Patriots unveil new logo

patriots

The Patriots have done plenty in the last few weeks to try to change their image, from cutting Aaron Hernandez, to offering free trade-ins on his jersey.

Now, they’re changing the entire logo.

Via NESN.com, the Patriots announced the changes today, with big, blocky blue letters replacing the old, white, cursive script. The “flying Elvis” logo also moves from the side of the mark to the middle.

The change won’t impact their game-day uniforms, but will cause them to order new letterhead and apparel.

The old stuff is probably being used to scrub any last vestige of Hernandez out of the franchise’s history.

Jim Nantz will probably fawn over this for days.

  2. mediasloppy says: Jul 3, 2013 4:42 PM

I think it looks like a nice upgrade of the old one.

  3. jaggedmark says: Jul 3, 2013 4:44 PM

That logo is a lot more boring than what’s currently going on with that organization.

  4. blacknole08 says: Jul 3, 2013 4:45 PM

Go back to the Minute man in the 3 point stance. That’s classic.

  5. rc33 says: Jul 3, 2013 4:45 PM

    Looks better, IMO.

I’ve never been a fan of the flying face for the Pat’s (coming from a Bills fan), but it’s hard to abandon it after all of their success. The subtle change is an enhancement with or without the Aaron Hernandez debacle. A sweet Pat’s helmet logo would be of a weathered American flag circa 1776… anyway’s tomorrow we can all embrace Patriotism! #billsmafia

  7. daysend564 says: Jul 3, 2013 4:46 PM

    It only vaguely resembles Hernandez.

  8. 69finfan says: Jul 3, 2013 4:46 PM

On another note what did A Hern have for lunch today?

  9. brownsfanincali says: Jul 3, 2013 4:47 PM

I still love the old original logo from the 60′s, but I’m a Browns fan so I admit that I’m no logo expert.

  10. Mitch Cumstein says: Jul 3, 2013 4:48 PM

Good move. The cursive was cheesey.

  11. donstylo says: Jul 3, 2013 4:51 PM

That lettering is very Boston Red Sox-ey.

  12. cajunaise says: Jul 3, 2013 4:52 PM

    Remove “P-A-T”, add “L-A-U-G-H”.

  13. marima07 says: Jul 3, 2013 4:56 PM

Gah! Looks like barbed wire running through the name.

  14. justintuckrule says: Jul 3, 2013 4:58 PM

Happier than Paul Revere with a cell phone.

  15. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 3, 2013 5:00 PM

    Dull and lame. It sucks.

  16. howmanyringsyourteamgot says: Jul 3, 2013 5:00 PM

Looks forced and corny, especially the A and the T. The font gave me visions of another Jaguars uniform change.

  17. mksnpcola says: Jul 3, 2013 5:01 PM

Dolphin fan here and proud American. It is hard not to like any logo that has a color scheme and ties to our American History. Never been a New England fan but will always be a Patriot (just not in the football sense).

  18. PeterKingLovesCoqAVin says: Jul 3, 2013 5:14 PM

It doesn’t appear they bothered with such modern frivolities such as “focus groups” or “multiple concepts” or “iterative process” or “professional designers.”

  19. raiderlyfe510 says: Jul 3, 2013 5:18 PM

Changing a logo that’s associated with a dynasty. Not very smart.

  20. s2mikey says: Jul 3, 2013 5:20 PM

Now alls they need is a new team to complete the refresh. :)

  21. thetruthcampaign says: Jul 3, 2013 5:20 PM

Bill Polian says the Colts steered clear of that new logo when it was proposed to them.

  22. thenew013 says: Jul 3, 2013 5:31 PM

    i liked the cursive better.

  23. kate773 says: Jul 3, 2013 5:46 PM

I like it. Kinda old fashioned. Better than the white cursive.

Of course, Pat Patriot was the best. But that’s never coming back, sadly.

  24. steelbloggin says: Jul 3, 2013 5:51 PM

    Did Putin approve this?

  25. rodneyharrisonstruckstick says: Jul 3, 2013 5:58 PM

First thing I thought was Jags.. bummed, this is week. Cursive all the way. Hadn’t heard a word about this up until now. hmm.

  26. capegolfer says: Jul 3, 2013 6:06 PM

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Never should have changed from the minute man in the three finger stance.

  27. johnnyjagfan says: Jul 3, 2013 6:42 PM

    Coincidence.

  28. greenarcher2013 says: Jul 3, 2013 7:28 PM

Deployed with the 399th combat support hospital back in 2006. our logo was the Minuteman. The football was replaced with a medical bag. That one will always be my favorite. this new one is totally lame.

  29. thetruthcampaign says: Jul 3, 2013 8:52 PM

Putin stole the actual logo and offered this one up as a replacment.

  30. vipod4ever says: Jul 3, 2013 8:55 PM

Updated MM would have been cool. So tired of the cash grab from most franchises. For fans of the Bears, Steelers,Packers, Cowboys, Browns, Giants, and the Raiders you can wear your Granda’s jersey….tradition and continuity is classy.

  31. nolahxc says: Jul 3, 2013 8:58 PM

    I like it!

  32. icebowler says: Jul 3, 2013 9:00 PM

Due to recent events, I’m going to refer to them as The New England Hoodies from now on.

  33. yungbuss says: Jul 3, 2013 9:38 PM

It matches the patriots image. I like it. Much better than that cartoon type one

  34. jrcoop says: Jul 3, 2013 10:01 PM

It does appear a bit more “manly”. Not that there’s anything wrong with “unmanly”. I am trying to figure out why the letters have warts. Or are those zits?

  35. i10east says: Jul 3, 2013 10:29 PM

    @howmanyringsyourteamgot

Right on. That ‘A&T’ thing make it look like the Jags old wordmark (2009-2012).

No! Some of my worst childhood memories include that logo, I’m happy to never see it again, it represents nothing but sucking to many patriot fans.

  37. thefox61 says: Jul 3, 2013 11:12 PM

    Ooooh Aaaaah

  38. mpops86 says: Jul 3, 2013 11:18 PM

With such a quick turnaround, I wonder if they had this design already queued up and just decided to use it sooner than they were expecting. I doubt they drew up a bunch of logos, assembled focus groups, gathered feedback, and analyzed results in the last two weeks.

  39. garity says: Jul 3, 2013 11:32 PM

I still looks like something from the post office, and the post office sucks.

  40. rextraordinaire says: Jul 3, 2013 11:32 PM

There isn’t enough kerning on the typeface, it makes it compsitionally uncanny and suffers from-

Er, I think it would look better if the individual letters were closer together.

  41. martyworld says: Jul 4, 2013 12:43 AM

like the lettering on the OLD logo, hate the graphic head, the head looks even MORE out of place on top of the old-fashioned “drugstore” lettering on the new one… I say keep the “Elvis” lettering, ditch the streaming head, and resurrect the old minuteman mascot…

some things you just shouldn’t mess with, it’s sort of like changing the Quaker Oats guy, or the Lipton Tea man…

  42. stoney18 says: Jul 4, 2013 12:48 AM

YUCK! Best move would have been to bring back the Minuteman “Pat Patriot.” Have never liked the ‘Flying Elvis.” Bought a new Pats t-shirt by searching internet for one with Pat P on it … and found one. This is lame. What’s with the little thingy on two of the letters? This is right up there with a bad draft choice. Not good!

  43. terumiarai says: Jul 4, 2013 1:24 AM

I hope they didn’t pay the person/firm that drew that up.

  44. Corey Jeppesen says: Jul 4, 2013 2:20 AM

As a designer, they didn’t change their logo. They updated their typography. That being said, I like the change.

  45. steeltownray says: Jul 4, 2013 8:23 AM

Ohhh, yeah, would ya look at that!
The cheating, Randy Moss, Aaron Hernandez…you look at this logo and it’s like all that other stuff never happened!
    Well played, Patriots…well played.

  46. jimmyjames65 says: Jul 4, 2013 8:42 AM

It’s not going to help them win anything.

  47. blackcatninja says: Jul 4, 2013 8:58 AM

Oh no they placed the flying elvis under RI (boring…Rhode Island); now if they had put it under RIO, then could really get the party started!

  48. therolandobottom says: Jul 4, 2013 2:32 PM

Hideous logo and uniform no matter what they do.
