The 49ers make a special teams addition

Andy Lee AP

Sometimes when teams sign new players just before camp, existing players are shaking in their shoes.

Sometimes, it means the incumbent players can put their feet up.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the 49ers have agreed to terms with punter Colton Schmidt, an undrafted rookie from UC-Davis.

Considering the 49ers already employ one of the best punters in the game in Andy Lee, and considering Lee just got a contract extension last summer, the effect of this one’s clear.

Lee’s training camp just got a lot easier, since there’s another leg to handle some of the practice reps.

I thought Chris Kluwe was the best punter in the league.

Or the 9ers don’t plan on punting enough to justify paying a top 3 punter.

J.T. O’Sullivan is the greatest UC-Davis Aggie turned 49er of all time according to my wife who was in the UC-Davis marching when he was a senior. But then again I’m the only one required to agree with her.

Niners have made some actual additions to their special teams this year though, including a huge upgrade at kicker (to one that isn’t mentally broken) and upgrades to the coverage units. What this says to me is that the Niners consider the kickoff return for a TD to start the second half as every bit as big a reason they lost the SB as the inability to punch it in at the end of the game.

While we’re on the subject, can people please stop lazily saying that the Niners were 5 yards from a championship. If we’d scored, we would’ve left Flacco with just under 2 minutes to tie or win with a FG. The way our defense played that game, I wouldn’t’ve bet against them. It looked like we were playing Ray Lewis at every position in the secondary.

They are going to need all the punters they can find.

If Andy was not a punter he’d be a tailor park guy

smart move, they now have 2 kickers that kick opposite legs of each other meaning players get a better feel of how a right vs leg punt/kick feels and looks

Opposing special teams will be stymied when the 49ers deploy the 2 punter backfield.
