your dynasty never ever leaves the ground. I’m going to actually have to submit a vote now…

One reason BB has to be on this: there’s only one position player on all his Pats teams who has a shot at the Hall of Fame: TB.
Pats have had solid to very good players (like Bruschi and McGinest), not all time greats at their positions, or even a lot of elite players at their positions (Law & Seymour might be the only ones who qualified and the Pats won their last SB without Law for the last 8+ games, and without Seymour for most of the playoffs). I’d argue right now they have just two: TB and Wilfork. That’s it. Gronk has potential to be, but IMO doesn’t have enough years at that level to call him elite career wise.

My other ones would be Kraft, TB and Hannah.

  18. heisthejuan says: Jun 18, 2013 2:46 PM

Not even a nomination for Gino Cappelletti?

  19. fryeways says: Jun 18, 2013 2:46 PM

Keep it coming with the never-ending Spygate grief. Logical NFL fans know the truth about how that went down, and we’ve all seen the number of playoff wins, AFC titles, NFL records and MVPs the Pats have earned in the years since the tape stopped rolling. There’s no asterisk here — best team of the 2000s.

    Bledsoe should have been nominated.

  30. accipiterq says: Jun 18, 2013 2:57 PM

Gino Cappelletti is widely considered to be one of the most influential and well respected Patriots of all-time. To not have him on this list is an absolute travesty. Your list is pretty much front loaded with modern players. I understand most of their success has come recently, and this site is to appeal to the 20-something crowd, but still. I’m 31 and literally have never missed a Patriots game in my life; Gino was before my time really but I heard stories about him every time a game was on. You’ve got to add him to this poll, come on man.

  31. youhavenoclue says: Jun 18, 2013 2:59 PM

It pains me to not vote for Troy Brown or Bruschi, and Armstrong is an all-time great. But the Pats weren’t the THE PATS before Brady, Bill and Bob, and Hannah was the best player in franchise history before those three got to town.

Ben Coates and Drew Bledsoe should have been nominated.

  47. harrisonhits2 says: Jun 18, 2013 3:22 PM

Logicalvoices you’re so funny with your comments on the Pats when Shanahan has a long history of salary cap cheating.

Try looking up the penalties the Donks received for his cheating in their Super Bowl years. Not to mention the recent games he played in the uncapped year that got the Redskins penalized for cheating.

  52. nyg201 says: Jun 18, 2013 3:25 PM

Whatever was on those tapes had to be more than just practices especially after paying all those hefty fines and loss of a draft pick. I’d bet anything to say they got off easy. They wouldn’t tarnish the pats at that time since they were such a hot team and creating a lot of attention towards the nfl.

“Yes we do, the Patriots cheated, forever diminishing their perceived accomplishments and the asterisk will follow them always, never to be forgotten especially by the HOF voters.”

Meh. Most people don’t care and never did care about “spygate” football people like Jimmy Johnson, Dan Reeves, and Bill Cowher know how commonplace and inconsequential the rule the Patriots broke really was. People that can’t let it go and still talk about it are usually fans like you whose team the Patriots have probably beaten numerous times.

Whether uninformed fans like you like it or not Brady and Belichick will be first ballot hall of famers because they won three Lombardi trophies and set tons of records together during their amazing run that is still occurring.

  63. mpnieland says: Jun 18, 2013 3:46 PM

All due respect to the old Pats greats, but I had to go with the guys that impacted the franchise the most:

    Belichick
    Brady
    Kraft
    Vinateiri

Really tough to nominate a kicker, but without him they don’t have 3 SB rings, and Brady doesn’t even play in the first one because they don’t beat the Raiders in the AFC Championship.

So if you’re looking for the guys who made the Patriots a consistent regular season sell out that is the envy of the league, the list above played the greatest role.

  64. zimaman says: Jun 18, 2013 3:49 PM

I would put the other 3 as BB, TB12 and Kraft

I feel bad about leaving Tip off but if Kraft did not buy the team we would still be looking for our first Super Bowl

Behind Tom Brady the “Hog” John Hannah was a tremendous football player. One of the best ever. a beast of a man. He could road grade two pancake blocks on one play. HE was unreal.

The brainiac readers of PFT should ask themselves one question.

If signal stealing is not still rampant in the NFL today, just as it was when the Patriots violated a new 2006 rule in 2007, then why do coordinators STILL cover their mouths when calling in plays even today?

It’s embarrassing that so many fans of other NFL teams delude themselves and don’t know the rules of the game (which still allow for signal filming from the stands today – though sideline taping was banned in 2006)

To such fans, the violation of a 2006 rule nullifies Super Bowl victories 5 years before – regardless of whether that makes any logical sense.

These little excursions make you realize how deep the legacy runs with some of these teams. Trying to get 6-8 legitimate nominees to 4.
    - Pats
    - Packers
    - 49ers
    - Bears

And how overrated a few others are, 3 legit nominees and a throw in.
    - Cowboys
    - Eagles
    - Redskins
    - Bucs
    ———————————-
What a crock. The Redskins have 20+ Hall of Famers in their history, 4 of which are their Mt. Rushmore, 1 of which is considered among the greatest NFL players of all time. The Patriots have 6 in their entire history even if you include Curtis Martin and Parcells on their list, which I would not. I have no beef with the Pats, but try educating yourself.

Great to see so many mentioning Gino Cappeletti. Wide receiver and place kicker. All time leading scorer in the AFL, and top ten all time receivers in the AFL. Plus, he’s a member of the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.
Also, can’t forget his quarterback, Babe Parilli.

Curtis Martin is in the NFL Hall of Fame, but that doesn’t mean he should be on the Patriots Mount Rushmore – He was only in New England for three seasons.

Gino Cappelletti, Troy Brown, Tedy Bruschi and a number of others deserve it more.

Ask Richard Dent if John Hannah should be on the list. If you watch the first offensive play of their SuperBowl, you will know his answer. Dent later said he had NEVER been hit that hard in his life.

    Most Tatupu
    Chuck Fairbanks
    Steve Grogan
    Hart Lee Dykes

    I like those Patriots better.

Aaron Hernandez has to be there.

  101. capesquad says: Jun 22, 2013 8:15 AM

    Belichick
    Brady
    Bledsoe
    Hannah

Without Parcells and Bledsoe, there would be no Belichick and Brady. That said this list is TOUGH– no Tippet, Gino, Troy Brown, Viniteri, or Bruschi? No Kraft? Guess it’s a good problem to have.

I’m a Giants’ fan and I’m sick of it. They were 30 secs away from an undefeated season post-Spygate. That tells me that taping practices did nothing for them. In any event, if teams didn’t change their signals the morning of, then that’s their own dumb fault. Move on jealous simpletons.

It’s evident to me that you are not a giants fan. You are just a pats fan trying to make it appear that fans from other teams side with the pats.

There is just to much to your post that reaks of an asterisk removing chowder head,

But then again… you did incorporate the letter “r” into your post…

Hmmmm, curious to say the least!

    Late…

you know how good a franchise is when people find any possible way to complain about them.
