Mike Brown: Bengals wary of Hernandez’s character, Gronk’s back

Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski AP

In the first round of the 2010 NFL draft, the Bengals selected tight end Jermaine Gresham. In the second round of that draft, the Patriots drafted tight end Rob Gronkowski. And in the fourth round of that draft, the Patriots drafted tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Obviously, no one could have imagined that Hernandez would become a murder suspect, but Bengals owner Mike Brown told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com that Hernandez’s character was the reason the Bengals didn’t want him.

“That one is no secret. We just stayed away from it,” Brown said about Hernandez. “We didn’t question the playing ability. But we went for Gresham.”

Brown also said the Bengals removed Gronkowski from their draft board “because he had a bad back.” Gronkowski is currently recovering from back surgery.

The Bengals are feeling pretty good about the decision to go with Gresham now.

They are totally happy with Gresham that’s why the drafted eifert in the first round

  2. bennyb82 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:31 PM

This is insane! Of all the teams to pat themselves on the back for not picking 2 questionable players, it is the Bengals!? Even a broken clock is right twice per day…

  3. patsfan13 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:31 PM

I would be willing to bet that if the Patriots hadn’t drafted Hernandez in the fourth round, another team would have shortly after.

  4. invizibleskull says: Jul 1, 2013 7:31 PM

Sad when the Bengals do something right 2 years ago and it becomes news…..

  5. brucealmty says: Jul 1, 2013 7:32 PM

Ravens are very happy with their choice of Ed Dickson & Dennis Pitta in the same draft.
    Character matters.

  6. reeser80 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:34 PM

You know it’s bad when the BENGALS don’t want you because of a Character Concern!

    Whoa.

  7. buccaneerjeremy says: Jul 1, 2013 7:35 PM

That’s “Cheap owner latin” for – Once they get released & I can land them on the cheap. The king of ‘second chances on the cheap!” I bet he wouldn’t have said the same thing if these guys were there say in the 6 or 7th rounds? Maybe he learned his lesson from the past but still, to pat one’s self on the back for not taking a player that is already basically out of the league & the other is hurt right now is easy to do. The league is full of busts (& Brown should know a few since he drafted his share of them.)

  8. briang123 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:35 PM

And we all known that the Bengals won’t even think of drafting players with character concerns.

  9. thesteelers says: Jul 1, 2013 7:37 PM

Apparently Mike Brown took Rex Ryan’s political correctness seminar this summer.

  10. tbd3 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:37 PM

Wasn’t everyone? That’s why Gronk and Hernandez fell to the second and fourth rounds, respectively. I don’t think this is news to many.

  11. camdenyard says: Jul 1, 2013 7:38 PM

A lot of teams will say the same thing. Nothing to see here, move on.

  12. strokinmyego says: Jul 1, 2013 7:38 PM

Rob Gronkowski’s stats since entering the NFL: 187 receptions, 2,663 yards and 39 touchdowns. Keep in Mind Gronk missed six games last year.

Jermaine Gresham’s stats since entering the NFL: 172 receptions, 1,804 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“The Bengals are feeling pretty good about the decision to go with Gresham now.”

    Really?

  13. db105 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:39 PM

Mike Brown and the Bengals must know more about drafting and getting good value on draft picks than the hoodie. Somehow it doesn’t appear that way.

  14. biggs13 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:39 PM

Yep, I remember all those high-character Bengals players. Really great citizens.

  15. turkish124 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:40 PM

Not to take away from Gresham, but Gronk put up better numbers than him and played 5 fewer games. It’s a little early to jump on the “thank god we didn’t draft Gronkowski” train.

  16. bluenose1965 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:40 PM

Those Bengals are drafting geniuses……….. after one guy becomes a murder suspect and the other has back surgery.

  17. ibreathefootball says: Jul 1, 2013 7:41 PM

Pacman Jones is on the Bengals, and this guy is talking about character. Hernandez is a loser, and so is pacman.

  18. jjpt4540 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:41 PM

Not trusting anyone from the Bengals on character of players.

  19. redrobots44 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:41 PM

Yeah good job on that one. Gronkowski has more TDs in 1 season than Greshams career and broke records on the way. Also as a NE resident he appears to sell quite a bit of merchandise which is more of what Mike Brown is interested in than the product on the field.

  20. bengaldynastyinthemaking says: Jul 1, 2013 7:42 PM

The Bengals are taking the division this year….I’m predicting a deep playoff run this year.

  21. hilltopfb says: Jul 1, 2013 7:43 PM

the second guessing continues…by mike brown no less.

  22. flipola says: Jul 1, 2013 7:45 PM

  24. madtolive5 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:45 PM

  25. mvpolamalu says: Jul 1, 2013 7:46 PM

  26. zimaman says: Jul 1, 2013 7:47 PM

Mike Brown are you kidding? you got one short memory dude.

Its easy to predict the winners of Sunday’s game when you are reading the Monday morning paper.

Brown you are one piece of work.

  27. brintfatre says: Jul 1, 2013 7:49 PM

They’re so smart they’ve managed to avoid Superbowls too!

  28. biggestredmiami says: Jul 1, 2013 7:50 PM

All of a sudden the Bengals can judge people’s character?

  29. bostonian13 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:52 PM

Smh, please. Everyone was hating (and relax I said was) on the Pats once they seen that the pats drafted a couple of steals. When healthy, Gronk is arguably the best in the game at his position. Hernandez was shining until you know, his idiocy showed up. Teams are loving this right now, they think this will slow down the Pats, Gronk will be back. Don’t forget that this team went 11-5 without Brady, and almost made it to the Super Bowl if it wasn’t for a costly Rache Caldwell wide open dropped pass. Belichick doesn’t panic. Next man up.

  30. philsphan34 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:53 PM

Yeah like the bengals are really authorities on choosing ‘character’ guys.

If I’m not mistaken, they had no issue signing Vontaze Burfict or Pacman Jones, no issue drafting Ray Maualuga or Chris Henry.

Mike Brown has about as much credibility on this issue as Andre Smith has on eating sensible meal portions

  31. apkyletexas says: Jul 1, 2013 7:53 PM

Turns out Mike Brown is a stinkin’ genius after all.

    Who’da thunk it?

  32. bostonian13 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:53 PM

Not the same season btw. Brady’s injury in 08, and Caldwells drop in the 06 championship game.

  33. henryjones20 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:54 PM

  34. patriotsrwinners says: Jul 1, 2013 7:54 PM

Love how the bengals are such a great franchise on how to evaluate talent and character guys !

  35. hwentworth says: Jul 1, 2013 7:55 PM

And how do they feel about skipping Gronkowski?

  36. micknangold says: Jul 1, 2013 7:55 PM

But not too good. They did just draft another tight end even higher in the first round after all. Better than murder/injury though.

  37. alan226 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:57 PM

That is laughable. The Bungle’s are the poster boys for crappy drafting, lousy management, dysfunctional players and an all around bad franchise.
    See: Chris Henry
    Pacman Jones etc

31 Arrests of Bengals players since 2000….

  38. natigator says: Jul 1, 2013 7:57 PM

This doesn’t sound like the Mike Brown I love to hate. He must be feeling confident in the upcoming season to start talking a little smack….or trying to drum up a little hype for Hard Knocks

  39. gbpbacker84 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:57 PM

If the Bengals turn you down for character issues, you must be doing something really wrong. That’s like me eating a big mac and then saying I don’t want a milkshake because there are too many calories in it.

  40. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Jul 1, 2013 7:57 PM

Probably the best T.E duo i’ve ever seen. Sad that it came to this, would have been pretty cool to see Brady finish his career off with these two there.

  41. johnelwayishorsefaced says: Jul 1, 2013 7:58 PM

Yeah hindsight is 20/20. It’s easy to say these things now considering the way things have turned out with Gronk and Hernandez but really what’s the point? Is Mike Brown trying to make himself look smart?

  42. commonsensedude says: Jul 1, 2013 7:58 PM

Well, it sure seems that the Bengals’ ability to spot character issues in players has served them well over the years.

  43. karlton3 says: Jul 1, 2013 7:59 PM

  45. macker1283 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:01 PM

Gronk puts up better numbers in 6 games than Gresham does in an entire season, so they shouldnt be happy with the decision.

  46. crawfish2011 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:01 PM

Bengals are terrible and Marvin Lewis should be fired. Marvin Lewis is the 2nd longest tenured coach in the NFL. How can you keep your job for 10 seasons without winning a playoff game. That is the definition of accepting mediocrity.

  47. rhodeislandpatriotsfan says: Jul 1, 2013 8:02 PM

With my tongue firmly planted against the inside of my cheek, I will stipulate for the record that the Cincinnati Bengals are better at drafting players than the New England Patriots. Now, how many Super Bowls have the Bengals won?

  48. alan226 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:03 PM

Yep, the Bengals have a great reputation around the league as BRILLIANT talent evaluators. (see Akili Smith) ****sarcasm font****

I’m wary of Mike Browns character…

  50. alan226 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:09 PM

  51. patriots123456 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:09 PM

  52. goldrush36 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:11 PM

  53. savboy11 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:13 PM

Says the guy who drafted chad johnson, tank Johnson, Ray Maualuga, Andre (MAN BOOB) Smith and ran a horid franchise for years. Stop fooling yourself Mike Brown. Your not that smart just lucky.

  54. titansbro says: Jul 1, 2013 8:13 PM

Maybe you’d have won a playoff game with Gronk instead of Gresham, maybe.

  55. hitdog042 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:13 PM

People are ridiculous. Eifert isn’t a Gresham replacement. Learn football. They are starting 2 TE this year. And 2 there’s no evidence yet Gronk will ever play again. And if he does no guarantee he’s crapola without Hernandez. Bengals drafted Eifert to utilize more weapons. Not to replace Gresh. Pick up a newspaper.

  56. marcinhouston says: Jul 1, 2013 8:13 PM

The Saints draft Jimmy Graham in the 3rd round in 2010. Why didn’t the Bengals take him? I guess they figured out the healthy and law abiding part with Gresham but not the ‘good’ part.

Mike Brown and I are great at judging the prospects of people and being classy when we talk about the people we have passed on.

  60. patriots123456 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:21 PM

  64. Karmi says: Jul 1, 2013 8:31 PM

Gronk could retire now and have a better record than Gresham will after 20 years. Oh, and Gresham is so good that they spent a 1rst round pick on TE Eifert this year.

  65. dirtybird28 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:31 PM

The Bengals, a team who at one point in time had 17 arrests in a calender year, that practically hoards troubled athletes, is saying they didn’t draft Aaron “2 guns up” Hernandez due to character isssues?

  69. bigginger1 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:39 PM

  73. thebigtebowski says: Jul 1, 2013 8:45 PM

    ————————–

LOL, of all teams to herald based upon “character matters” a Ravens fan?! Because they’ve NEVER had a player with star talent connected to a murder, and they’ve NEVER drafted a player with questionable moral character? Oh, yeah, many of them have retired or moved on.

  80. lanman11 says: Jul 1, 2013 8:58 PM

With the absence of any real offensive receiving threats at this point, Josh McDaniels needs to take a page out of the Charlie Weiss playbook so Brady can revert to the Brady of old (hard to believe I can say that). By that I mean the offense that had zero offensive play calling tendencies, and no name has been never wuzzes could become all star receivers. Any player on the field could be getting the ball and there was nobody to key on. It was small ball, but young Brady was deadly effective at it and controlled most games with it. Trying to go large with the caliber and experience level of the weapons they have is likely to result in turnovers that might make a young maturing defense struggle more then they have to. Back in the day, a punt was not a negative play. Today, the expectation level for that offense is so high, not scoring on every drive is seen as a failure of some sort. A return to the humble origins of the Charlie Weiss playbook, running the ball, controlling the clock, conservative decision making with the occasional trick play, playing great defense and special teams, and allowing Brady to play “Death By 10,000 Cuts” with the opposing defense may be in order.

  81. gregmorris78 says: Jul 1, 2013 9:00 PM

  83. jvw1982 says: Jul 1, 2013 9:03 PM

For all of you who are comparing Gronks and Gresham numbers dont forget Gronk has the best QB to ever play the game throwing him the ball while Gresham has a avg joe throwing him the ball…….but Gronks numbers are sick for a TE, If they can get two more good yrs from him taking him in the 2nd round would be good value.

  84. bigbluenationdb says: Jul 1, 2013 9:05 PM

I am not going to take anything away from Gronk, he has been a beast but I don’t think Gresham is that much less of a TE. Gronk has a first ballot hall of famer throwing him the rock. Greshman has had Dalton who has started at total of 32 games.

Put Gresham on the Pats and I am sure his numbers would equal Gronks. Gresham also plays on a team that likes to run the ball and has one of the best young WRs in the game.

  85. bengalguy says: Jul 1, 2013 9:05 PM

Hey Uninformed Haters! Gresham has 2 Pro-Bowls in 3 seasons. I’m pretty sure Cincinnati has got a grasp on drafting. Gresham was the correct pick, Gronks career will be cut short because of all of his injuries & Hernandez, well lets just say that was an easy pass. The guy has BLOODS written across his fingers, and it’s not because he bleeds alot!

Don’t care about either of them but one thing to note is that Gronk did have Brady throwing to him. I think it matters. With Gronk’s health in question, it might skew in favor of Gresham but that remains to be seen.

  87. offthelows says: Jul 1, 2013 9:08 PM

  91. coachbeck says: Jul 1, 2013 9:28 PM

For all those ripping Gresham. 2 time pro bowler. Bengals have him in line blocking quite a bit. Eifert was drafted because he was the best receiver avail. Gio is the real difference maker anyway for them.

As for mile brown. Yeah he has sucked in the past. But since 2009 they have drafted well, managed their cap well. Several personnel experts have the bengals as the most talented roster. Deepest and youngest.

All character guys. No more chads, tj, etc. about every personnel move they Haacke made has turned to gold. 1st an 2nd for CP, 5th for Chad. Etc.

Stop living in 2005 this is a new bengals. And new mike brown. You will all see on hard knocks.

The Bengals have very high expectations this year. And this is the time of year when every team in the NFL is full of optimism. It’s been 22 years since they won a playoff game, so it is long overdue for them. Maybe this will be the year, but so far it is only talk. They do share a division with the Steelers and Ravens, and they will have to prove on the field that they deserve to be crowned champions of the AFC North. Talking about the Patriots problems won’t help the Bengals win any games.

  97. fryeways says: Jul 1, 2013 9:49 PM

Gronk has already played in a Super Bowl and two AFC Championships while the Bengals got rolled by the Texans in two consecutive Wild Card rounds, but sure, Gresham, who missed his final year of college with a knee injury, was the better pick.

  98. nutsacker says: Jul 1, 2013 9:52 PM

Gronk just wants to drink a couple brews and chillax with his brahs. So do him a solid and stop harshing his buzz brah. Bad back? Mangled elbow? Shredded clavicle? Who wouldn’t want him as a future building block brah? Plus, his IQ of 56 makes him eligible for all kind of goodies from the state brah!!!!

  99. ohiobears says: Jul 1, 2013 9:58 PM

Let’s be real for a second here…The Bungles have done a pretty damn solid job at drafting since ’10 if you ask me. Gresham, Dunlap, Atkins in ’10, As Gresham and Atkins were both pro bowlers in ’12. ’11 draft included a few names you might know in AJ Green, Andy Dalton. Jury is still out on some good names in ’12 with Kirkpatrick, Zeitler, Still, Sanu, and a physical specimen in Orson Charles in round 4….George Iloka in round 6 I like and can see him as an impact player in a few years. These aren’t the top 3 draft pick Bengals anymore, lets be honest here I think they’ve done a pretty solid job. I mean they can have all the Bears’ seconds they want in Tank Johnson and Benson, and who knows what’s to come..

  100. trapshoot says: Jul 1, 2013 10:10 PM

A bad back certainly is not as problematic as a bad character.

  101. aldog83 says: Jul 1, 2013 10:11 PM

  102. buffalomook says: Jul 1, 2013 10:17 PM

Really, they didn’t want Gronk because of his back? And they think that was sound logic in retrospect? Gronk has missed 5 games in 3 years and has scored 38 TDs from the tight end position during that same time. Gronk has 7 total fewer targets in 3 years than Gresham, yet 800 more yards and 23 more TDs. How could anyone think they got the better player. As a Bills fan I’ve seen what Gronk can do 6 times against Buffalo, and I’ve never seen another TE dominate more at every level of the field. Mike Brown is insane if he thinks he drafted the better TE that year.

Oh just a pro-bowl TE that’s all. Watch the NFL much?

Actually there is a huge difference in the way the Bengals used to draft and how they draft now. It seemed to change when Marvin threatened to leave. Many believe he gained more juice in drafting and personnel decisions. The last few years I don’t think anyone has rivaled their success in the draft and with FAs. It’s a shame Mike Brown wants to stick his fat head out there and act like he is the genius behind it but oh well… I’ll take it over the way it used to be.

Say what you will about the poor Bengals, but the numbers don’t lie. They’ve actually drafted quite well over the last few years, and their roster is loaded with talent. Hindsight is always 20/20, but if you read the article Brown confides that taking chances caught up to them.

    From the article…

“According to a UT-San Diego website database that tracks player arrests, eight different Bengals were charged on 10 different occasions with assorted crimes and infractions since the 2010 NFL draft. Only one of those players was a member of the Bengals’ past four draft classes. Cincinnati cut safety Robert Sands, a 2011 fifth-round choice, following his arrest last January on a domestic violence charge.

In comparison, 10 Bengals players accounted for 17 arrests in a 17-month span between December 2005 and June 2007. Eight of the 10 players involved were Cincinnati draft picks.”

  107. mikebrownistheworstownerinprosports says: Jul 1, 2013 10:31 PM

Out of all the players the Bengals have drafted over the last 4 years, only 1 has been arrested (Robert Sands), and he was released afterwards. Get with the times, haters. It’s not 2006 anymore. The Bengals have been drafting humble stars like Geno Atkins, AJ Green, Tyler Eifert, Giovani Bernard, etc.

  108. doggeatdogg says: Jul 1, 2013 10:35 PM

Is the current CBA set in stone? It’s time the NFL becomes more proactive and improve the brand before it goes down the toilet. Players need to act like employees of the NFL for all 12 months of the year with their pay spread out over 12 months as well. I don’t care if they plant trees do macrame, or study film. Furthermore, they need to stipulate in the contract that involvement in gangs and other nefarious activities will result in permanent termination of all NFL affiliation. That means no other team picks you up. The Canadian League should follow to make sure these guy know they don’t get second chances in Canada. They should hire armed security if they feel they need it but may not pack themselves unless they have appropriate licensing and mandatory training like the rest of us mortals.

Pats and bengals are no different when it comes to character.

They both take turds all the time.

Everyone just credits the pats for buying low cuz they win, and kills the bengals cuz they dont.

No one would have taken hernandez in round 1; his character WAS a big concern for every team, even the pats. That the bengals took gresham made taking hernandez a moot point for them.

And as for gronkowski, the bengals decision was clearly well reasoned. Maybe thats rare for the bungals, but you cant kill them on this one.

  114. bensstinkyfingers says: Jul 1, 2013 11:32 PM

Yes you may have lucked out on picking the right tight end in that draft Mr. Brown, however your team will not make it past the Patriots in the playoffs, so moot point.

  115. edelmanfanclub says: Jul 1, 2013 11:49 PM

Gronkowski and Hernandez going into this season were both top 5 TEs in the league. I understand Hernandez as a mistake since he’s going to jail, but how can you (with a straight face) say drafting Gresham over Gronk was a good idea?

  116. rushmatic says: Jul 1, 2013 11:56 PM

Jermaine Gresham’s stats since entering the NFL: 172 receptions, 1,804 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“The Bengals are feeling pretty good about the decision to go with Gresham now.”

    Really?

Not trying to put down Dalton (who’s growing really well) … But put Gresham with Brady & Emochick & I can guarantee Gresham would’ve put up equal, if not better, numbers …

Pats are done, they will be lucky to go 9-7 & they will never score 50 points in a game in 2013 NFL season. They have know one to throw the ball to, Gonk will never be the same, one big hit to the back and he’s done. He will play scared. Gonk will still get his 50 touches and maybe 5td at the most if he come’s back and doesn’t miss the first 4 game’s. As for who’s a better Tightend, remember the Pats are a tightend passing team the Bengals are a running 1st team. If the Bengals played the Pats this year my money would be on the Bengals, their Def/ is for real and have the best front line in the NFL.

    1. Failing to score 50 points in a season is not a very good indicator. There were a total of four 50 point games over the last two seasons, two of which were put up by the Pats.

    2. The Bengals have never in their history scored 50 points.

And for all you saying if Gresham was so good why did they draft Eifert? The same reason the Pats Drafted Hernandez after they Drafted Gronk. More Weapons.
