Charlotte TV station to air Redskins preseason games

Before there were Panthers, the Carolinas were largely Redskins country.

And now for a few nights it August, it will be again.

Charlotte television station WSOC announced it will carry three Redskins preseason games this August.

The station will air Redskins games against the Titans on Aug. 8 and the Bills on Aug. 24 live. They’ll show the Aug. 29 game against the Buccaneers on a one-day tape delay. Panthers preseason games are on another station.

The only conflict with the Panthers preseason schedule is the Aug. 29 game, which explains pushing it back.

Airing another team’s games in an NFL market is uncommon, but makes sense for the local station, because anything football will probably draw better ratings than whatever else they can air in that slot on a summer Saturday night.

WSOC is an ABC affiliate, which means they don’t have access to a regular diet of football. And for Redskins fans there, it represents a rare chance to see their old team without Sunday Ticket.

Good news for all the trailer trash in Charlotte that still cling to the Redskins.

As a Charlotte resident and Fan of a team other than the two it means one thing. More football, which is a good thing.

A little more about this, the Redskins still have a pretty big following in the northern part of the state

The following is not hatred, but a good old fashioned conspiracy theory….

To be in a team’s home city and broadcast another team’s games, whether they are practice games or not, is wrong. It’s hard enough getting local people to root for the local team around here. For the NFL to sign off on this means they think having a team with a divided fan base is just fine.

This is the first I have heard of something like this. Any recent examples of an NFL team’s preseason games being carried in another team’s home market?

UNFORTUNATELY GOD HAS BEEN BUSY WITH OTHER IMPORTANT MATTERS HENCE THE WASHINGTON TEAM HAS NOT WON IN 21 YEARS AND COUNTING.

Most people who post on this site were born after 1990 so they have a hard time understanding the history of the league, well the history of the world for that matter. Before the Falcons, Dolphins, Saints, Panthers, and Jaguars were around the Redskins were the team of the South. The Redskins were one of the first teams to have multiple TV deals in many markets. But hey let these children or as I like to call them “talk-board tough-guys” spew their ignorant opinions/fecal spray. Have at it suckas… Oh yeah, hope you enjoy the games down in Charlotte!

    1. John Boy and Billy aren’t funny at all
    2. George Preston Marshall had to be legally forced to integrate his team many years after the rest of the league had already integrated

hmmmm better watch those if you want to see RGknee play. Cause starting the regular season the asteroid turf in Washington is probably gonna do the poor kid in.

I’m a Titans fan who got on the RG3 bandwagon right before he won the Heisman. I’m also a Charlotte resident and look forward to tuning in to all three games. Rock on!

Doesn’t NFL Network show all the preseason games

  16. boonevol says: Jun 24, 2013 4:22 PM

Until the Panthers arrived, WBT, Charlotte’s 50kw clear channel AM station, carried the Redskin network. Most of NC got the Redskins game at 1:00 as the NFC region game on CBS.

  17. cmm10304 says: Jun 24, 2013 4:25 PM

b3nzoz – Yes George Preston Marshall was forced to integrate his team in 1960! Come on, the times were different and it was only 52 years ago. It should have been done sooner but they were different times. And every radio fan knows there is only 1 show that counts, #HeyNow.

Maybe the North Carolina was redskins country, but here in S.C. it was Falcons country before we got the Panthers.

Hail to the Redskins!!!!!! Like I have been saying it this is Redskins country and will always be Redskins country.!!!!!! Enjoy the games sweet Carolinas.!!!!!! You don’t mess with the best football team. Next is the complete south is on the Radar Screen.!!!! Just like it was back in 1937 and so on. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS.!!!!!!

If the Panther fans were more loyal then the local station wouldn’t be airing those games. What’s wrong isn’t that the station is airing the games, it’s that it is obviously financially feasible for them to do so because of a lack of fan loyalty. Maybe if the QB would grow up, quit pouting, remove the towel from his head, and quit blaming all game losses on everyone but himself, the fans would be more supportive and the local TV station wouldn’t feel justified to air games from another market.

  22. bmoreravens1012013 says: Jun 24, 2013 5:15 PM

They might as well have games viewed there…..the deadskins need as much of a following as they can get. The only team that has fans in other states more than in their own. Hell, they don’t even have their stadium in D.C. That’s why its so hilarious when I read “illogicalvoice” and his quips about them owning Maryland. The Ravens own Maryland but they can have Virginia and Carolina.

Actually, ATLANTA and all of the Southeast was Redskins country before the Falcons arrived in 1967. Which is why when the Redskins play in Atlanta, the stands are half filled with Burgundy and Gold jerseys.

  25. musicman495 says: Jun 24, 2013 6:36 PM

What’s the bet that the Skins games draw higher ratings than the Panthers?

  26. pilot2011 says: Jun 24, 2013 8:26 PM

Panthers beat the snot out of the skins last year.

Just thought I would remind you idiots in the Carolinas that still pull for the Redskins.

    Go Panthers

  27. richa52 says: Jun 24, 2013 9:49 PM

With a Super Bowl winning franchise an hour north and nobody in Maryland paying any attention to them, they might as well try selling their poor football further south. Maybe they can even change their name to the Rednecks.

You are wrong, the Ravens may own Bal timore but the Redskins rule Maryland.

The Redskins will always be North Carolina’s favorite team. This is a step in the right direction. Most of us NC natives who live in the triangle to the coast want the Redskins back on Fox every Sunday.

The Panthers are Charlotte’s team, not North Carolina’s team. Heck, most of the age 30+ Panther fans in Charlotte liked the Redskins at one time. If they say they didn’t, they didn’t watch football, were the typical bandwagon Cowboy fans or just feel threatened.

Anyone who thinks the Skins are the most popular team does not have a clue ! Take 5 min. and do a little research, and you will be enlightened…
Sure, it’s subjective when your talking about which team is ” the best ” but popularity IS more easily determined, and the Redskins aren’t even CLOSE to being the most popular team, lol ! That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in quite a while !!
