Report: Packers working on extension for Morgan Burnett

Green Bay Packers Sam Shields celebrates his fourth-quarter interception against the Minnesota Vikings with teammate Morgan Burnett during their NFL NFC wildcard playoff football game in Green Bay Reuters

Packers safety Morgan Burnett more than doubled his salary for the 2013 season by reaching incentives in the rookie deal he signed after being drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft.

That gives him a higher starting point for discussions on an extension before his contract expires at the end of the year and those discussions have reportedly already gotten underway. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports that the Packers are trying to “hammer out” a new deal with Burnett right now.

Burnett has started all 36 games he’s played for Green Bay, including every game of the last two seasons, and he recorded 123 tackles last season. Burnett has also done a nice job in coverage for the Pack, who presumably see Burnett as a player they’d like to keep as a cornerstone of their secondary for some time to come.

With Charles Woodson gone, he’ll be the senior member of the safety corps in 2013 and continued progress along the lines of the last two years could put him in consideration for a spot in the Pro Bowl when the year comes to a close. If he hasn’t reached agreement on an extension by then, he could also become a candidate for the franchise tag.

He’s a good player, but everyone pales in my eyes compared to Nick Collins.

This guy has been a fine replacement for Nick Collins. Still bums me out what happened to that guy. Even though his pick 6 in the SB was the difference in the game, still hate to see that happen to anyone, especially an all around good dude like Nick Collins.

Donovan McNabb is “outraged” the Pack is trying to sign Burnett to a new deal, stating that “he hasn’t proven anything yet” and added that “if the Packers and the city of Green Bay were serious about winning and showing me the respect I deserve they’d sign me instead.” He then vomited and fled the scene.

Ever since hawk cut his hair, i can never tell the difference between him and chad greenway. Thank god they wear different jerseys. They are the exact same player.

I’m hoping you’re only referring to looks because Hawk is nowhere close to Greenway as a player

Very good player and still improving. I think Woodson being gone is going to help Burnett become more of a leader and eventually help the defensive backfield as a whole. Less gambling, more adhering to the plan.

    ________

Let me give you some help for next time you see them. Greenway is the one who is good. Greenway is the one with multiple Pro Bowl appearances. Greenway is the one who wasn’t overdrafted by about 80 spots.

Hmm…. Hawk wasn’t overdrafted by 80 spots. A bit of a reach there Rick. He’s not a pro-bowl guy but he is consistent.

Now Erasmus James and Troy Williamson, those guys were overdrafted by at least 80 spots. I can’t remember, but who did the Packers take that round after the Vikings passed on him TWICE by taking those guys?

Id rather have Greenway than Hawk so that sums it up for me.

As for Morgan Burnett, good idea getting him inked now because hes gonna have a Nick Collins type breakout season for GB this year. Don’t forget that Collins had 3 pretty ordinary seasons before busting out with 7 INTs and 3 returned for TDs in his 4th season.

Burnett missed most of his rookie season with a torn ACL but this will be his 4th year and hes poised for a breakout IMHO.

    ____

Well, pick #85 is the back half of the third round. Sounds about right to me.

James and Williamson haven’t played with the Vikings for years. When they make mistakes, they don’t give them giant new contracts and argue that they’re better than established Pro Bowlers. (In hindsight, they never should have trusted someone from Wisconsin.)

And what kind of GM would draft a QB in the first round when they already have a QB in his prime coming off one of the best seasons in NFL history?

Christian ponder was a reach by about 800 picks. He shouldn’t be in the NFL.

Not that you guys will ever admit that he’s anything short of the best NFL QB in history.

But back to something besides putting fans of a college team in their place:

Morgan is a solid Safety. He isn’t going to be a Palomalu or Reed, but he’s not going to be a Minnesota player, either. Somewhere between is where he needs to be, especially with the best young defense in the division.
