Stephen Hill sees deep playoff run from Jets

Apparently rookie quarterback Geno Smith isn’t the only member of the New York Jets seeing big things for the team this season.

Smith said the Jets would be playoff-bound following being selected by the Jets in the second round of the NFL Draft in April. Now receiver Stephen Hill has echoed Smith’s prognostication for the Jets this season.

Hill spoke with the NFL Network recently and said he sees the Jets playing well into January.

Oh yes, definitely,” Hill said when asked if the Jets would make the playoffs. “We will be in the playoffs and deep in the playoffs.”

It would be the first trip to the playoffs for the Jets in three seasons after going 6-10 last year and 8-8 in 2011. For the Jets to make Smith and Hill’s predictions a reality, they’ll have to win more than one game against teams with winning records. A 35-9 victory over the Indianapolis Colts were their only such victory a season ago.

Hill appeared in 11 games for the Jets as a rookie last season. After a big opening week against the Buffalo Bills with five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, Hill struggled to find consistency before landing on injured reserve in December. He finished the season with 21 catches for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

Optimism is an admirable quality, but so is realism. This is a wash.

And Blaine Gabbert will lead my Jaguars to a Super Bowl victory this year too.

What do Geno Smith and Stephen Hill have in common, besides both predicting a playoff appearance this year? Neither of them has accomplished crap on an NFL field.

  14. bennyb82 says: Jul 16, 2013 12:56 AM

I am still waiting for the day when a player responds sarcastically and says he expects to miss the playoffs.

  15. blackfootkiller says: Jul 16, 2013 12:59 AM

Have they started drug testing yet?

  16. yousuxxors says: Jul 16, 2013 1:02 AM

for this to happen hill would need to become the number one receiver he has the athletic ability to be along with smith following the trend of rookie qbs to be able to ball right away. Rex Ryan’s defenses are always good. do I think it happen, no but anything can happen. its a good attitude to have. its the jets so everyone will kill them for saying this.

  17. ecupatsfan12 says: Jul 16, 2013 1:04 AM

Any person that thinks Mark Sanchez can lead a team deep into the playoffs without a stacked team supporting him with a straight face deserves an Oscar..I’ll give him that.

  18. japmen says: Jul 16, 2013 1:31 AM

So a guy who had 163 yards and one TD after week one knows what it takes to make the playoffs?

  26. ozymandias121 says: Jul 16, 2013 2:46 AM

I see him dropping more balls in the first game this season than wins by the Jets in the playoffs. All that potential being wasted away in the Jets crappy organization. Then again maybe potential is all he will ever be.

  45. jr507 says: Jul 16, 2013 7:24 AM

Queue the typical anti-Jets posts – several making fun of Hill believing in his team, more QB/buttfumble cracks, and the scattered Rex is fat comment. Does that about cover it?

Good for Hill, now back it up. If this kid holds onto the ball, nobody will be laughing at him a year from now. He has the skill set to be a star if he cures the dropsies.

  46. lrjets says: Jul 16, 2013 7:30 AM

Hill caught some passes uncovered at Jets West and is now “Yapping Like A Jet”.

This Namath-era Jets fan is finally tiring of it.

    Shut up, play, shut up!

  48. Obama's Ballsack says: Jul 16, 2013 7:36 AM

“Stephen Hill sees deep playoff run from Jets”

Funny because he can’t even run a play deep lol

Did anybody get the joke? Well all know the Jets are joke of organization, Sanchez can’t throw the ball deep and Hill drops alot of balls. So both of them can’t execute a deep ball. It’s a nice play on words.

  49. whatjusthapped says: Jul 16, 2013 7:44 AM

I would think by now the Jets would have a meeting with all their players and the PR department. Instructions would be simple, tell the press you are working hard, tell the press that you plan on be successful but whatever you do, stay away from predictions, guarantees, and other statements of fantasy.

โ€œOh yes, definitely,โ€ Hill said when asked if the Jets would make the playoffs. โ€œWe will be in the playoffs and deep in the playoffs.โ€

The Jets will be deep in a number of things this year, but it wont be the playoffs.

  61. touchdownroddywhite says: Jul 16, 2013 8:36 AM

  62. jda129 says: Jul 16, 2013 8:36 AM

  63. piffordt says: Jul 16, 2013 8:45 AM

They actually can go 11-5 without beating a single team that had a winning record from 2012. Odds are that won’t happen, but there are many examples of a “crappy” team that makes a run to the playoffs. Two years ago many experts were writing that the 49ers (6-10 in 2010) were positioning themselves for Andrew Luck and they went 13-3 with Alex Smith.

  64. jjackwagon says: Jul 16, 2013 8:46 AM

What would expect him to say? But realisitically they have a one-in-three shot to finish at the bottom of the division or to finish second in the division.

  65. pettytom says: Jul 16, 2013 8:53 AM

Playoffs? Are you kidding me? Playoffs????? You want to talk about playoffs???????

  66. steelnucs says: Jul 16, 2013 8:59 AM

If by “deep playoff run” he means running 10 miles to the stadium to watch the playoffs from the stands, he is correct.

  67. ryang44 says: Jul 16, 2013 10:05 AM

Give him a break…what do you want him to say, no. He is on the team and he knows how they’re coming along.

  68. nananatman says: Jul 16, 2013 10:24 AM

They must be high, blame ROC nation.

  69. ksiner says: Jul 16, 2013 10:45 AM

He does realize he’s talking about the New Jersey Jets right?

  70. yankees218 says: Jul 16, 2013 12:50 PM

There is a diff between running your mouth and being confident in your team, when answering a question from a reporter. When a player says his team sucks and there’s no way they make the playoffs, that’s when there would be a problem.

  71. stevent92 says: Jul 16, 2013 2:08 PM

He probably means the Winnipeg hockey team

  72. lrjets says: Jul 16, 2013 3:54 PM

    ksiner says:Jul 16, 2013 10:45 AM

He does realize heโ€™s talking about the New Jersey Jets right?

I’d bet Met Life Stadium is closer to Manhattan, NY, than the team you root for is to its namesake.
That’s if you follow football. That’d be another good bet.

  73. kev86 says: Jul 16, 2013 7:00 PM

    Butter fingers

  74. piffordt says: Jul 16, 2013 9:41 PM

Seriously, what do you expect him to say when asked if they will make the playoffs? I expect every player in the NFL answer “yes.” What is he going to say, I think we are rebuilding and if we are lucky we will get to 6 wins again…Hell no, he better say yes we are going to make it. Now tap into your inner Herm for this one “You play to win the game, Hello…”

  75. fel66 says: Jul 16, 2013 9:56 PM

To the Jets whole team talk is cheap !!! Just shut the f..k up and show us with actions on the field let your play show how good you are cause all we jets fan see and hear from the Jets is garbage .

  76. dlk47823 says: Jul 19, 2013 2:42 PM

I’m sure the fans of the 20 teams who did not make the playoffs would rather have their young players predict a losing season. If you can’t see it, you can’t do it. Good luck Stephen Hill, use that 4.3 speed to light it up this year!
