Large turnout for FCS lineman Michael Bamiro’s pseudo pro day

Michael Bamiro

Through a sizable list of unforeseen circumstances Stony Brook offensive lineman Michael Bamiro is looking to make the jump to the NFL. One thing that sets Bamiro apart, however, is that he hasn’t had to go through the draft process and gets to enter the league as a free agent.

Now NFL teams are trying to catch up on evaluating a player that is suddenly available for employment.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOXSports.com, scouts from 22 different teams were on hand for a workout Bamiro held on Thursday. Per Garafolo’s story earlier this week, an NFC personnel director said Bamiro would have been a possible mid- to late-round selection if he was in the draft pool.

He’s a (good) prospect. Good size and ability. He’d probably be a fifth- or sixth-round pick, though I don’t know how much tape people have watched of him,” he said.

We detailed the reasons behind Bamiro’s unique situation earlier this week. In short, the NCAA denied his request for an additional season of eligibility and he should have been eligible for the NFL Draft in April – only no one knew it at the time. He also doesn’t meet the criteria for the supplemental draft as he isn’t an underclassman.

So Bamiro gets to be a free agent from day one. It seems unlikely he’ll have to wait long to find a team willing to sign him.

Just not the 49ers or Seahawks simply because I’m worn out on the phrase “the rich get richer.”

Someone will pick him up and he’ll a good spare lineman to fill in when a real lineman goes down.
