Bishop could play inside and/or outside with the Vikings

It has been assumed that linebacker Desmond Bishop will compete with Erin Henderson for the starting job in the middle.

Not so, said Bishop on Tuesday’s PFT Live.

“Oh, they told me that all the positions were interchangeable so, you know, nothing is set in stone.  I feel like I’m versatile, I could play
middle or the two outsides, so you kind of see how that unfolds during training camp,” Bishop said.

Bishop also pointed out that, even though he became a starter in Green Bay with a 3-4 defense, he has plenty of experience in the 4-3.

Doesn’t that all depend whether or not the Vikings new stadium, if and when their reps ever pass a bill on it, has a roof or not?

  2. gtodriver says: Jun 25, 2013 5:59 PM

The stadium was fully approved last year and does have a roof on it.

That fact was well reported on this site and the final design has also been shown on PFT.

  3. thehatefulnerd says: Jun 25, 2013 6:01 PM

I ALWAYS thought they should have tried Dez at OLB. I still don’t know why they didn’t, especially when Nick Barnett was at ILB and they had no one opposite Clay.

Sure, dude’s not strong in coverage but neither was Frank Zombo.

Dez Bishop is an absolute QB destroyer. Hope for his sake that leg holds up, but I’m not sure it will.

  4. NoHomeTeam says: Jun 25, 2013 6:05 PM

I see I’m not the only one who thought of the stadium and the retractable roof it should have had

As a Viking 4life since 1968 it’s interesting that a lot of people have a lot of comments about Desmond Bishop joining the Vikings. What’s interesting is that no one has mentioned that Desmond Bishop has played against the Vikings twice a year for several years. If he didn’t respect the Vikings and felt they would be competitive in their division let alone against the Packers I don’t think he would be desperate enough to join the Vikings to show the Packers they were wrong in letting him go. Being a Florida State and Bobby Bowden fan for 30 years I think Christian Ponder will be a very pleasant and possibly big surprise and Desmond Bishop will not regret his decision.

  6. robinyount19 says: Jun 25, 2013 6:14 PM

He’s not an OLB. As someone who despises the queens, I hope that’s exactly where they use him. Another in the long line of ex-Packers who goes to Minnesota in hopes of sticking it to Green Bay. The last time the queens made it to the big game was 37 seasons ago. Good luck with your revenge.

  7. tokyosanbblaster says: Jun 25, 2013 6:16 PM

There sure are a lot of Desmond Bishop stories lately. I just want Desmond to know that my loft cost more than he’ll make in his lifetime.

Cue inferiority complex laden Packers fans comments please. Yet another player defection! Let’s see how badly they can all act like jilted lovers :) SKOL Vikes!!

  9. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Jun 25, 2013 6:22 PM

No, the positions are not interchangeable. More likely what he means is that he’ll be competing for a spot at either MLB or OLB. The MLB usually calls the defensive signals so he’ll have to pick that up quickly after joining a new team. Henderson is probably better in space so it’s likely he’ll be the OLB. Either way, the Vikings will be using a high draft pick on a linebacker next year.

  10. halfstack17 says: Jun 25, 2013 6:23 PM

I think we would be better off moving bishop to the outside for a few reasons:
1- henderson has bulked up and is probably better fit fighting off the guards and centers on an every down basis
2- I think bishop will be our best blitzing linebacker and would be facing very little double teams with him coming behind jared allen also he wouldbt be taking on all of these huge interior lineman which I would think is more likely to keep him on the field and less likely on the IR

  11. mnomalley says: Jun 25, 2013 6:23 PM

My guess is that Bishop will play outside. Erin has been putting in too much work and has already adapted so much that it wouldn’t make sense. Plus, hes had plenty of practice against Rudolph so I assume he’s getting better. People also forget that Eris is 6’3″ and is a solid tacker. Bishop also gets Singeltary and Pagac as LB coaches so the transition should be smooth.

  12. wsperegoiv says: Jun 25, 2013 6:28 PM

Erin Henderson will play the mike for the vikings next year. He’s put on weight and has impressed from what I’ve read. I think this move was to just give Gerald Hodges a year to play special teams and learn the D as a rookie before being thrust in there.

  13. banlarson says: Jun 25, 2013 6:29 PM

Ya Packer fans he sucks and can’t play. I guess leading your team in tackles while missing 2 games proves he sucks. The guy may have an injury concern, but it’s a win/win for the Vikes. Takes him away from GB and provides some potential depth for MN. We all know MN has the best training staff in the NFL, he’ll be ready to go.

Right, the team that won four Super Bowls has an inferiority complex over the team who hasn’t even been to one since the mid-70′s.

It’s not a defection – he was cut. Released. Let go. NOT WANTED. Get it?

He’ll enjoy the same success as favre, Shortwell, Sharper, and whatever other players Ted Thompson threw in the scrap heat that you thought would put you over the top.

52 seasons, zero championships. You do the math.

  15. chris6523 says: Jun 25, 2013 6:30 PM

Bishop, prior to last year’s injury, would have been capable of playing OLB in a 4-3, no doubt about it. Question is how healthy is he? If he was completely healthy and 100% back to form, I have a hard time believing the Pack would have let him go. Plus he only signed a one year deal, meaning there wasn’t any enthusiasm on anyone’s part about signing him up. Had he been a free agent pre injury, there would have been a ton of interest in this guy.

  16. brobokil says: Jun 25, 2013 6:41 PM

Wow, lol. I like how NO ONE called justintuckrule out for his silly mistake.

Ya see Justin, on the defense they have what are called inside linebackers and outside linebackers.

It was not a reference to whether he will be playing in a dome or out in an open field.

    lol.

    SUPERBOWL!

    “Takes him away fro GB”

You sound off as if the Vikes swooped in and took him from us.

This guy was due to make around $3.5 MIL … Packers CUT him…and now he’s making $1.5 MIL + potential of up to $2 MIL (per some reports)

Can’t both sides potentially be right with this move (like Favre to Vikes – Pack going with Rodgers)? The market says this guy is worth $1.5 MIL this year, a lot less than the $3.5+ MIL he was due… Vikes signing = good … Pack going with the draft and develop approach.

  20. nfl4days says: Jun 25, 2013 7:11 PM

Packers fans are hilarious. Aaron Rodgers could go to the vikings and they would say he sucks. And I seem to remember Favre beating the crap out of the packers and having the best statistical year of his career in Minnesota.

He’s a guy that did well when Barnett was injured several years ago during the Packers SuperBowl run. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy since, and had a devastating hamstring injury all of last year. His injury and the severity of it do not bode well for returning to his previous playing level, but it is still a good move for the Vikings. What do they have to lose? He may end up contributing beneficially….you never know.

  22. ihateyoujeff says: Jun 25, 2013 7:43 PM

I bet the Packers signed an undrafted free agent this offseason that will put up better stats for less money than Bishop.

Overpaying for average players doesn’t win a championship. Depth by drafting well and finding bargains does.

Just look at the last few Super Bowl Champions… all teams that draft well and have a great ability to turn undrafted free agents into superstars.

  25. bobnelsonjr says: Jun 25, 2013 8:14 PM

I think the vikings QB’s and RB’s know and former viking TE’s know what a punishing tackler Bishop was before his injury.

He is good enough to be a starter in the NFL but no longer good enough to be a Green Bay Packer.

The vikings are lucky to get Bishop who is a heck of an upgrade over Henderson.

  27. gsprulz says: Jun 25, 2013 8:55 PM

I just want to know what you Packer fans will do when we beat you in the NFC North? All you’ve done is dismiss and write off Greg Jennings, the rest of our team and now Desmond Bishop. Will any of you be man enough to admit it when the Vikings beat you out, or that Greg Jennings or Bishop has monster years? Do any of you have it in you?

  29. chi01town says: Jun 25, 2013 9:50 PM

Packers fans sound like they are giving up. what ever happened to that ” NEXT MAN UP” thing? the packers have cut.. benched.. and turned they back on a lot of good players over the last 3 seasons. and for one reason or another they are all gone. the schedule this season will expose them right from game #1

The packers are getting weaker. the closer it gets too the start of the season they keep losing good players. and against the schedule this season the packers will be exposed.

  34. bigassbiscuit says: Jun 26, 2013 1:20 AM

You gentlemen who believe Bishop will be an effective blitzing OLB are delusional,at best. He is a decent role playing ILB , I wish the man the best of luck with his career, yet retain the knowledge that he is a scheme LB. Nothing more.

  35. whatjusthapped says: Jun 26, 2013 7:56 AM

You are fooling yourself if you don’t think there are legitimate reasons why Bishop has been an inside linebacker his entire career. He simply never had the speed to cover backs in the flat or tight ends all over the field.

Now the Vikings are free to try him anywhere they want. Its not like making mistakes is anything new to them. 52 years of no Superbowl trophies proves that point.

actually we drafted him last year, moved up in the 4th round I believe to get him. His Draft notes…Good size speed combo, can play inside or out, best fitted for 3-4 inside linebacker, is very good at point of attack and shedding blockers, good in zone and man to man coverage, above average ball skills….his name is Terrell Manning

    Earth to Green Bay…

1930 NFL “Champion” Packers failed to win their last 2 games of the season.

1931 NFL “Champion” Packers failed to win their last game of the season.

So even back in the day when they were just playing the little sisters of the poor – they weren’t winning their last game of the year.

Add that to the fact that in 1930 – the NY Giants won 13 games out of 17 while the Packers only won 10 out of 14. 13 wins is more than 10, isn’t it?

FWIW – The Giants won their last game of the year in 1930.

So how do you feel about your fraudulent claims (and 1930 “Championship”) now?
