Ravens, No. 1 pick Matt Elam agree to terms

Matt Elam AP

The Ravens and rookie safety Matt Elam have come to terms on a contract, the club announced Thursday morning.

The club’s first-round pick and the No. 32 overall selection, Elam will immediately vie for playing time in a revamped Baltimore safety corps.

Elam intercepted four passes and recorded 76 tackles in 2012 at the University of Florida. He declared for the draft after his junior season. Matt Elam is the brother of veteran NFL safety Abram Elam, who played for Kansas City last season.

Another interesting tidbit: Matt Elam does not have an agent, an uncommon distinction for any rookie, let alone a first-round draft selection.

Per the Ravens, Elam was his own representative during contract negotiations.

The Ravens now have their entire 2013 rookie class under contact, the club said.

It’s a bad sign when Maryland’s number two team loses a lot of players in the offseason and the biggest news they have is signing a role player safety. The Ravens always lose to the Redskins on and off the field.

  2. eagleswin says: Jul 18, 2013 11:09 AM

Is there offset language in his contract? As far as I know that’s pretty much the only thing to negotiate in rookie contracts any more. Kudos to the kid for not paying an agent.

He will need an agent going forward though, it’s just that rookie contracts are pretty much cut and dried now.

The Ravens will finish last in their division and be in line for the #3 or #4 draft pick next year. They will not sniff another superbowl for about 20 to 30 years.

Wish we could play the Deadskins every year. Last two losses to them has resulted in a Ravens Super Bowl. Glad to make that trade. But I doubt RGIII wants to see Ngata again.

If Dalton can elevate, the Bengals are taking the AFC North this coming season. Steelers are still a year away from being back in contention IMO. Ravens broke the bank on Joe “Jump Ball” Flacco. That chicken is coming home to roost.

I understand that logical voice does this only to get a rise and doesn’t believe anything he says but I would like to point out that during the regular season the ravens are 3-2 against Washington and have won more playoff games this past season (4) than Washington has since 1992 (3). Baltimore has also won more playoff games the past 5 years (9) than Washington has even appeared in win or lose since 1992 (8). Its easy to think you are clever when you have all day to sit in your mothers basement and think of things to say but how about using facts going forward.

Your 100% correct Steel as I am questioning why everyone passed on him, kinda like we do with Ed in 04 Ray in 96 and Haloti in 06. How did those late first rounders picks work out Steel? Feel free to bring more to the table next time, in fact all you trolls for any fanbase should try to bring something to the table instead of always bringing that same old tired out shtick.

For Colts Win…Your team has won 1 superbowl since 1971. The other 3 championhips/superbowls won were done as the Baltimore Colts. You chose to take your coach head coach from the Ravens staff and free agents that we would not pay for. You better hope the Ravens aren’t bad for 20 to 30 years since your team enjoys scavaging from Baltimore football.

We all know the Ravens are defending champs. The same analysts that are saying Joe Flacco is the greatest ever are the same ones talking how he was an average QB. I don’t deny Cincy has the pieces to take the North, but don’t forget they are called the bungles for a reason. Steelers cut some of the needed fat this past offseason, just a few more pieces left to trim. Ravens most likely will suffer a bad SB hangover, but I don’t see them finishing worse then the browns.

  27. lovefootball4life says: Jul 18, 2013 12:41 PM

Wow, such hate, sounds like a few Steeler fans are still upset about their #15 preseason ranking.

    ———————————————

Of those four sentences, the only one that actually has some merit is the second one. The Bengals only beat the Ravens last year because the Ravens rested all their starters in time for the playoffs, since they had nothing to play for by the time the game in Week 17 had started. Aside from that win, what quality teams has Andy Dalton beaten in his career thus far? He has one of the top three wide receivers in the game in AJ Green, but if he’s taken out of the game there isn’t much else.

And don’t get me started yet again on the idiotic concept that Flacco’s contract will lead to the Ravens’ demise in 2013.

  42. oldway9 says: Jul 18, 2013 3:20 PM

The Ravens are my favorite team. They did an outstanding job of re-loading the defense with Lewis and Reed gone.
This is especially noticeable in the secondary with the additions of Elam and Huff at each of the safety positions. Dumervil, Canty, and Spears are also great additions to the defense. They could make another Super Bowl appearance if Flacco and the offense can match the production of last year that got them a ring.

  43. facetooth says: Jul 18, 2013 3:22 PM

Word is Jump Ball Joe asked Elam if he too can return kicks for TDs the way Jacoby Jones does, just in case Joe disappears the way he did in the second half of the Super Bowl. Joe also wanted to know if Elam could switch to WR, and grab those blind jump balls the way Anquan used to.

Joe Flacco is the single most overpaid worker in American history.

  51. lagg1 says: Jul 19, 2013 6:24 AM

Ah yes Washington fans-their only salvation is to put down other teams while lifting the spirts of their own deranged craniums. Look children of the potomac and I mean children- YOU HAVE NOT WON IN 21 YEARS- that’s 4 presidents and 3 popes ago- the league is different. You say you have 5 titles well so does Baltimore. That little town you love to hate. The Ravens have played for 17 years and have been to the playoffs 9 of the those years -in fact 9 out of the last 13. Match that and we will listen to your dimwitted prose.

  54. jacktheraven says: Jul 19, 2013 12:40 PM

@ patsisahypocrite. You’ve probably been hating Joe since day 1. Joe’s made you a fool, all the way to SBMVP. You now resort to name calling, “jumpball joe”. How foolish you sound. That could be Montana throwing to Clark in the playoffs. Clark had to “jump” for the ball.
