Greg Jennings “loves” Christian Ponder already

Christian Ponder AP

New Vikings wide receiver Greg Jennings has worked with a couple of pretty good quarterbacks.

And he thinks he’s about to add to that list.

Jennings might have been spoiled catching passes from Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, but he said Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder impressed him as well.

I love him,” Jennings said of Ponder, via Judd Zulgad of 1500ESPN.com. “I love his personality, I love his demeanor on the field. The one thing we talk about, and I’ve shared with him more than anything, is the trust factor because he has everything he needs. The skill set, he has it. It’s just about trusting the other guy.

“Whether that other guy is Kyle [Rudolph], myself, [Jerome Simpson], across the board. It’s just about trusting we’re going to be where he’s knowing that we should be and us trusting that he’s going to have the ball where we know it should be. So, that’s the one thing that kind of takes that split second off of our timing. Other than that, once we develop that trust and that comfort, the sky is the limit. . . .

“But Christian, he’s going to be great. I’m excited. He’s going to shock people.”

To put Ponder in the same sentence as Jennings’ previous suppliers is unfair mostly to Ponder. He has had moments when he’s looked acceptable, but there are no indications he’s ever going to approach a Pro Bowl level, much less an MVP.

And that’s also perfectly fine for the Vikings, who continue to rely on some guy named Adrian Peterson.

Ponder doesn’t have to be great to be effective, but the fact Jennings is willing to vouch for him now is a good sign.

I am beginning to understand why the Packers jettisoned him out of Green Bay, the blows to the head are having effects already.

You can’t put a price on what Jennings brings to this offense. Even if he never catches a pass in purple, the confidence and knowledge he brings to this young WR & QB group is going to make it better. Greg I respected you as a packer (and there is not many I say that about), and absolutely love him as a viking!

You ever start dating a gal and she’s really pretty and fun to be around and she’s starting to really grow on you and then she has you over and cooks you a spread…and it’s terrible. What do you say?

“Oh yeah hon, this is great.”

And all the while you sit there choking down that horrible meal, dreaming of the days of delicious bratwurst and fine cheeses gone by.

Jennings is happy because he’s ‘the guy’ again. No James Jones to quietly out-produce him in the redzone. No Randall Cobb to steal his thunder between the hashmarks.

  6. conormacleod says: Jun 20, 2013 9:55 AM

Of course some of what Jennings said can be attributed to the fact he’s Ponders teammate, but having Jennings now will absolutely make Ponder a better QB. And nobody can deny that.

  7. Norseman says: Jun 20, 2013 9:55 AM

Jennings did his due diligence on Ponder before he signed with the Vikings, to see if he had the skills, etc. to be a good QB. After watching film, etc., he said (as diplomatically as he could) that Ponder’s lack of pass production came more from a lack of open receivers, rather than his ability.

Ponder has gone through his early years without a rookie off-season program, without descent receivers, and basically a run-first offense. None of that is conducive to a prominent passing attack.

Contrast that with Rodgers, who spent his first three years on the bench.

Now Ponder has some experience under his belt, and some descent receivers, he’ll show a lot of improvement- as will the Viking’s passing game.

  8. fluffy19 says: Jun 20, 2013 9:55 AM

Because we all remember how stellar Favre and Rodgers were after their first two years in the league. Ponder could be a bust, but anyone who thinks they know this for sure is kidding themselves. Ponder has the right to improve and if he can’t, at least our back up situation went from an F to a C+, so we’re better at the position overall. In the meantime, Packerbackers had better hope the Vikings don’t figure out the QB position because we won 10 games mostly without one last year and we’re younger, hungrier, and deeper this year. Skol!

Don’t be so effusive with your praise. I think the same things were written about Drew Brees, Joe Flacco, and Matt Ryan after their second year. They would have written them about Aaron Rodgers if anyone even knew he was in the NFL at that time.

  11. jrmbadger says: Jun 20, 2013 10:04 AM

What’s he gonna say? This guy sucks?

Contrary to Jennings’ corporate line, others viewing the minicamps (e.g., ESPN North blogger Kevin Seifert) have said that Ponder has picked up where he left off last year – spotty. Reports are that he has thrown some good balls, but also lots of BAD interceptions.

  13. skolvikings58 says: Jun 20, 2013 10:19 AM

Good to see Jennings is connecting with ponder on more than a football standpoint. The fact they talk and hangout outside of the field will create a trust between the two, which will hopefully turn into trusting each other on the field when gameday comes.

  14. thepunkyqb says: Jun 20, 2013 10:19 AM

Jennings should be able to understand the issue with trust for Ponder. Outside of Percy Harvin (who didn’t care for Ponder), who missed the last half of the season, which Viking WR in 2012 was worth trusting?

Simpson dropped most everything thrown his way until the final week or two of the season. John Carlson was invisible last year. Michael Jenkins didn’t have the speed to separate from DBs. It’s no wonder Ponder isn’t naturally trusting his WRs.

It’s nice to see this news from Jennings, especially after Harvin’s temper tantrums the past two years.

  26. whatjusthapped says: Jun 20, 2013 10:59 AM

I think the millions that the Vikings overpaid him has helped him along with his opinion.

The funny thing about the off season is that anybody can say anything (Reggie Bush thinks the Lions are going to the Superbowl, the Jets think Sanchez gives them the best shot to win now and the Cardinals are happy to have Carson Palmer at QB) but the harsh reality of the regular season will soon set in. And the Vikings have a long history of futility and despite what Jennings might think, Ponder has a long way to go to be an average QB, much less a Superbowl winning one.

  27. tremoluxman says: Jun 20, 2013 11:01 AM

Everybody is an all pro, future hall of famer until the pads go on. Time will tell. Other than staying healthy in college Ponders biggest problem is reading the defenses, bad decisions. Ponder had the MVP of the league all world AP behind him and still stunk it up last year….Oh and by the way one of the easiest schedules in the league last year. This year they are playing a second place in the division schedule, not a fourth place.

Who cares about PERCY HARVIN. Dudes a cancer, drama queen who can’t put a whole season together. We sent him the the IR to send the message that we don’t need your a$$ at all and you’ll be shipped out soon.
People forget that the whole vikings TEAM, and I emphasize that, made a run and got into the playoffs. Now if Ponder plays in that playoff game, PACKERS are nervous, plain and simple. He torched them the week before. those are facts ladies and gentlemen.
Now coming into his 3rd year, he’ll be much better. Watch and see. I think packer fans are just a little nervous because with AP back there, now with Jennings/Simpson/Rudolph and a sprinkle of Patterson, it could be like Playing Russian Roulette putting 8 peeps in the box.
People that say Ponder doesn’t have the arm strenght is just Re-Donk. if he couldn’t make all the throws, he wouldn’t be in the NFL.
Be scared, I’d be, especially with an O-Line that ranks very, very high. Best run blocking O-Line in the NFL hands down, and please take note, they’re ALL COMING BACK for the next 3-4 years!!!

Everybody in the division pretty much plays the same schedule, and last year’s was very difficult. Ponder beat San Francisco and Houston last year with very little help from Peterson. Reading defenses is the easiest thing to improve on with experience, which Ponder is getting and intelligence, which Ponder has in abundance, especially compared to you.

The Packers couldn’t stop Peterson when they were able to put 11 guys in the box, what are they going to do now when the Vikes actually have receivers that can catch and get open?

  40. shlort says: Jun 20, 2013 12:54 PM

Lets see how much Greg Loves him after he plays in a game with Ponder.

Ponder is incredibly inaccurate for an NFL level QB. He is nervous under pressure and faulters when the heat is on. Basically, Ponder is exactly what teams don’t want their QB to be.

The Great QBs (2 of which Greg has played with) are great when the heat is on. They thrive on pressure in game situations. They win.

Ponder is none of that. Who Greg should be impressed with is AP. Without AP, the Vikings are the Jaguars. Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder are like twins. I think Gabbert is a little better than Ponder actually, but that is not saying much.

I am a Packer fan, and I think Greg has outstanding ability. He has had durability issues, but that might be in his past at this point, who knows?

Gregs biggest problem now is that he will have to adjust to balls if he wants to catch them. In Green Bay he had Aaron Rodgers throwing him passes. Rodgers can thread a needle with the ball. Ponder lacks accuracy and poise in the pocket. It will be a lot different in Minnesota for Greg.

Jennings was a great player for GB.. I just can’t see him putting up similiar numbers in Minn.

Viking fans have this infatuation, that GB is losing players and they are spending too much on there star players… First of all, we are gaining players (Younger and Healthier) as we lose them, second we have the most cap room money in the division (16million)… We have 3 key players to sign before 2014. (Raji, shields & Jones). Finley is gone… Probably to Minnesota.. LOL.. He’ll drop lots of passes from Chrissy..
So get over it Viking fans.. GB has more talent and is built more for the future than Minnesota.

    ================================

Actually, it is the report of a former teammate. Percy Harvin ring a bell?

And remember why Antoine Winfield left? Because he didn’t think the Vikings were heading in the right direction to get him a ring…. If you read between the lines of his comments you’d see the large flashing sign that says: “PONDER IS NOT GOING TO GET IT DONE.”

And you can quibble with my wording all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that Ponder has proven to be an inconsistent quarterback. Take a look at last year’s stats – not pretty. Now realize that defenses were stacking the box against Pederson and those stats are UGLY. Ponder should have put up lights-out numbers against that competition.

I just hope Vikings management continues to be as delusional as Vikings fans and keeps Ponder on the field for a long time.

Not that you are worth responding to when you make an ignorant and uninformed comment as you did, but here it is.

Ponder was the problem. He was not throwing the ball to the route and that was why no one was catching balls. You are talking like these guys only see each other on Sundays. Here is a little secret for you.. They practice all week. If the timing is off, it is the QBs fault. The QB is supposed to adjust his play to the recievers, not the other way around. I could see your point if there were a lot of dropped balls, but Ponder underthrows and overthrows his recievers. Ponder is not the answer. If you are putting all your hopes and dreams of a Championship on Ponder, you will be disappointed.

Anyway, seeing as you are from Fargo, I’ll give you a pass on being so stupid. I am thinking that anyone who would live there is probably about as dumb as you are. Hell, you are probably the smartest guy in town, and that aint sayin’ much.
