Effort to name street after Mike McCarthy hits a snag

AP

There’s a long tradition of naming streets after prominent Packers players and coaches in Green Bay, but a proposal to rename a street after current coach Mike McCarthy has hit a snag.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt has been the leader of the effort to change the name of part of Ashland Avenue in honor of the Packers coach, but the proposal calls for changing the street name in neighboring Ashwaubenon and De Pere as well. The De Pere City Council has decided to send the proposal for further evaluation of the cost of the change.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that the city council wants to look at whether or not grant money should be used to compensate businesses and individuals affected by the change, presumably because they would have to change materials featuring their address to reflect the change. Officials also wondered if it was a wise idea to change the name of a street before the honoree’s career has come to an end.

Local leaders thought they had done that when they named a street after former Packers quarterback Brett Favre in 2008, but, as you’re likely aware, Favre had other things in mind.

  1. I’m pretty sure you can just rename a section of the street.

I take one street on a daily basis that, during my commute, has 3 different names.

  2. Win another SuperBowl and be retired for five years. That’s not too much to ask. It is way too soon right now…..for him or any special players.

  3. Rename a street for him?? No way is he even slightly deserving of such a great honor from arguably the best sports organization in the world.
Lose that “deer in the headlights” look you get when you’re behind in a close game. WIN some of those games and then maybe…..MAYBE you might be considered worthy of this honor.

  4. He DONT deserve that yet! lol Midas well name a street after the Offensive Coordinator too.. ! Superbowl win/appearance is not Worthy

You said that as though you’ve actually been there before. I’m pretty sure the L doesn’t go that far and we know you don’t own a car. You saw it on TV….. right?

Mike McCarthy: 1 Super Bowl Win.

Chicago Bears: 1 Super Bowl win.

Minnesota Vikings: No Super Bowl wins.

Yeah, I can see why you’re all jealous.

    Why?
