Ben Roethlisberger says his knee feels “better than ever”

AP

During this week’s visit to London, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said that he wants to finish his career with more Super Bowl rings than the four won by former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

It won’t be easy for Roethlisberger to win three more Super Bowls and it will be impossible if he isn’t healthy enough to remain on the field. It’s a good thing for him, then, that his offseason knee surgery has left him feeling like he traveled back in time.

“It feels great, it feels better than ever, like it’s a brand new knee and I feel younger than ever, I feel good,” Roethlisberger said during an interview with 7msport.com that was filmed in front of the Big Ben familiar to those who think football is a sport played largely by kicking the ball.

Roethlisberger doesn’t do any kicking, so he won’t have to stress his knee that way, and he’s never been much of a runner. His knee needs to be sound enough for him to maintain his escapability in the pocket and it sounds like he’s confident he’ll be able to do that come the start of the season.

Roethlisberger has only played all 16 games once in his career, so the fountain of youth he feels he’s discovered hardly guarantees that he’ll be in the lineup every week this season. That helps explain why the Steelers actually did go younger at backup quarterback this offseason, acquiring Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones to replace the well-seasoned Charlie Batch/Byron Leftwich tandem.

  1. Sounds like he’s ready for some hard partying. Look out girls … you know what that means. The Pride of Pittsburgh is on the loose.

  2. Still waiting for one of these years I see a pre-season pic of Ben and he doesn’t look overweight. I think an apple every now and then would help more than anything keep him on the field.

That being said, I’d still take him over any other QB to win one game. Most underrated QB of this era.

  3. Glad to hear the knee is better as we don’t want any excuses this year. Now bring on the raven trolls like scoobie s and flaccomontanabersteinoreilly.

  4. Mark this day down or save this link. I guarantee he will use his knee for sympathy 1/3 of the way into the season.

  5. Ben needs to stop using his FlowBee do-it-yourself hair cutting system and start seeing a professional hair stylist.

With the kind of money he’s making, he can afford to get a haircut that doesn’t make him look like he just got off a non-stop Greyhound bus trip from Phoenix to Pittsburgh.

  6. Have no fear, Ben the Drama Queen will develop some imaginary injury during the season as always. And as always the mentally challenged fanbase will buy into it.

Since the Steelers will have a losing season this year, expect Ben to have at least 4-6 different “injuries” that he will “heroically” play through and pin his excuses onto.

  7. “his offense doesnt score any points” – they play for time of possession

“hes a rapist” – never charged, if you look at interviews, and not just read headlines, its clear that he is innocent

“ben sucks” – 9th all time in QB rating, one spot above Joe Montana

    hate on haters

  8. Not trying to be critical because I do think he’s a tough SOB but is it true that he’s only played one complete 16 game season? And he’s entering his tenth season? I wouldn’t say the odds are in his favor for 2013.

  9. Wish the Ravens could trade Joe”Dilfer”Flacco for Roethlisberger. Ravens need a team leader. Hopefully our defense can keep the Steelers under 500 yeards when we play them this season.

  10. People need to grow up yes he might have sexually assaulted women in the past but what has he done that’s illegal in the past 4 years? Nothing! Ben is a changed man he has a wife and child he is a better person and people need to except it.

  11. Not trying to be critical because I do think he’s a tough SOB but is it true that he’s only played one complete 16 game season? And he’s entering his tenth season? I wouldn’t say the odds are in his favor for 2013.

I am sure as an unbiased and objective raven homer you can find something to shoot down Ben and prop up Jump Ball Joe. But hey, going to three Super Bowls doesn’t mean much unless it was done by Baltimore….oh wait they haven’t done that yet …or have they let’s see if they can rewrite the history on that like they do on so many issues….sigh

  12. I’d love to see all of you toolbag get out on the field and play in 16 games and tell me how sore/hurt you’d be after it was done. Ben has made more money than all of you haters combined! But I still see my steelers going 8-8 this year cause Todd Haley’s offense sucks big time!

  13. It’s amusing to watch the frothing haters come out of the woodwork following even the most inane story about Roethlisberger. Ben has been a warrior for
the Steelers. He doesn’t seek your sympathy nor your approval, only the chance to win a couple more rings.

  14. I’m Glad his knee is feeling better, he needs to be healthy in order for the steelers to bring home title number 7. Big Ben is still the best qb in the AFC North.

  15. Ben is one of the toughest QB’s in the league but he just can’t hold on to the ball as long as he used to I know people say that’s his game but he has to adapt his game since he is getting older. As for playing 16 games I think in 2011 the last game of the year Ben had a bad foot injury and he played against Cleveland and he re-injured it, that is the reason why they lost to Denver in the Playoffs.

  16. He’ll be “banged up…but playing through the pain” by week 4. If you want to talk about the actual toughest quarterback you’d have to say Eli Manning. Never complained about being hurt, never missed a game in his career.

  17. After a short debate with the clock, Rothlisberger agreed that it would be known as “Big Ben” and he would become “Little Ben”. After the clock pointed out to him, “you look more like an erect dick”.

  18. The only time Ben can make the headlines now is a result of his injury status. Put a fork in him, he’s done.

  19. Good, no excuses this year (yet). Steelers better hope he doesn’t need one because the backup QB’s are a big dropoff in quality.

  20. “Roethlisberger has only played all 16 games once in his career,”

I say go crazy this year – have Gradkowski play the first 5 games. Then sign Batch to a 1-day contract to start next game against the Ravens, then let a healthy Ben clean up the final 13 games, except start Batch one more time on Thanksgiving.

  21. Rookie season he played only 14, Maddox was the starter till injury. His 4 game suspension season he only missed those 4 games I believe. 1 full 16 game season with no games missed to injury. I also think there was a season or 2 where he was rested at the end of the season before the playoffs.
If the line plays better he should have a full season.
Yea he fakes injuries…remember when he started against the ravens with a broken foot, I think it was Suggs who broke ben’s nose and he missed I think 1 play and put the ravens away. He plays more games injured then he misses, most of his injuries came from bad line blocking…a few from holding on too long.

  22. For every rape comment, Big Ben will throw an extra touchdown pass against your puny defense’s. Oh, how sweet will #7 be!

  23. I dont get why nobody like him? Guy plays his heart off for his team…is all about team first, doesnt talk negative, takes paycuts or renegotiates his contract if needed without crying…i mean really? This rape stuff is so old. I get nobody likes our team. Thats fine. But atleast give him some props once in a while instead trolling everytime an article on him comes out.

Or is it actually, for every touchdown pass, ol’ Rapey McRaperson will visit a local college and get a few more underage girls “too drunk to think”. yeahhhhh….

  25. Exact count, missed 9 games to injury, 4 to suspension, 2 to rest at the end of the season. So average 1 game a season due to injury. Even injured Ben is better then 70% of the QBs in the league. But at most, only 1 more chance for mor bling.

  26. uh oh, band wagon nation is in a tizzy….you know, all those true stillers fans who have never even been to Heinz field and can’t name the Styx song played in the third quarter….

  27. Just because you never been to the stadium makes you a bandwagon fan. I never knew that. I worked stadium security a few seasons back in the early 2ks. I couldn’t tell you what song played. Now living near foxboro, I catch all the steeler games on Sunday ticket…but yea I’m a bandwagon fan.

  28. Or is it actually, for every touchdown pass, ol’ Rapey McRaperson will visit a local college and get a few more underage girls “too drunk to think”. yeahhhhh….

Whatever makes you feel better with the trash talk 🙂 We’re immune to it. The dude turned his life around (that’s what men do, change for the better), has a wife and a child so the the statement remains: For every rape comment, Big Ben will throw an extra touchdown against your puny defense on his way to #7 🙂 Keep ’em coming!

  29. All the Ben raplisberger jokers, I all ask you the same question you ask the ray ray murderer jokers, were you there? Did you hold his unit to help him insert it? Do you have pictures? First “victim” is a sketchy character, and the second was of better character but there was just as much evidence against ray as there is ben. Ray is guilty of obstruction, proven by court, Ben has never been charged.

  30. daburgher:
Your excuse that the Steelers have no interest in scoring points because they play for time of possession is simply RIDICULOUS.
Roethlisberger and his offense are atrocious inside the red zone. Maybe they ought to take a knee once on the 20? Laughable, my friend. Very laughable.
Scoring points is the name of the NFL game. If Roethlisberger is holding back in order to kill the clock, as you have suggested, both he and Tomlin ought to be fired immediately.

i’m going to agree with everything you said with the exception of the most underrated qb of his era, that title belongs my man Joe cool…

  32. How is joe underrated when his stats put him in the rank of 10-15. All you ravenites have tunnel vision, only remember the playoff run, which he only had because of the gross misplay of one if his deep balls.

  33. as a ravens fan i have to agree with steelers fan bobzilla. in todays nfl how can a qb be considered elite when he could only break 23 pts once last season…against oakland(ravens hung 55 on them). as pitt’s qb ben has been to 3 sbs and won 2…cant deny that or take that away from him as another poster claims ravens fans try to do. but this a league geared towards offense. “jumpball joe” as some like to call sb mvp joe flacco broke 30 pts twice in the playoffs against top 5 defenses. ben has accomplished a lot in his career…no question. but moving forward the offense simply must do better to get where you want to be. and if you want to bring batch back for the 2 ravens games…thats just fine with us. he got us once…no excuses. ravens offense was awful that day and he made us pay. dont think it would happen again. happy 4th to all!

  34. Joe Flacco underrated? C’mon now, the dude puts up Mark Sanchez numbers bi-weekly and is as up and done as sir.Tony Romo. For a rookie contract, his pedestrian numbers were acceptable.

For 60 million a year? We’ll see if those lousy bi-weekly numbers without his #1 WR and pieces to a dominant defense lost hold up to the standard of being that much over-priced. Dude was a 70 yard heave away from staying Joe Flaccid. Without his deep ball, Flacco is average at best.

  39. As a Viking fan, I have the utmost respect for Big Ben as a QB, he is sooo underrated it’s sick! He is top 5 material! Plays his heart out and plays through injury! If his team hadn’t aged on him, he would most certainly have another ring! Tomlin is awesome, mad my Vikes let him go! Get off the Rape stuff, clearly he partied when he was younger, and these broads just tried a money grab! Nothing more. He raped NOONE! Get over it! You embarrass yourselves with those comments

Once Steeler fans show the same respect to Flacco and Lewis it will be reciprocated…

  41. so folks…cant accept the arguement that if things didnt happen…because they did. if harrison doesnt get a 100 yd fumble recovery do the steelers beat the cards? moot point because it happened. and lets not forget that flacco had already put up 28 on denver before that play. just because good things happen to teams you dont like, that doesnt mean you can discredit them unless you are willing to do it when it happens to your team

  42. Cmon people. Ben never sexually assaulted anyone. The Vegas nut made up the story about going to his hotel room to fix his television which sounds more like a porn fantasy. The Georgia woman went into the bathroom after he did. I do not know what steelers88 is saying. If he had actually sexually assaulted someone, having a wife and kid does not negate that.

  43. BTW, the 3rd Quarter song is “Renegade” and I have physically seen this ritual win games for the Steelers when they would play it a second time late in the 4th Quarter at a key moment. If you have not experienced it in person, you are missing out on quite an experience.

  44. jmblosser82 says: Jul 3, 2013 12:41 PM

That was what I was looking for, someone to post an assessment of time he’s missed. I was surprised he made one complete season. I didn’t think he was injured eight seasons of nine. I remember that broken nose and pretty sure it was Ngata. It was clearly out of shape. He went right back in. He does play tough, sometimes when he shouldn’t, like the 49ers game when the lights went out two seasons ago.

you see nofool, that was a a way to have a decent conversation with another human, albeit on a message board.

I wouldn’t call bobzilla a steeler fan as much as a Ben hater. He has some very insightful comments but gets very excited when he has a chance to bash Ben and women with strong insightful opinions. Other than that he is a great steeler fan and person…and I’ll take his response off air.

  46. Bandwagon fans? What? How does not knowing what song is played in the 3rd Quarter make you a bandwagon fan? I have been a Steelers fan since I was 8 years old and did not make my first trip to Pittsburgh until I was 30 in Ben’s rookie year. So I guess I was a bandwagon fan for 22 years until I finally experienced “Renegade”.

  47. pretty weak excuse but that only covers 2011, what’s your excuse for 8-8 last year?
    ————————-

There’s pretty much no excuse, dude. The Steelers simply lacked continuity all season on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, the first 6 games were beautiful, leading the leauge in T.O.P and 3rd down efficiency rate and Ben was off to a best-of-his-career-statistic and led his team to a 6-3 record. On defense, injuries amounted. Ryan Clark didn’t play in Denver week 1. Neither did Harrison and Troy got hurt, leaving the game. Once the defense started coming around, Ben got hurt, along with every offensive lineman, running backs and recievers. Continuity killed this team, but they still fought to .500. That’s a good sign.

Don’t discount Pittsburgh in the slightest, haters. They got what it takes to turn it around and turn it around QUICKLY.

  48. Interesting, both lean just slightly to the right.

Actually…Ben is leaning to his right in the picture while the tower that holds “Big Ben” appears to be leaning to its left in the picture.

  49. Considering there is an * by your first Super Bowl “win”, I don’t think you’ll be passing Bradshaw anytime soon.

I have seen as asterisk next to any Super Bowl in any record book or listing anywhere. Keep dreaming.

0 0 So what’s Flacco and the ravens excuse for five straight playoff years, but just one Lombardi. This should be a priceless response. No denying the ravens had a great run and deserve the one trophy they got. Everything came together for them and they made their own luck happen. The refs even helped some. That stuff doesn’t always happen even when you had a better team than the Ravens. So being smug about getting hot at the right time gets really old to those of us having watched eight appearances with six wins.

  51. People talking about ancient Big Ben saga are ignorant and highly embarrassing themselves as one poster said. I guess some people just don’t know the meaning of not charged and not convicted. If any of you were accused of rape and you know you didn’t do it wouldn’t you stand up for your rights. Well that’s exactly what happen to Big Ben and he did . People know he’s a celebrity and they will try and take advantage of him……. Oh and please save your he paid them off comments because its baloney. @scoobies-good post……this is definitely a league geared towards the offense….couldn’t agree more……put up points, that’s the name of the game.

  52. The Georgia victim claims he carried her to a bathroom, locked the door and raped her, while a bodyguard blocked the hallway and another bodyguard kept her friends away. Then, when he was done raping her, she went outside and told a cop she had been raped, was taken to a hospital for a rape kit which shown she had been raped, and then she gave a statement to the police and pursued charges. The criminal case was only dropped when Benny Scumbag paid her a large sum of cash to not testify against him.

The fact that he paid his victim to drop the criminal case doesn’t change anything. It just makes him a serial rapist who got away with it.

  53. @juliusanonymous
you need to get your facts straight.. no charges were ever filed due to lack of evidence so im curious where you found your “evidence” b/c none of it is true you troll

So if I understand you correctly Ray Lewis is then a murderer who got away with it? Interested to hear your answer to that gem.

  55. the excuse is there is no excuse. personally i think the 2011 team that lost to the pats in the afc title game was better than the 2012 team. but 2012 got the trophy. if lee evans doesnt drop the ball….oh well. what happened happened. we regrouped, caught some breaks, and won it all a year later. cant wait for 2013.

  57. “The Georgia victim CLAIMS he carried her to the bathroom”

Thats all I had to read out of this post. She was full of lies trying to collect on Big Bens money. Heck, I could claim I won the lottery, doesn’t mean I did.

  58. Yea I discounted plays that went in the favor of the ravens, only after haters discounted what went the way for the steelers against the hawks, the Harrison int TD, the Hail Mary to Holmes in triple coverage. I was making a point that it works both ways.
The Ben, Eli, Rivers class will most likely end up where the numbers are now. Ben will be in a retooling for 2 years, Eli will have an off year with his 2 receivers contract issues, and Rivers had the teams and still choked. It’s more likely Eli gets back before Ben, and Rivers not at all.
And whoever commented on Bens missed games, no way he should’ve played past the first quarter, he hurt the team that game. But I don’t think batch or leftwich would’ve faired better.
You can not blame Cameron forFlacco’s short comings last season, yea he perked up after Caldwell took over, but Cameron was the OC his whole career to that point and he called 4 straight PO appearance teams. Joe steps up and continues his playoff run magic, get to another Super Bowl or 2 then he will get the respect, until then he is overrated. He will need to be the leader for the money he got.

Can’t wait either to see if the raven fans are as gracious in defeat as they are in victory. I wish the players well and the
Fans, with a few exceptions, a great season. Are they the team to repeat? Lots of subtraction s and additions, but the chemistry has to happen fast and positively as so much leadership is gone and it hurts. If anyone knows the steelers know what the loss of leadership can do.

I’m not going to make excuses for games that happened years ago, that’s why i called out steelers88 in the first place… The bottom line is it’s tough to win the big game, but i’m proud of my team for putting themselves in a position to get there the past five years and even happier they finally got it done last year. Not trying to be smug, just enjoying my teams success. I’m sure you steelers fans can relate, well at least you used to be able to relate… (okay maybe that last part was a little smug)

  61. I’m so tired of homers and the “5 straight years with playoff win”. Big freaking deal, you only have one SB to show for that amazing accomplishment, which means you were losers 80% of the time.

Unless of course your ultimate goal is one playoff win. If that’s the case, you’re a lot like the Packers. Except your QB stinks.

  62. Pretty sad that Ruthlessburger”s Face is Bigger than that of the Legit “Big Ben’s ” . Is rape Legal in England?

  63. We don’t have to make excuses for winning a SB one time when making the playoffs five years in a row. The bottom line is that one one Lombardi a year is given out. And the other teams in the playoffs are good teams.

Ben has made it to three and won two. Frankly, he was not the “reason” the steelers won.

Ben is an outstanding QB and a great competitor. I have no problems saying that as a ravens fan. Our rivalry is the best in the nfl. But personally, I think the ravens are on the upswing and the steelers may be looking at a down year or two. Ben has only played a full season once in his entire career. At 31 his body is already breaking down on him. Conversely, Flacco has not missed a game. Your QB has to be on the field for you to win. You can get lucky like you did with batch, but that won’t win you 4-5 games a year.. And few teams have a backup capable enough to take over like earl morrall did for the colts in 1970. I will say that gradkowski may be one of the best backups in the nfl, but I don’t think you will win a SB with him.

Right now Suggs is the oldest raven defender at 30. I think our defense will be top 5 this year. My only question is who steps up in bold ins spot. If no one can do it effectively, we have no chance to repeat. If one if the young guys blossoms then we have a good shot.

Just ine ravens fan opinion who has much respect for the steelers yet hates them just the same

I’m really surprised, Crown. Usually you don’t open yourself up so easily but here goes:
If losing your last game of the season means you’re a loser, then Ravens and Steelers are tied over the last five years.
If our QB stinks, how did he become the only QB currently playing in the AFCN to be a SB MVP?
If getting to the playoffs and winning a game is meaningless, then what do up call getting Tebowed out of the playoffs and then having to watch the Ravens win at least one playoff game during two years where you played 16 games and then had the playoff door slammed in your face?

Maybe Joe Flacco hasn’t been the most consistent QB game after game, but he sure beats Roethlisbooger season after season. And given his unbroken record of getting the Ravens to the playoffs each year (and winning) he’s undoubtably earned more $ for an organization that hasn’t had to spend a dime because its QB can neither stay out of the hospital nor the police interrogation room.

  65. jmf,

I expect the Steelers to win the show every year. And every year they don’t, they’ve failed. It doesn’t matter if game 16 is their last, or game 19. If its not a SB win, it’s a disappointing season. That’s why I pay no mind to your 8-8 talk. It could’ve been 15-1 and a playoff loss and its still a failed season. You get it yet?

And btw, you’ve officially crossed the line of sanity by commenting Flacco led his team to the playoffs the past 5 years. You must be a new fan, because Bal has reached the playoffs in spite of Flacco, not because of him. And one last point, Ward was also a SB MVP, and he wasn’t even close to being the best. Just hardware for one game – meaningless really.

  66. hey joe…take it easy on crown. clearly he is dealing with the frustration of watching joe’s continued development. that combined with ben’s inabilty to not lead his team to more than 23 pts in a league geared towards offense is eating him up. his laughable attempts to disparage our superbowl mvp are getting more and more desperate. i see a 6th straight playoff appearance in our future hopefully culminating in a 2nd straight lombardi. cant wait to hear what they say if that happens. happy 4th

Unless of course your ultimate goal is one playoff win. If that’s the case, you’re a lot like the Packers. Except your QB stinks.”

0 0 When Joe leads the rat turds to two more SB we can compare results until you do you are still the terriers in the neighborhood barking look at me look at me. Little dogs little minds. Call me when you grow up.

  68. “Flacco’s earned more $ for an organization that hasn’t had to spend a dime because its QB can neither stay out of the hospital nor the police interrogation room.”

Actually jmf, they spent 1.2 billion dimes on its QB that can neither break 50% completion to his current wr’s nor pass up an opportunity for a check-down.

  69. “Bal has reached the playoffs in spite of Flacco, not because of him”

You know, I could have sworn that, in 2011, Flacco had something to do with the sweep of the Steelers. I also have a vague memory of him contributing a teeny tiny bit to the 2012 regular season wins over the Bengals, Patriots, Cowboys, Browns, Raiders, Chargers, and Giants, all of which enabled the Ravens, unlike the 2012 Steelers, to reach the playoffs.

I guess Flacco haters will always say last year’s post season was a fluke, but the Ravens have no history of awarding QBs giant contracts when the defense is was true reason they won the SB. Just ask Trent Dilfer.

So, call Flacco all the names you want. But when you check out Holmes’s grab of that desperation hail mary jumpball into triple coverage against 9-7 Arizona, you’ll see that the true MVP of SB XLIII was Lady Luck, whereas the MVP of SB XLVII was the Elite Joe Flacco.

We’re just as tired of hearing the 6 rings argument when 4 of them came in the 70’s when your team was juicing and free agency didn’t exist. Nofool comes across as an old man so I’d believe him if he said he witnessed those games, but were you even alive back then?

0 1 Yup I am an old man and you very new to football probably the first year watching it unsupervised. Your comments reflect a depth of understanding limited to the confines of Baltimore proper. It’s ok you are not alone judging by your fellow fans. Yes I did see those games and they were great. Hopefully if you live to my age..that is if your mouth and brain don’t get you hurt the ravens will have six rings in the next forty years of your life…don’t count on it.

  72. Let me get this straight because it’s often difficult to understand incoherent drivel when it is peppered with trailer trash insults.

So, to equal Roethlisbooger, you’re saying Flacco would have to (1) play poorly in a Superbowl that the Ravens win only because of bad calls and then (2) lose another Superbowl after spending a fourth of the season being suspended for rape?

    Just checking.
    Arf!
What I was Ben has led his team to the Super Bowl THREE times…very simple…so simple that your immense hatred can’t fog it up. The disrespect you show Ben by mocking his last name reflects your maturity level, which is actually pretty high for the lead Raven troll. Stay on topic troll Flacco wasn’t mentioned in the article.

  73. Ravens fans may get tired of hearing about the Steelers 6 rings but too bad that’s what matters, the steelers have 6 rings and they’ll always hear about it….. not 5 straight playoff appearances by the ravens and one ring to show for it..nobody cares about playoff appearances……. If the ravens had that many rings they would be bragging about it to, I guarantee it, but they don’t. Even in the era of Big Ben and Flacco, Big Ben still tops Flacco….. Flacco has to at least make 2 superbowls to just catch him. The ravens are going to have a tough time this year for those of you thinking they will be lucky enough to win again. Its too hard in this league. You heard it here first.
