Brandon Myers excited about opportunity with Giants

In recent years, the Giants have had a hard time holding onto their starting tight ends.

Kevin Boss and Martellus Bennett both left as free agents after strong years as targets for Eli Manning and Jake Ballard got claimed by the Patriots on waivers last year even though they knew he’d miss the entire 2012 season as a result of a knee injury. The obvious takeaway is that playing in the Giants offense does good things for players at the position.

That hasn’t escaped the attention of Brandon Myers, who signed with the team as a free agent this offseason after catching 79 passes with the Raiders last season. Myers signed a four-year deal, although he’s really left with a one-year, $2.25 million sontract since the final three years of the deal are voidable. Myers says he isn’t focused on that nearly as much as on the chance he has to thrive as a member of the Giants.

“It all worked out for the best,” Myers said, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “I’m with a great organization, a proven team with a proven quarterback, in an offense that if you’re a tight end and you can get open, you’ll get a lot of opportunities to catch the ball.”

Myers has a base salary of $4 million in 2014 if he sticks with the Giants on his current deal, something that should have a decent chance of happening if he puts together a year similar to the one he put together in Oakland last year. If he doesn’t stay around, recent history says he’ll likely land on his feet somewhere.
