Giants’ Steve Weatherford rips ex-Jets assistant Mike Westhoff

Steve Weatherford AP

Giants punter Steve Weatherford is not done ripping his former Jets special teams coordinator, Mike Westhoff.

Weatherford has said in the past that he didn’t like playing for Westhoff, and in an interview with the Star-Ledger, Weatherford answered a question about comparing the Giants and Jets by explaining that Westhoff was the one problem he had when he played for New York’s other team.

It’s been a dream come true,” Weatherford said of playing for the Giants. “I enjoyed playing for Rex Ryan but the special teams coach [Mike Westhoff] was very difficult to get along with both on and off the field. Here, the Giants have treated me great since the moment I walked in here. I show up early and leave late and give everything I have. I think the Giants have an appreciation for that. I absolutely love being here. I’d play for free.”

Weatherford kicked for Westhoff for the Jets for two seasons with the Jets, in 2009 and 2010, and after they parted the two spoke negatively about each other over issues including Weatherford ranking 23rd in punting one year and Weatherford calling his own fake punt and failing to convert on a fourth-and-18. You’d think by now they’d be over whatever differences they had, but you’d be wrong.

He’s been talking about this for years now. Westhoff hasn’t made a peep.

You know why? Because Westhoff is a legendary special teams coach, one of the best around, while Weatherford is your run of the mill punter.

And if he’d play for free why doesn’t he donate his NFL earnings to charity? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

    Dude, he’s a punter and he’s not Tebow so…….why?

  3. hehateme2 says: Jun 19, 2013 7:31 AM

and the wheels on the bus go round and round….

Weatherford is known for his ridiculous work ethic, his drive to be the best, and also having a sense of humor.

Westhoff may be one of the best, but he was dead wrong about Weatherford.

Without Steve, the Giants don’t win their 4th title – he could’ve been MVP.

  5. commonman8 says: Jun 19, 2013 7:42 AM

I didn’t know punters were allowed to talk to coaches……

  6. stopdk12 says: Jun 19, 2013 7:48 AM

    punting is really hard…..

  9. touchdownroddywhite says: Jun 19, 2013 8:06 AM

You have to have balls to think you can call your own fake punt on 4th and 18. Even if it works, somebody is bound to be pissed.

  10. ermur22 says: Jun 19, 2013 8:19 AM

He should never have called that fake punt……Westhoff was livid and obviously still dislikes him for it

  11. siennaLilo says: Jun 19, 2013 8:22 AM

Without Weatherford the Giants don’t win their fourth SB? I love Weatherford, but that is a ridiculous statement! Lol

  12. alexb1234 says: Jun 19, 2013 8:23 AM

    a punter needs a coach?
weatherford shut up the giants wouldve won a super bowl with out you….
maybe if you didnt go for a fake punt on 4th and 20 westoff wouldnt have been so hard on you…

Weatherford, Kluwe, probably some others that I’m not aware of…why of all the position players, that Punters seem to run their Pie Holes more than the rest?

  15. jetslakersfan says: Jun 19, 2013 9:38 AM

Run your own fake punt on 4th and 18 with the Giants and see how much they like you.

  16. rahavort says: Jun 19, 2013 9:55 AM

Yeah, he’d play for free because he’s a punter

  17. peanutele24 says: Jun 19, 2013 10:10 AM

I’m sure of all the coaches that taught him about his craft. Sure that westy was prob the one that taught him the most. Cry us a river you big baby .

Steve Weatherford is THE NICEST football player in the NFL and an incredible role model. Follow his twitter or FaceBook and you will know what I mean. He is constantly doing charity work and visiting people in the hospital. It’s ashame they have to make stories out of nothing because its June and they have nothing to write about. I truly think the Goants wouldn’t have won SB 46 without him. His hold in the NFC Championship game and great punts held the 49ers. Then in the SB he had so many inside the 20s not to mention the 1 yard liner that set up the safety! Seriously, get to know about this guy. Class act and appreciates EVERY SINGLE FAN.

  19. n0hopeleft says: Jun 19, 2013 10:14 AM

Every close Superbowl is about field position… sienaLilo, laughing out loud at you for sounding like a damn fool. Every close game is predicated on the battle of field position…

If you actually loved Weatherford, you would know these facts about Superbowl 46… Weatherford was as valuable as anyone on the field.

    Stir that pot.

I can’t wait to read an article about football.

Kickers are like children. They are best seen, not heard.

  22. jmagoo121 says: Jun 19, 2013 10:26 AM

Everything surrounding the Jets is a joke…
Example: The Jets will pay Tim Tebow more $$ this season to play for the Patriots than New England will… hilarious

Weatherford needs to let this go, but he’s not the 1st person to have problems with Westhoff…

  23. RexCanCoach says: Jun 19, 2013 10:29 AM

Sounds to me that this punter enjoys playing for NYG.

Westoff is a man’s man and damn good at his job for many years he was considered a top 3 special team coach in the NFL.

You don’t get that good without ruffling some feathers or in this case punters…

  24. Patskrieg dot com says: Jun 19, 2013 10:35 AM

Weatherford must not have grasped Westhoff’s patented “crowd the sideline and trip the opposing team’s return gunner and then blame it on the Patriots” technique. I could see how that would create tension between the two.

  25. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Jun 19, 2013 10:49 AM

I was on his side until he said he would play for free. Kind of lost credibility at that point.

  26. kd75 says: Jun 19, 2013 11:07 AM

Weatherford was the 1st half MVP of SB 46. 3 punts inside the five and one led to a safety.

  27. bigdan7885 says: Jun 19, 2013 11:21 AM

“Weatherford kicked for Westhoff for the Jets for two seasons with the Jets”. He then went on to become manager of the Department of Redundancy Department.

  28. allseeingone says: Jun 19, 2013 11:37 AM

Westhoff has been battling cancer of the femur for a long time. He’s had 10 operations and almost died on the table once when the surgeon accidentally cut an artery. Right around the time Weatherford played for the Jets, Westhoff had to retire briefly because one of his grafts cracked and he could not walk. So…this old man was a little grumpy and hard to get along with. You would hope a workout nut like Weatherford would have compassion for an old man who can hardly walk because of cancer! I’m a Giants fan, and I say it’s pretty petty of this punter to still take shots at him. Let it go.

  29. spedman24 says: Jun 19, 2013 11:39 AM

This is so old, he was decent for the Jets…westoff has been a great coach for decades…this kid fits in perfectly w/the NYG….no class whatsoever..

  30. istateyourname says: Jun 19, 2013 11:53 AM

“…why of all the position players, that Punters seem to run their Pie Holes more than the rest?”

My theory is that it is a combination of lazy journalists combined with guys who are thrilled to be considered a football player, the kickers are more than happy to talk to somebody about football when the other guys are harder to get to for the reporters. They’ll go on the radio talk shows, they’re the feature story when training camp starts etc, etc. Just a guess.

  31. albanyjints says: Jun 19, 2013 11:57 AM

In Weatherford’s first year with the Giants Westoff ripped him publicly. It was Westoff who showed no class at the time. Weatherford hasn’t got over that. After a team cuts a player, there’s no reason for an Assistant Coach to go out of his way and publicly degrade a player–but it’s the Jets — classless, incompetent and clueless.

  32. pixelito says: Jun 19, 2013 11:58 AM

Yeah, cause the Jets are so much classier…

Weatherford’s punting during the Giants playoff run was MVP quality, while the Jets watched their former Punter from home.

  33. dbones750 says: Jun 19, 2013 12:04 PM

Weatherford is a godsend for the Giants! Perfect match, could have been SB MVP in my book for putting Brady inside his own 10 every drive.

Weatherford is a classy guy, Westhoff must have really gotten under his skin.

Good one. However, to be fair, whereas the Jets are in 4th and 18 twice a half, the Giants are in 4th and 18 like twice a year.

Not sure what rock you’ve been under, but I’ve heard Westoff comment on it several times. He just doesn’t mention Weatherford by name.

Knocking Westhoff as a special teams coach.
    PRICELESS!

Now Pats camp will be a circus!!

To be asked of other players and staff DAILY:

    When will Gronk be ready?
    What about Tebow?

    WHERE’S AMPAT?
