Sometimes when teams sign new players just before camp, existing players are shaking in their shoes.
Sometimes, it means the incumbent players can put their feet up.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the 49ers have agreed to terms with punter Colton Schmidt, an undrafted rookie from UC-Davis.
Considering the 49ers already employ one of the best punters in the game in Andy Lee, and considering Lee just got a contract extension last summer, the effect of this one’s clear.
Lee’s training camp just got a lot easier, since there’s another leg to handle some of the practice reps.
