Raiders agree to pay JaMarcus Russell $3 million

Getty Images

After the Raiders cut JaMarcus Russell in 2010, both parties filed grievances seeking money from the other side for failing to fully honor Russell’s six-year, $68 million contract. It appears that Russell is about to come out ahead in that dispute.

Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Raiders have agreed to pay Russell close to $3 million in a settlement of the dispute.

Russell’s viewpoint was that the Raiders hadn’t paid all of the fully guaranteed money on his deal. The Raiders argued that not only had they paid everything they owed, but Russell should have been required to pay back more than $9 million in salary advances. The settlement suggests that the Raiders weren’t as confident in their side of the argument as Russell was in his.

After the Raiders took Russell with the first overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, Russell held out until after the first week of the regular season before finally getting the Raiders to agree to all the guarantees he and his agent were seeking. Russell was a disaster as the Raiders’ quarterback, and that contract is still costing the Raiders, more than three years after they cut Russell.

Damn Russell can now afford to miss another year of Football!!!

  2. anygivenwednesday13 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:10 PM

This guy … even in his current desperation … has balls bigger than the ones he used to repeatedly throw into the dirt. He’s done nothing in his life that earned him 3 Clintons. And he wanted teams to give him a shot at making a roster?

  3. ketch20too says: Jul 2, 2013 9:11 PM

And the lawyer will get 2 of the 3 mil.

  4. charliereno says: Jul 2, 2013 9:12 PM

The bum gets paid… some more. Only in Oakland.

  5. buccaneerjeremy says: Jul 2, 2013 9:13 PM

Granted it’s a contract but it’s a sad thing that a worker (athlete) can get this kind of money for being nothing more than an immature, self centered, & lazy worker getting it for no other reason than having to pay for a rookie scale that was out of whack.

How long will 3 million last him?

  6. steelcurtainn says: Jul 2, 2013 9:13 PM

Must be nice to get paid for doing nothing. Any one on the streets could see this guy would not make it in the NFL. Apparently the raiders front office couldn’t.

  7. hartdaddy says: Jul 2, 2013 9:13 PM

How does this guy keep shaking money from the Raiders?

  8. thebigtim2012 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:14 PM

Not to mention the cost in lack of respect they will carry on and on. Now where did I leave that overhead projector bulb

  9. scottieplongballs says: Jul 2, 2013 9:14 PM

    Way to go Al!

  10. nyoazz says: Jul 2, 2013 9:14 PM

I am tired of this punk. The Raiders need to start sitting down with these bootches before drafting them (Russell, McLain). Maybe then they will realize that they are just country losers who once they sign that contract are now content and believe they have arrived. Hoefully 9 million is enough to keep him away from the NFL. We apologize NFL for making this moron entitled, even more so than he already was.

  11. moneymike23 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:16 PM

Am I the only one who thought the Raiders actually re-signed him?

  12. radioactivechimp says: Jul 2, 2013 9:17 PM

Now that he has a little money, he probably won’t be so desperate for a team to sign him. His only motivation to play was money, and now he’s got some.
Maybe in another five years when he’s blown through his 3 million, he’ll try another comeback.

  13. timegambit says: Jul 2, 2013 9:18 PM

And the comeback takes a back-burner while JR fills his SUV with chips, krispy kreme’s and some sort of purple liquid.

An emergency call to a storage unit to return his “hefty” clothes ASAP.

    To be continued…..

  14. silverandblack052099 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:19 PM

Just when I started to forgive this guy and actually feel a little sorry for him he reminds me of how much of a selfish me first player he is/was. He has already been paid over 30 million for doing next to nothing and now he’s squeezing another 3 out of the franchise. What’s the matter Jamarcus, are you broke already? Good luck with your failed comeback attempt, loser!

  15. granadafan says: Jul 2, 2013 9:22 PM

The Raiders have gone soft. Skeletor would have litigated this for years and not given up a cent.

  16. tdubdizzle says: Jul 2, 2013 9:22 PM

Well that should be more than enough for him to right his wrongs and live comfortably.

  17. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 2, 2013 9:22 PM

And that $3MM will come at a 2013 cap charge right?

  18. ibreathefootball says: Jul 2, 2013 9:22 PM

Try to make it last this time JaMarcus!

  19. goldrush36 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:23 PM

Welp that should end the comeback attempt. Until he is broke again next offseason

  20. baconispigcandy says: Jul 2, 2013 9:24 PM

Unbelievable that he would have the stones to file a grievance after robbing the Raiders of all those millions for doing absolutely nothing…what a gigantic scumbag.

  29. snowboardinganteater says: Jul 2, 2013 9:31 PM

  30. cedarstrength says: Jul 2, 2013 9:33 PM

Russel must have kept receipts for every big Mac he ever ate.

  31. celticsforever says: Jul 2, 2013 9:33 PM

Thank the football gods that this bum came along. His actions and contract were the driving force behind the rookie wage scale. For every Luck or RG3, there’s a Jamarcus Russell or a Health Shuler. To this day I’m not even sure if Russell even opened the playbook.

  32. jimmysee says: Jul 2, 2013 9:33 PM

He’s the gift from Al Davis that keeps on giving!

  33. fruitcovejag says: Jul 2, 2013 9:35 PM

  34. cuzzinjoey says: Jul 2, 2013 9:39 PM

Unbelievable, doesn’t the bleeding ever end with this guy?

When I first saw the headline, I thought the Raiders had re-signed him. Which also would be bad news.

  35. jwayne111 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:40 PM

Gotta hold agent responsible in part…QB more than any position needs to be in camp. coupled with the Raiders as an organization = disaster.

  36. timbokid says: Jul 2, 2013 9:41 PM

Wow that’s amazing. He should be required to hand wash jockstraps for the next fifty seasons, since he is still on the payroll!

  37. jjackwagon says: Jul 2, 2013 9:42 PM

If they are going to pay him 3 mil. They might as well put him on the roster again for one year. He may not start but he would at least beat out Flynn and Pryor to backup Wilson.

  38. briang123 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:43 PM

Kolb, Fitzpatrick, Palmer are bums that are getting second and third chances. Russell and Vince Young cant get a tryout. Hmmm. Kolb , Fitzpatrick, and Palmer are white, while Russell and Young are black. What could possibly account for the difference in treatment?

  39. Jeremy the Positive says: Jul 2, 2013 9:43 PM

    Must be nice.

    Go away Jamarcus.

  40. ohioraider22 says: Jul 2, 2013 9:44 PM

  66. bennyb82 says: Jul 2, 2013 10:11 PM

Three weeks ago if someone told you Jamarcus would make more money in the NFL this year than Aaron Hernandez…you would have to assume Jamarcus was living in Las Vegas.

  67. whitecastleisafoodgroup says: Jul 2, 2013 10:12 PM

Unless the Raiders had a clause for Russell to not be fat and lazy pay the man. End of story.

The Al D Raiders constantly overpaid for players and bitched about it later. Deal with the bad deals Al did and move on.

  68. 8man says: Jul 2, 2013 10:16 PM

Translation: It would cost more than $3 million to continue the legal battle and then await an unsure outcome.

Russell took them for a bit of a ride, as he probably would have any franchise. Raidernation is sick of the theatrics and has moved on.

  69. bradyhater says: Jul 2, 2013 10:17 PM

They are a novelty act like RG3, Yeah he will do some crazy stuff to score a TD here and there but YOU ARE NOT WINNING A SUPERBOWL WITH A BLACK QB. Every NFL team knows this, they won’t admit it of course but it’s true. Latest example Geno Smith look how far he went down on the draft board

The level of ignorance you display with this post is beyond comprehension. Your blatant uneducated view towards race aside, the reason Vince Young and Jamarcus Russell can’t get a tryout has NOTHING to do with the color of their skin, but rather is due to their work ethic (or lack thereof), collective sense of entitlement, immaturity, and inability to put the in the necessary work to become masters of their chosen craft.

Kolb, Fitz and Palmer at least put in the work and aren’t cancers in the locker room, so teams are more apt to give them an opportunity over a guy who, after being drafted first overall, held out into the regular season because it was all ME ME ME

Whats still so frustrating to me is that Russell did show a lot of potential early on. He wasnt a ‘Dan McGuire’ QB who showed nothing. Hear me out…

Granted his rookie year he started 1 game against the Chargers in the season finale, did well (27a, 21c if i remember right).

Then 2008 he started, as a 23 year old QB on a very weak team he threw 13 td’s and 7 ints. He had some good moments, 18a, 15c against Miami in a close loss. Led the Raiders on a late drive to set up a FG to beat the Jets.

He basically showed a lot of potential, those are very good numbers for a young QB on a poor team. But then the death of his mentor (His uncle) started a huge downward spiral. His uncles funeral was April 2009, then after that he went down and down. The infamous codeine syrup, looking completely out of shape that year, looking terrible when he started the season and the rest is history.

Whats SO frustrating is that he showed he had a lot of talent early on. As a Raiders fan i’ve seen QB’s come and go, on a poor team Russell was looking good early on. Its frustrating when you read reports of Russell in a bad situation at Oakland, it wasnt the Raiders fault. They brought him along slowly, didnt throw him in the deep end and it was working.

That is until his uncle died and it all went downhill.

I actually wish Russell the best for his comeback, if hes focused hes well worth a shot signing the vets minimum with no bonus and to see what he can do in preseason.

Russell wasnt a ‘Ryan Leaf’ as he actually showed something in the pro’s early on.

He basically won the lottery by being born and showing up for a small amount of time.

Now Russell can stock up on Robitussin to fight his allergic reactions to scruples and work.

Well, I’m still waiting for joetoronto to explain to us how this all some how relates to the Bengals.

I was really hoping that the Raiders would announce the agreement at a press conference complete with an overhead projector and some sort of pronouncement about Russell being a “great player”, you know, just for old times sake.

He and Vince Young could pool what remains of their NFL earnings…probably 60-70 million or more…and couldn’t buy a Starbucks Grande Latte. They will be busted for selling crack soon, like so many ballplayers who go broke do…they can’t even find a job at McDonalds, have already hocked the millions in Bling they splurged on, defaulted on their mansion that they can now not even afford to pay the electric bill on…..just another rage to riches to rags story that is repeated year after year in our society.
