Drew Brees: Saints will “re-create our identity” this season

Drew Brees AP

Last year was a mess for the New Orleans Saints, with the bounty scandal costing them their coach and serving as a distraction throughout the season, and a team that had made the playoffs three straight years slipped to 7-9. This year, Saints quarterback Drew Brees says, things will be different.

Brees said on NFL AM that he likes his team’s chances of demonstrating that last year was an aberration.

“We had 100 percent attendance in our offseason through every workout — weight workouts and once we got to our OTAs and our minicamps,” Brees said. “So the commitment level by our team, by everyone, was unprecedented. Everybody’s ready to go. Obviously, last year leaves a bad taste in our mouths, and we can’t wait to get back on the field and get to work and watch our team come together and re-create our identity.”

Brees said the last few offseasons have been harder to concentrate because three years ago they were the defending Super Bowl champions with all the distractions that come along with that, two years ago they were in the midst of a lockout and last year they went through the bounty mess. This year is different.

“It’s all about football and that’s really the way we like it,” Brees said.

If Brees is right, Saints fans will like that.

    Sooooo…..does that mean I shouldnt pick Brees as my top fantasy football selection?

  3. relggigeht says: Jun 28, 2013 10:49 AM

    I like Brees attitude. But, it’s a tall order. Bounty Gate took its toll on the team and organization. Don’t think it’s something that can be corrected in one season. But, you’ve got to start somewhere.

  5. ozymandias121 says: Jun 28, 2013 10:49 AM

    The Saints won’t recreate anything. They will be the same team that scores 35 points a game without running the ball and gives up 38 or 42 points on defense everytime.

    So Brees wants to start a Bounty program on offense, I see you got Mark Ingram involved already by taking out Butler’s knee.

    Some recreation, scumbag team.

    3) DWI
    4) Sexual Assault
    5) Murderer’s
    6) Other

  10. aintasinner says: Jun 28, 2013 10:53 AM

    No one better to lead this team. With Payton back and the players concentrating on football, New Orleans has a better than average chance at getting back to the Super Bowl.

  11. jamaltimore says: Jun 28, 2013 10:55 AM

    Saints just need to make sure they keep the lights on for your home games. Having power outages for 1.5 hours can really disrupt your momentum.

    Their identity is either.

The Saints will win the NFC and the Super Bowl this year for the second time in four years. The Saints will start by beating the Falcons in the Louisiana Mercedes Benz Superdome in week one! It’s gonna be alot of fun being a Saints fan this year! Geaux Saints!

    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    How did bounty gate take its toll beyond last season. They lost Aaron Kromer to a promotion is Chicago. They got Jimmy Graham healthy. They got rid of a D C that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. They brought in Ryan, which fits in the Greg Williams personnel that were there. And they got Payton back to put the fear back in them. They may not win it, but it won’t be bounty gate.
    They have an old and young receiving corp that should strike fear against any team they play. Last year they had 2 receivers to count on. Colston and Moore. Graham play hurt most of season and still put up all pro numbers. Their biggest problem was not bounty gate. It was Steve Spagnola. When an offence puts up 30 points a game and loses 9 times, there lies the problem. I think of Payton had been there, Spags would have been fired mid season..

  33. floratiotime says: Jun 28, 2013 11:16 AM

  35. relggigeht says: Jun 28, 2013 11:23 AM

    Bounty Gate disrupted the Saints in many ways. Including their reputation, team chemistry and team morale. And, their head coach. Anyone that attempts to minimize the damage caused by Bounty Gate is sadly fooling themselves.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    You may want to research the defenses of Rob Ryan over the last several years
  39. olcap says: Jun 28, 2013 11:30 AM
    Yes, they are busily at work, recreating the team identity from one of getting paid to break arms, legs, cause concussions and cart-offs of opponents, to one of just being losers.
  40. droyer85 says: Jun 28, 2013 11:31 AM
    10+ wins this year. They won 7 without their headcoach and the worst defense in the history of the NFL. I don’t think many other teams in the NFL could have pulled that off. I mean lets face it, 14 teams did worse than them last year, and those teams had better defenses and had their head coaches.
    And sorry Atlanta fans, but no team has won the NFC South 2 years in a row, and that’s not gonna change this year. So the question isn’t IF the Falcons will take a step back this year, it’s how big of a step back. The Matt Ryan and Mike Smith led Falcons have 3 wins in 10 meetings with the Saints since their arrival in 2008. Last year was your window, you blew it.
    The Saints split with the Falcons in 2008
    swept them in 2009
    split with them in 2010
    swept them in 2011
    split with them in 2012
    ____ them in 2013
    Look for that trend to continue.
  41. pb420 says: Jun 28, 2013 11:32 AM
    I think it’ll come down to the defensive play. Saints offense is pretty consistent and potent with Drew at the helm. That game vs atl will be a good one to watch. As a Bucs fan I’m biased but I believe the NFCS is gonna have some great divisional games this season!
  42. geodude11 says: Jun 28, 2013 11:32 AM
    It is nice seeing the “outside influences” aligned for convenience and success. Barring injury to key players (No. 9) no doubt this season will be an improvement from last. The pressure is on the defense this year, pick that up to NFL standards and the Payton/Brees/Offense show should be fun to watch.
  43. JC says: Jun 28, 2013 11:36 AM
    Wait, Drew Brees mentioned someone besides himself? Wow.
  44. flmike says: Jun 28, 2013 11:40 AM
    He’s kidding? Right?
    Rob Ryan had twice the talent on the Dallas defense last season and couldn’t get anything done, what makes anyone think he’s going to be able to make an inferior defense like the Saints and make them good. The Saints will score 35 and give up 42, their defense couldn’t stop a well coached troop of girl scouts from scoring.
  45. robf2010 says: Jun 28, 2013 11:45 AM
    In 2009, they had the 25th best defense and that was good for a Super Bowl. In 2011, they had the 24th best defense and that team was probably better than the 2009 team but lost a tough playoff game to the 49ers. The offense will be better next year because Payton is back. How much improvement does anyone think they’ll need on defense to become a SB contender? They don’t need to shut anyone down. A stop here, a turnover there, hold the other team to a field goal …
  46. paulitik74 says: Jun 28, 2013 11:46 AM
  47. silentcount says: Jun 28, 2013 11:46 AM
    Based on the comments of some people, they’re in for a big surprise, or they’re just denying the obvious. Those who’ve been paying close attention know that everything is in place for the Saints to repeat their 2009 season results.
  72. lengai says: Jun 28, 2013 2:32 PM
    I get all of the Nyuk Nyuk jokes and everyone is free to like whomever and whatever they want. However, Brees’ proficiency as a QB can’t be questioned. He’s not kinda-sorta elite…he is as elite as a QB can be.
    Barring catastrophic injury, the Saints offense will produce again at a high level and they don’t need a top defense, just a middle of the road D.
    The Bucs and Panthers are making strides, but they aren’t ready. The Falcons have been on the doorstep twice and thrown it away. Their D won’t be setting any records this year either. So, two division teams with good offenses and so-so defenses will be in the hunt until the end.
    The Falcons may go all the way, but they are starting to look like the Vikings from the 70s, the Bills in the 90s, and the Eagles under McNabb. I don’t bet, but my “money” is on the Saints, Drew Brees, Sean Payton, and, yes, Rob Ryan.
  73. jrokk26 says: Jun 28, 2013 4:37 PM
    Brees, Ryan, and (Cry Baby) Newton will all have a hard time putting up numbers against the Bucs new look “No Fly Zone” D this year!!! WRs will be scared and get ROCKED coming across the middle with Barron and Goldson head hunting. They’ll be no luck on the outside either locked down on Revis Island. And as they look for that third or fourth option… here comes McCoy in your face within seconds. Oh yeah, you can’t run the ball anyway but if you did, the Bucs are returning the #1 rush D too. So Good Luck
    AND if you haven’t noticed the Bucs can throw up 30+ points a game too especially against the aints and Falcons mediocre at best defenses.
    Your days have come and gone, there is a new leader to chase in the NFCS . TAAAAMMPPAA….BAAAAYY….!!!!!!!!
    1st off Tampa your a joke of a team, a joke of a city and a joke of a fan base.(Look at your Blackout stats)
    2nd Carolina I respect your city, team and fan base. But your QB is another story! You will be lucky if you come in 2nd this year. You are the least hated NFC south team. Respected but I don’t think you will take out the Falcons!
    3rd Taints everyone outside of NewOrleans know you are the biggest joke in football. Your QB should stick with making soda commercials with 1 direction or New kids on the block. You show your true colors when you Pee on the other teams field. Enough said!
    4th Falcons. You guys are the Dominate team up and down in that Division. Act like it. Don’t be the Buffalo Bills of the 90s. I mean the 3 other teams in that division are bottom tear teams at best. Do your Rise up thing and win a Super Bowl already. Your only comp is yourselves. Not Seattle Not 49ers and definitely Not the NFC south.
    Goooooo Raiders and Browns and Jacksonville and Dolphins!
And lets not forget that they have the NFC West on their schedule. Mr Stat man will not allow them to balance their attack. You contract has hand cuffed the Saints to be honest. The team, the organization, and most of all Brees will all get what they deserve.. trust me Drew you and you boys will be home for the holidays! I’m just miffed tha Hernandez isn’t a saint! Surely he would be the second “best character guy he knows”! Payton should not be in the Nfl.. Williams took the fall. Yeah he went Rogue. I live in New Orleans and I have 31 fav teams! So if you are still obsessed over the debateable charges, then you are obviously in fear of what this team is capable of…..so in other words take your carping and cram it.
    All this talk about our defense and yet we had a shut out. People shouldnt go with what they heard and actually do some research before letting the crap dribble over their chin onto their keyboard. GeauX Saints. Our D will be better. Period. All we need to be is middle of the pack and well go deep into the playoffs.
    Don’t care! They are and always will be the New Orleans cheaters. Drew Bree’s can go bunk Aaron Hernandez.
    You claim the Bucs can put up 30+ points against the Saints?
    Remember last year when the league’s worst defense shut out the Bucs?
    That was awesome…
    Only 5 defenses were able to shutout their opponents in a game in 2012… the Saints were one of them.
    You could either say that the other teams just weren’t trying to shut their opponents out in any game… or you could say that the Saints defense if far more talented than the stats from last year indicated. Your choice.
    Last year we all heard how Brees was a “coach on the field” and that they would get it done in Payton’s absence. Now it’s “Brees reunited with Payton” and they are going to get it done. Maybe if the game plan wasn’t all about padding Brees’ stats and chasing records, the could concentrate on winning.
    necr0philia-
    Notice you’re a Raiders fan….hmmm
    The last good team you had was over a decade ago and coached by who? AND he left to go where to win a Super Bowl?
    You were humiliated in that Super Bowl by who?
    That’s what I thought, sounds like you’re still hurting over it.
    As for your Browns, Jags, and Fins….Have any of them even been to the playoffs since your Raiders were humiliated in that Super Bowl…. OVER A DECADE AGO!!!!
    Sorry I don’t think your analysis holds any credence…. LOSER!!!
    NFC SOUTH IS OWNED BY SAINTS!
    Bucs fans shouldn’t even say anything. Our horrible defense shut you guys out.
    Falcons fans. We didn’t have Sean Payton and we didn’t have a defense. Have you’ve forgotten, we were the first them to beat you. In fact, everyone in the division beat you at least once this season.
    Panthers fans, you may have gotten us twice, but lets not forget how our defense pounded Cam that last game. He was scared to get up. Now with an okay defense, Cam and Smith are both gonna get what’s coming to them.
    Just because your team wins one super bowl doesn’t make it their “identity”. People have such short memorys…the saints “identity” for the past few decades has been a losing team in a struggling division…oh and btw rob ryan is not the answer… matter of fact he sucks…just sayin
    I’d say that your memory leaves something to be desired. Yes, the Saints struggled badly during their early existence but since Jim Haslett took over in 2000, The Saints have had 4 division championships, a 6 – 4 playoff record (including their Super Bowl 44 win) and an overall record of 113 – 94. Not dynasty material but certainly not bad, especially in the light of not having a coach for one season and having to deal with the after effect of Hurricane Katrina for another. Just sayin’
    Vegasvinnie:
    The saints were the only team to have never won a playoff game for a LONG time. There are countless entries in the record books where teams and players accomplished these records against the Saints.. look into it, I guarantee the Saints are far and away mentioned in records on the wrong end of it. Yes Katrina hit the city, but the players remained in tact. Hardly a devastation like the Marshall program overcame, so I see it more for the city than the team. The one superbowl is soooooo tainted! First the Vikes got screwed…(I live in New Orleans), then the cheating and Payton keeping his job? Really the bounty system was the least of his crimes! Anyway living here the people somehow have this false sense of reality regarding the Saints. They have some entitlement theory that the world is against them and they deserve to win every game because they are the greatest franchise in the history of football. And really do bash every other teams accomplishments. Welfare mentality is the only was to describe it. I think the Nfl gave the Saints and the city a superbowl after Katrina and were the darlings of the league, until the Saints pretty much back stabbed the Nfl with bounty gate! So now the Saints will go back to mediocrity as a penalty. The Saints got every call and turnover the year they won it. Not gonna happen again. Nfl hooked up the giants after 911. But unlike the Saints the didn’t embarrass the Nfl with greed and stupidity.
