Cowboys cut Lawrence Vickers, their only fullback

In another sign that the NFL fullback is going the way of the dodo, the Dallas Cowboys have just released the only fullback on their roster.

Lawrence Vickers, who played in all 16 games last season and started six of them, was waived on Friday afternoon.

The move suggests that the Cowboys are planning more two-tight end formations this season. Dallas drafted tight end Gavin Escobar in the second round to go along with tight end Jason Witten.

Vickers, who had back surgery this offseason, was scheduled to make $1.2 million this year. Before signing with the Cowboys last year, Vickers played one season in Houston and five seasons in Cleveland.

    R.I.P Fullback

If football ever reaches international success like soccer, I think you’ll be back. Hopefully..

DeMarco Murray says he can rush for 2,000 yards. Now without a fullback. Best of luck with that, DM. As a lifelong Cowboys fan, I can’t even imagine the direction they’re moving. It’s like let’s don’t commit to anything in particular, and maybe we’ll confuse them long enough to score. Have mercy on our souls.

the new fullback will be everybody’s 2nd back…because they will be expected to read the defense just like the 1st back.
they don’t don’t to blow the guy out of the hole, just don’t lose the hole or go backwards.

I’ll bet they have a fullback on the roster opening weekend.

Pretty sad….I saw a stat recently that the average salary of a fullback in the NFL is now significantly lower than kickers and long-snappers.

Meh. They can miss the playoffs without him.

“pats haven’t had a fullback in many years”
when you have brady and manning you don’t need one.

Not sure about dodo birds, but it’s hard to get fullbacks to breed with each other.

Back to the Browns to plow the road for TR

Expect to see more of James Hannah out there along with Witten and Escobar. Also, Witten is one of the better blocking Tight Ends in the league. Demarco can follow him :0)

Not going to help Leach’s leverage.

i know we’re never supposed to use the M word on here, but in the 08 version of a popular NFL video game vickers was a perennial probowler for my squad, the River City Rhinos.
personally, i can’t wait till some offensive innovator figures out how to make the FB a relevant weapon again.

They’ll line up tight ends in the backfield. Staple of a Callahan offense

Making room for that new contract for Jerrahs main man Josh Brent!

COME ON BACK TO CLEVELAND LAWRENCE!! Browns just so happen to have a glaring need there since he left – the best Browns FB since the 80s. It’s just too bad Ray Lewis retired so he can’t tiptoe at the line and pretend to “read the play” while avoiding getting blown up by #47!!! Lewis wanted NO PART of Vickers.

This is EXACTLY why Vonta Leach isn’t getting that sweet multi-year deal he wants. The days of having a guy on your team that is a blocker ONLY and isn’t an O-lineman are just about done. Most teams these days only use a FB on 33% or less of their plays and they can use the 3rd string TE for those. These days it’s hard to get on the field as a skill position player if you have no skills as a receiver.

I have to wonder how Larry Centers would do in today’s NFL.

  21. hobokenbill says: Jul 12, 2013 9:02 PM

That’s why that kid from the Chiefs last year is makung a roster…Nate Eachus….he runs well as a RB and played FB last season.

Vickers’ blocking last year was not very effective which contributed to a weak rushing game. They are going the TE formation although actually Escobar is more of a receiver than a blocker.

Not sure how all this helps the run game.

This guy is bait for vontae. Welcome to miami vickers (tempararily)

Doesn’t matter as long as Jerry “Meddling” Jones is in the way.

  25. lawyermalloy says: Jul 13, 2013 3:51 AM

I think we can safely assume that any move by Jerry Jones is the wrong one!

  26. mcarey032 says: Jul 13, 2013 7:03 AM

Larry centers would do quite well as he had great hands.
