Add Anthony Spencer to play-out-tag list

With this afternoon’s deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term deals with their teams, several have already pulled the plug.

Along with the previously reported Colts punter Pat McAfee and Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton, it appears Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will play out the year on his one-year offer, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network.

Of course, talks broke off last month on a long-term deal, which made it appear unlikely he’d be tied to the Cowboys beyond this season, after t tags.

Spencer’s already signed his $10.6 million tender.

It’s a pretty good deal for Spencer as it is. Fans are watching to see if Spencer will be a one year wonder and also interested to see how he performs at defensive end in the 4-3 this year.

Should have locked him up a few yrs ago and would have reaped the benefits of a lower cap figure into his lower 30’s. Now its a wait and see game that would fill a major void if he blows up this year.

Spencer didn’t prove squat until this past year. boys have a history of overpaying after 1 year of solid play…Tyrone Crawford now the future

Good, we can reap the benefits of him playing an audition year for his next big contract, then wave goodbye when another team overpays him next year with a gaudy long term deal.
