Free agent defensive tackle Richard Seymour said over the weekend that nothing was happening with the Falcons now, and thanked them for their interest.
A simple translation of that might be that there isn’t enough money for him.
As pointed out by D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Falcons will have less than $4 million worth of cap space when they sign their two remaining draft picks.
Of course, they also have the ability to create more than enough cap room to accommodate Seymour by finishing an extension for quarterback Matt Ryan.
That’s something they’re working on anyway, but it’s probably not wise to rush a $100 million deal so you can squeeze a $5 million deal in.
The only risk is if another team suffers an injury on the defensive line, and can offer Seymour enough money now to make him leave his home base in Atlanta. But with most of the league on summer vacation, that risk is largely mitigated for another month.
