Broncos exec arrested for DUI, crashing into police car

russell_matt

This is the time of year NFL front offices worry the most about players.

But those front offices aren’t exempt from the concern, either.

According to CBS4 in Denver, Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was arrested and jailed over the weekend on charges including DUI and crashing into a police car.

According to the report, Russell was involved in an accident in the town of Frisco, and then crashed into a police car in the nearby town of Breckenridge. An officer who was in the car was hospitalized with what was described as minor injuries.

“Any time anybody is impaired and hits a fully-marked police car that person should not have been driving in the first place,” said Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid. “It’s a dangerous profession.”

Russell was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving resulting in injury, having an open container of alcohol in his car, and failure to display proof of insurance.

Russell was released on a $1,000 bond Sunday.

The former linebacker was viewed as John Elway’s heir apparent on the personnel side of the organization, and they even blocked the Chargers from interviewing him for their General Manager position this offseason.

If your driving around with an open container and playing bumper cars with a marked cop car….you probably have a drinking problem.

This should get Aaron Hernandez off the front pages in Denver, at least.

As eloquent and acute an observation as I’d expect from a cop.

I hope the above photograph is his booking shot.
If not, assuming that it is his Bronco personnel portrait, why wouldn’t you wash and comb your hair before sitting for it? Perhaps you were out all night before engaging in 12-ounce wrist-curls?

  43. bullcharger says: Jul 8, 2013 5:15 PM

There were 1.4 million arrests in 2010 for DUI within the US.

Number of people in the US between the ages of 18-44 was 112,806,642 as of 2010.

That covers the NFL age group and most of the people that get caught for DUIs are also in that age group.

If you look at the total arrests as a percentage of that age group it is 1.2%

the NFL has about 1700 players. 42 were arrested in 2012 for DUI. As a percentage, that is 2.4%.

That is a pretty small sample, but I think the NFL rate of DUI is roughly about double that of the whole population for that age group or more.

  45. qdog112 says: Jul 8, 2013 5:17 PM

Most players would be done after this. The NFL will cover for him like the cops already have. $1000 bail. Yeah, OK.

  47. jacktheraven says: Jul 8, 2013 5:23 PM

I would blame R. Moore. If he woulda covered that pass, Manning wouldn’t have thrown that pic in 2ot and Broncos win the SB

This guy would’ve been praised for this within the locker room pre-wussing-down-of-America. Now it’s all about PR spin, litigious culture and perfectly crafted uber apologies. LAME!

This stuff happened every week in the 70s-90s. I had a friend who worked as a sound tech for a MAJOR TV network in the 90s. During a popular celebrity golf tourney (that’s still popular today), she used to rip joints between holes with John Elway.

    Party on Russell

  49. auscon4 says: Jul 8, 2013 9:16 PM

I can just hear Hernandez… “From my experience, if that was a rental that you totaled, you better have chipped in for the insurance… I’m just sayin’”.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yeah man, party on. It is great fun to drive so drunk that you crash into police cars. It would have been even more fun if it had been a pedestrian. Extra points if they’re carrying a baby!

I’m all in agreement that the country is over litigious, but drunk driving is stupid and dangerous. No one should be patting this guy on the back, they should be kicking him in the a$$. As far as ripping jays between holes, that’s a far cry from operating a 2 ton death machine impaired by alcohol.
