Report: Panthers talking to Quintin Mikell

Christian Ponder, Quintin Mikell AP

With rosters at 90 and weeks of OTAs under their belts, teams should have an early sense of their rosters at the moment.

And if they’re bringing in veterans, it’s safe to assume those teams aren’t crazy about their depth.

According to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, the Panthers have been talking with former Eagles and Rams safety Quintin Mikell, and a deal could be done soon.

The Panthers have a real hash at safety, with one decent starter (Charles Godfrey) and a bunch of guys duking it out for the other spot. Contenders include an undrafted rookie (Robert Lester), an overmatched special teamer (Haruki Nakamura), another team’s draft bust (Mike Mitchell) and other less-known commodities (roll that around in your head for a second).

Mikell would probably vault to the top of that heap quickly, which says more about the heap than Mikell.

I heard to improve game day experience Panthers would pick one fan each quarter to play safety. The team announced they view this as an upgrade to current crop of safeties

Great, can use all the competition at the safety spot….any other corners out there would be nice to compete as well..

Please, please, please add some secondary help! Our front 7 looks great but if we don’t fix that secondary, it’s gonna be a loooooong year.

The midnight shift fry cook at Krystal would be an upgrade over Nakamura. DJ was serviceable late last year. Do work Gettleman!

Philly hasn’t been able to fill the hole at Safety since cutting this guy loose…

Why move Quintin Mikell? Sheldon Brown? Lito Sheppard? and of course, Brian Dawkins?

    All bone-headed Banner moves.

    so glad he’s gone

Anybody who calls himself “Iknoweverything” is oviously a troll….However, Darin, this is slimy reporting. Sure, this site is about rumors. Share the rumor. But do not insult the readers by bashing the players at SS without supporting facts. Your suppositions and opinions on the lot of safeties and how well Mikell will fit here is not news or rumor.

Still won’t stop teams for passing for 500 yards a game.

  9. mhs8031 says: Jul 3, 2013 2:52 PM

For example: In 2012, Mikell had “101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles.” while improving his coverage skills.

I now see why stats were not used to support your suggestion that he sucks.

Mikell will definetely help. Coverage skills are still a tad suspect but he hits like a truck and is a great blitzer.

And yet, isn’t it curious how Philly’s fall did not happen until Roseman took over? When Philly went away from analytics and towards overpaying free agents ie. Babin, DRC, Cullen Jenkins and Nmabdi that’s when things truly fell apart.

Safety was an obvious weakness last season for the Panthers (Falcons game in ATL) which is why it was amazing, that they didn’t draft one.

Instead they pick two DTs with their first two picks. Really? Now a panic to find a safety which everyone else knew they needed. You can’t fix stupid.
