Source: Bishop picks Vikings

Desmond Bishop AP

The Lambeau-to-Metrodome pipeline continues to flow.  Primarily from Wisconsin to Minnesota.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, former Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop has agreed to terms with the Vikings.  It’s a one-year deal.

Bishop was cut last week by Green Bay, after suffering a serious hamstring injury during the 2012 season.  He visited the Vikings and Chiefs last week, and he also drew interest from the Jaguars, Giants, and 49ers.

In Minnesota, he’ll compete with Erin Henderson for the starting job in the middle.  It has been flagged as one of the team’s top needs on defense, and the Vikings passed on the opportunity to beef up with position with three first-round picks in the 2013 draft.

Bishop previously said he aspires to be the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.  It could still happen, but not in the way anyone previously had envisioned.

  4. pillowporkers says: Jun 24, 2013 3:04 PM

This is what my gut told me all along. This was his first stop after being cut, the Vikings need depth at linebacker, he’ll have a chance to start, he doesn’t have to move very far, the Vikings have one of the best trainers in the NFL in Eric Sugarman to help his recovery from the hamstring, and last but not least, he’ll get a chance to stick it to the Packers 2x a year whom he seemed to have some hard feelings towards letting him go. This was a no brainer. The Chiefs and Giants stops were simply to try and drive the price up.

The NFC North is shaping up again to be really competitive. The Vikes have made some moves but sadly the QB position will lead them nowhere this year.

Solid LB corps, decent D line shaping up and the addition of Jennings to the WR corps will result in a little more success. I’m calling 8-8 this year because of Ponder. AP can’t do it all himself…2 years in a row.

This GB fan could care less on how many former Packers play for the vikings. The vikings went out and added some MUCH needed talent and discipline to their team. I hope it helps and in turn with strengthen the division with competition.

  21. mattyjimmy says: Jun 24, 2013 3:10 PM

This is a good depth move, but I don’t feel that it is as significant an upgrade as others believe. Even if he is 100%, Erin Henderson wasn’t doing too bad a job. It should be interesting to watch, but I’m far more concerned with the absence of Winfield. As a nickle corner, he was essentially the 3rd linebacker for over half the defensive plays. He is an excellent tackler and was where he was supposed to be in coverage. That is something that will take Robinson and Rhodes a few years to learn.

  25. vikings28 says: Jun 24, 2013 3:14 PM

Boom!! He’ll man down the MLB position for us. We’ll be pretty tough to run on, with Greenway, Bishop and Henderson, along with the front 4. Tough sledding in there. We got some BIG DB’s now, so this is going to make for an interesting year. Down goes RODGERS!!

  26. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Jun 24, 2013 3:15 PM

This is probably a pretty good signing by the Vikings, who needed someone with experience so they wouldn’t be stuck starting a rookie or a career special teams player. I don’t think he’s going to by Defensive Player of the Year, but all we need is for him to start in the base defense. Henderson will probably start at OLB and stay in on passing downs.

  27. dublindemonszfl says: Jun 24, 2013 3:16 PM

Now we have to read the posts for days how Vikes get Packers sloppy seconds…….blah blah blah. Someone try something new over there. Let the season come and speak for itself.

Why not just root for the Packers right now instead of waiting until they’re cut and join the vikings when they’re past their prime or when nobody else wants them? At least you can watch them possibly win a super bowl now instead of never.

You could sign 10 more Packer players and you’ll never beat the Packers and take the crown. As long as you have that turd under center, you have no chance.

Collectively, between Jennings and Bishop they have played 46 out of the last 70 games in GB (my math might be a bit off). Jennings was healthy for zero games last year. Good players, absolutely, but they have both become downright unreliable so far as injuries go.

I’d start the over/under betting on combined games played for Jennings and Bishop at 12. Which would be a pretty safe under considering Bishop may not play a single game this year.

His bigggest shot at getting re-established was with Green bay. He is going to get chewed up and spit out as training camp fodder, enabling the existing LB staff to get better. I can’t blame the Vikings for taking this chance. Every team in the league is balancing cost vs benefit and are making any changes they can to get better.

Ej was pretty decent…but bishop proved himself worthy of pro bowl.

    BUT

Why would the packers dump a guy who was so good? I think that injury isn’t healing well. That can be the only reason. I hope the Vikings focus on him healing the injury so they can get several more years out of him.

“A recent study from the American Journal of Orthopedics paints an uncertain picture for the return of Desmond Bishop from a ruptured hamstring tendon suffered last August.

Bishop, 28, was released by the Green Bay Packers Monday in a move cited for both medical reasons and numbers at the position. The former starting inside linebacker had been unable to participate in any of the Packers offseason workouts, including OTAs and mandatory minicamps, and the Packers also re-signed Brad Jones to a three-year, $11.75 million deal in March.

However, the recent history of ruptured hamstrings (where the tendon is torn off the pelvic bone and must be surgically reattached) in the NFL offers no clear answer on what kind of player Bishop will be now or long-term.

The June 2013 study from the American Journal of Orthopedics looked at 10 confirmed cases of ruptured hamstrings in the NFL from 1990 to 2008.

While nine of the 10 players in the study returned to play the next season, only five of the 10 played more than one game following the injury.

In addition, two of the 10 players returned and had major injuries occur to the same leg. One suffered a torn Achilles tendon and another re-ruptured the same hamstring (the player was a linebacker). On this note, it is worth noting that Bishop has already been dealing with a strain in the same hamstring he injured in August.

In its conclusion, the study found hamstring ruptures to be more rare and severe than typical hamstring injuries, such as a strain of the muscle fibers. It also concluded that the low long-term success percentage was indicative of the injury being a “marker for elite-level physical deterioration.”

This information may make it more clear for why the Packers were so willing to release a former starter in June, and why the team jumped on giving Jones starter’s money during free agency.

Keep in mind, the Packers would be on the hook for all $3.464 million of Bishop’s 2012 base salary if he would have re-injured the hamstring. Instead of risking that financial commitment, the Packers decided to start life with Jones and A.J. Hawk in the middle of their 3-4 defense now instead of later.

Uncertainty is high regarding Bishop’s return from a very severe hamstring injury. The Packers obviously didn’t feel it necessary to roll the dice and risk a re-injury.”

Those are facts, that’s why he isn’t a Packer that’s why the vikes only signed him to a 1 year deal. If he turns out to be the anomaly congrats you got a great linebacker, if he gets hurt again it will just prove that our general manager is smarter then the rest

Well we do, you have 2 star players Aaron Rodgers and Claymaker. Ill give credit where credit is do but beyond those 2 the team is kinda lacking star power.
For example the vikings have many highly regarded players at there positions( including those that people think are on the rise)
    These include

    Adrian Peterson(RB)
    Jerome Felton(FB)
    Kyle Rudolph(TE)
    Matt Kalil(LT)
    John Sullivan(C)
    Phil Loadholt(RT)
    Jared Allen(RE)
    Kevin Williams(DT)
    Chad Greenway(OLB)
    Brian Robison(LE)
    Harrison Smith(FS)
    Greg Jennings(WR)
    Blair Walsh(K)

All of these players are considered at the very least the top 15 of there position

Here we go again. Packer fans living in the past. Its 2013, its a new season. Bishop was a good player, and he will fit greatly with the Vikes. Ponder is gonna be tons better this year. He doesnt have to Tom Brady, just better than last year. The Vikes filled some holes and we still have the REIGNING MVP. Packers have some glaring holes themselves, i think they are still Kaepernicking in SF! I think AP shred their D for like 200/game last year. But its ok, if were not going to get their respect, the Vikes will just pull up their sleeves, and earn it. Any way you wanna spin it, the Vikes got better, and i dont see the Packers really getting any better. You have Rodgers and Mathews, but still a bad defense. Also, like no other team in the league, I love how Packer fans treat any of their former players that leave for a different team. God forbid they dont think of Wisconsin fans when they get offered more money or a better deal. All i know is its gonna be a fight for the North, not a cakewalk

The Vikings have won the NFC North title 18 times, the most of anybody in the NFC North. The packers on the other hand, have only won it 11 times, 7 less than Minnesota. FACT”

As far as what the Pack done prior to 1961, there ain’t a Vikings fan alive that cares.

Now the talk here is comparing these 2 teams of the NFC North/Central division. In the 18/11 this refers Division Championships, You idiot cheeseheads do understand this is division title winners, Superbowls has nothing to do with who has won the division title for their each respecting divisions. That comes much later after it is decided which team is best within their divisions

Simply put, despite never winning a ring, since the Vikings intro in to the NFL in 1961, the Vikes have been the big dogs in the division and the team to reckon with, which also includes the Bears, Lions and at one time the Buccaneers.

unwanted leftovers! Pack fans cried their eyes red over Favre, I am confident Jennings and Bishop will make you all wish you didn’t say unwanted.

FACT! Ex-Packers only get better as a Viking

HAHAHA! Brett Favres best and most impressive season ever came in 1 season with the Vikings.

Bishop is a good signing by the Vikes. He going to be 29 in the prime of his career. If healthy he’s worth the risk. Especially for a team that has a need for a MLB. Hopefully he can get and stay healthy for the long haul.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the Vikes signing Jennings to the big money contract. But he’s a great fit and huge need for the Vikes on many levels. Say what you will Pack fans but he was on the field just as much as Nelson,Jones and Cobb who all have fought the injury bug. Bottom line the Vikes have upgraded many needs where I feel the Pack have lost. Granted the talent the Pack have lost has been older players. History has shown they have been very successful in scouting and growing young talent.
I like the direction the Vikes are going they have a good mix of young and old. NFC North will be a tuff division this year. Whatever team wins this division should be a major factor for a SB title. Cant wait to watch CP84 kid is a highlight reel!

Jennings – great player, great guy and family man, best years behind him. Injury prone. Had 2 NFL MVPs throwing to him. Due for a big contract as a free agent – couldn’t find one. Went for best available offer to be #1 rather than on a rotation by committee in GB where he would be #2 at best. Business. Good decision by Jennings – Good for Vikings.

Desmond Bishop. Also talented player. Even better man and family man as well. Very good two years ago. Bad injury. Brad Jones came back strong and he was rated below Jones and Hawk plus with a ? on recovery and risk.

Good – not great – pick ups by Minnesota. Jennings goes from Favre and Rodgers to Ponder, but has AP.

Bishop will have to compete on a rebuilding defense – as is the Packers. If he is truly healthy it will be a great competition.

Nothing more or less. B moves by MN that could be As or Fs. Gotta play the games. No regrets by the Packers except that they highly respect and like both men and know that there is always a risk of their talent aiding in beating them this season. Will make it more fun to watch.
Unless you are troll that just likes to sit in your underwear in your mother’s basement and rip opposing team fans for no apparent gain other than trollgasms.

You speak of luck and “moments of brilliance.” I guess almost everyone has luck then, except for a few perennial “unlucky” teams.

    Facts are facts.

The Packers are a better franchise than your purple pansies. The packers have been around for 10 decades, and had only two bad ones. The vikings have been around for 5 decades and haven’t had a good one.

That is ineptitude on an epic scale.

    I pity you.

I will agree. Ponder needs some refinement. BUT. We have some of the best here. Not only do we have Bishop now. But we also have Jared Allen. He’s a beast. AND we have AP. Remember packer fans. Peterson returned after what should have been a career ending injury and what did he promptly do on the VERY first game. He shut all of his critics up. Went on to become last years league MVP. He’s probably the best in the game right now. And from what I have read. He has no interest in leaving. I’m predicting 10-6. Only because of Ponder. They WILL make the playoffs. Not sure after that though.

The NFC North only has been around for 11 years so I don’t think you have your facts straight. I used the NFC North to talk about recent times and how the franchises perform now. Also how many championships does your team have? I am pretty sure that is a big goose egg for ya.
    ________

By that measure, we have zero championships and you have one. That’s not such a big difference.

    ———————————-

Actually that is a huge difference. Take in the fact you haven’t been a legitimate for all but one year it makes it look even worse.

Always fun hearing Packer fans whine about another defection of one of their favorite sons. Blame your cheap team for not signing any free agents. Packer fans’ inferiority complex is the laughing stock of the N.F.L. but nonetheless very entertaining for the rest of us. You are all behaving as usual like jilted lovers. So have fun spending 30% of your cap on two players (50% after Raji gets a deal). But keep talking about your dusty trophy collection because their won’t be another one joining them anytime soon.

The Gopher Men’s Basketball team has 3 National Championships. The Badgers have 1.

I added hockey and baseball to be fair to Wisconsin – as the Badgers have actually done better in those sports (but still have to look up at the Gophers)…

More years when the Packers failed to score a TD in the playoffs than years when they did make the playoffs and score a TD.

You need to understand what “moments of brilliance” and “long periods of total ineptitude” mean.

“The packers have been around for 10 decades, and had only two bad ones. The vikings have been around for 5 decades and haven’t had a good one.”

You obviously don’t understand the definition of “good”… The Vikings have never had a bad decade (using your standards of “bad” for the Packers).

The Packers have two 15 year stretches and a 25 year stretch without a TD in the playoffs of a full regulation season. That covers 55 seasons and multiple decades by itself. There also are several shorter stretches where the Packers were a true embarrassment of an NFL franchise.

The Vikings have never gone a decade without scoring a TD in the playoffs.

    Thanks for playing.

  189. tokyosandblaster says: Jun 25, 2013 9:20 AM

    GTO,

Actually, you just have a substandard meaning of “good.” It suits your needs more, I guess.

And I was mistaken. The Packers have had three bad decades out of 10.

A champion’s definition of good is winning a championship. The Packers have won at least one championship in every decade except the 50s, 70s, and 80s.

If you want to stretch and say the 2000′s, ok, as 2010 was the beginning of a new decade.

The point is, you’re welcome for playing.

You haven’t even gotten in the game yet.

    ______________________________

Earlier you agreed that a “bad” decade is when your team doesn’t score a TD in the playoffs.

The Vikings have never been “bad” like Packers.

The opposite of “bad” is “good”. So the Vikings have always been “good”.

If winning the Championship is required to have a good season (your “new” standard), than if must really suck to be “bad” most of the time.

I haven’t even worked up a sweat yet, and you’re barely able to stand up…

  191. truthserum4u says: Jun 25, 2013 11:33 AM

    @ tokyo

Worse than being just “bad”, the Packers went over a quarter century straight of being totally irrelevant on the NFL landscape! Most of their Championships came when there were a handful of teams and some of the best players weren’t even playing the game.

On the other hand, after their initial 3 years as an expansion franchise (where losing comes with the territory) the Vikings have never had more than two losing seasons in a row.

While the team I root for hasn’t won the “big one”, I can take solace that far more often than not, they’ve been competitive, and that’s really all I can ask for.

  192. stevent92 says: Jun 25, 2013 3:07 PM

Bishop is the best, and most consistent Linebacker the Packers have had in years. He doesn’t get the highlight-reel sacks that Matthews does, but he is a much more consistent player in the run and pass game than Matthews.
