Tyrann Mathieu uses Mike Mayock as motivation

Some players say they don’t pay attention to the media. Cardinals rookie defensive back Tyrann Mathieu says one member of the media is providing him with motivation this year.

Mathieu wrote on Twitter that he’s thinking about NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, who expressed some skepticism about Mathieu heading into the draft. And Mathieu even said that after his first game-changing play in the NFL, he’ll blow a kiss to Mayock to show that Mayock made him better.

For the record, Mayock was never outlandishly critical of Mathieu. Mayock did, of course, mention that there were questions about Mathieu both on the field and off the field, but everyone who talked about Mathieu mentioned those questions. And Mayock’s prediction that Mathieu would go in the third or fourth round proved to be correct: The Cardinals took Mathieu in the third round, No. 69 overall.

So Mayock didn’t really say much of anything that should have Mathieu upset. But if Mayock motivates Mathieu to make some game-changing plays, well, that will be fine with the Cardinals.

He should read what PFT commenters said about him. He’ll make such a game-changing play they’ll vote him into the Hall of Fame on the spot.

If you need motivation from somebody else then that’s step #1 that you lack confidence.

Mayock is probably the best at what he does. Between NFL Network and ESPN he is the best hands down.

  5. JackLeone says: Jul 17, 2013 3:42 PM

There’s a lot of people who said a lot worse. So why he singled Mayock out is beyond me.

  6. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 17, 2013 3:43 PM

Mayock is pretty good, but he’s very inconsistent and quite sloppy and way off the mark on too many evaluations. I don’t think he’s in the Top 5 of best scout pundits. Although I probably would have said that in the past, no way, not anymore after too gaffes he has made.

Mike Mayock made the world who actually has NFL Network forget about Mr. Perfect Hair Mel Kiper Jr. His analysis is dead on and he is one of the reasons I was able to tune out ESPN outside of PTI. Maybe the Browns should have hired Mayock instead of Lombardi.

Might wanna just lighten up and move on, Badger. Mayock knows his stuff and you’re not the first person he (ar any draft evaluator) has been critical of. More to the point, do you genuinely believe you don’t deserve any criticism after the past year you just had?

Just play the way you know how.

  10. rcali says: Jul 17, 2013 3:52 PM

You know, I hope he does have a problem free NFL and post NFL career. I hope he takes care of the money he makes. I would hate having to support him on my middle class taxed salary to make sure he gets three squares a day in jail or has his food stamps delivered on time. I think this is something we can all agree with.

Kid was a complete mess off the field for a long documented time, Thats all Mayock brought-up …..

With the amount of mistakes he made with so much potential for his education, career, college life he should rather owe up to it and be able to take the judgement he deserved.

He’d rather defy it ….. coward.

But he got his money, his chance, athletes always do …. THATS IF HE CAN PLAY and stay outta trouble….

    not sure about either.

I wholeheartedly agree. He’s so good I have visions of watching him punch Mel Kiper in the face realizing how bad Mel is.

They’re all liars, they all care and listen, thats why they jump on twitter as fast as they can to say something stupid

When will a coach say, ” Best of luck in your microjournalism career. You’ve just been cut. ”

Tyrann going to wipe that scream right off his face.

  16. stlunatik says: Jul 17, 2013 4:07 PM

only game changing play he’ll be involved in is when Frank Gore runs him over, and outta the game

  17. doe22us says: Jul 17, 2013 4:07 PM

He said blow a, let it go and play ball.. whatever the percieved slight may be.

  18. thegreatgabbert says: Jul 17, 2013 4:07 PM

Mock Wayoff delivered a four octave rant on Tyrann. Which is pretty serious.

  19. thegreatgabbert says: Jul 17, 2013 4:13 PM

Mayock got so worked up seeing The Scream at the museum it ran away in terror.

  20. peytonsneck18 says: Jul 17, 2013 4:14 PM

how about using you want to be a successful nfl player as motivation, not someone elses words about u

  21. myeaglescantwin says: Jul 17, 2013 4:15 PM

wait till he fails his first drug test.
mayock might blow a kiss right back at him.

  22. destructicus says: Jul 17, 2013 4:31 PM

I don’t see any animosity in what Mathieu is saying.

This looks like a kid who got professional criticism from somebody he respects as an authority, and now he’s trying his best to improve on that criticism.

  23. jaysay3178 says: Jul 17, 2013 4:33 PM

Mayock is gonna blow him a kiss the next time his busted for Pot use.

  24. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jul 17, 2013 4:37 PM

Does this mean Mathieu is quitting weed? The issue wasn’t his talent but his issues related to drug tests at LSU.

  25. proanvk says: Jul 17, 2013 4:45 PM

Anybody that has any doubts about Tyrann Mathieu being able to take it to the next level needs to look at his sophmore year highlights for LSU, this guy is a combination of Deion Sanders, Troy Polumalu, and Ed Reed all boiled into one….He will make an impact on the NFL this year baring injury!

  26. 1590t says: Jul 17, 2013 4:54 PM

I realize this is about Mayock – but I have to say that Kiper is the absolute worst evaluator of FB talent I have ever seen.

yea but do u know what maryjane can do to a players ability? messes up his coordination and mental capacity

  28. trublazer says: Jul 17, 2013 5:08 PM

Mayock I say will be better at what he does than this clown as a football player

  29. glazerh8er says: Jul 17, 2013 5:14 PM

Tyrann was pumped up by the talent around him at LSU, almost that whole defense went pro and played against inferior offenses (that’s basically SEC football as a whole). That’s not to discount the offenses, it’s just that SEC defense is on a different level than everything else in college football, maybe because they still let people hit and fly around and there aren’t flags every play in the SEC. So, my opinion, he’s like the Nick Saban of players, great with a great supporting cast, but he will be exposed in the Not For Long.

I wonder how many busts Mel Kiper is responsible for alone in the past 20 years.
