Tiki Barber: Eli Manning is a better quarterback than Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning, Eli Manning AP

Tiki Barber hasn’t always had the nicest things to say about his former teammate Eli Manning, but the former Giants running back paid the current Giants quarterback a pretty big compliment on Wednesday.

During the show on the CBS Sports Radio Network that Barber hosts with Brandon Tierney and Dana Jacobson, Manning’s spot in the NFL’s quarterback hierarchy came up for discussion. Barber said that he thinks Manning is close to being one of the top five quarterbacks of all time and that he has already passed one heralded quarterback who shares his last name.

“The expectation was that he was never going to be Peyton. I remember having these conversations with people who watched Eli in college, saying, ‘He’s good, but he’s never going to be Peyton, he’s not Peyton.’ Guess what? I think he’s better than Peyton,” Barber said. “Because of clutch. What matters in sports? It’s winning and losing. You get to the stage and what do you do? Eli’s gotten there and he’s won.”

Two Super Bowl rings speak for themselves as do the playoff failures of some very good teams quarterbacked by Peyton Manning, but there’s a flip side to that coin. The Giants have missed the playoffs in three of the last four years, which has to reflect on Eli if you’re going to make winning and losing the crux of your argument. By comparison, Peyton’s teams have missed the playoffs just twice over the course of his career. And that’s before you even delve into the staggering numbers that the elder Manning brother has amassed during his career.

That doesn’t mean you can’t make a case for Eli being the better Manning, but one would have to consist of more than just saying he’s clutch because the job responsibilities go beyond that.

Tiki must be smoking something… Eli has always had a defense behind him and a running game. Peyton lacked both MOST of his time in Indy.

Anyone still calling Eli elite after last season? Eli needs to win a Superbowl to get the benefit of the doubt for a year – Peyton Manning can go one and done and there’s no doubt to his eliteness the way we question Eli’s credentials annually.

Not to mention Eli’s only ever had to score 17 and 21 points to win his Superbowls

It’s like comparing apples and oranges. They played on different teams with different offensive philosophy’s, different strengths and weaknesses. Like comparing Aikman to Marino… They are both likely to be future hall of fame players when all is said and done, I say just let it go. Tiki is just doing his thing as a radio broadcaster and stirring up controversial subjects on his show to get callers to call in on a segment. If PFT posted every ridiculous thing Skip Bayless said, or some of the other talking heads who just like to stir up controversy then there wouldn’t be room left for any actual football news.

I don’t know of that statement is true, but Peyton is 9-11 in the playoffs. Literally one of the biggest choke artists in American sports history. And that’s why he’ll never be in Brady and Montana’s class.

  32. bamboozle99 says: Jul 18, 2013 9:15 AM

  34. tfoz5150 says: Jul 18, 2013 9:24 AM

Wholeheartedly agree. I Like Peyton. Think he’s a funny dude. Plus he always kills my team. But in the clutch he’s a zero. His D won him that SB, along with the Chicago QB.

I’ll take Eli every time with the chips down. Not to mention he’s taken down Brady each time. Something Peyton doesn’t do (06 he got bailed out by Caldwell and co. dropping balls.)

    1. Peyton manning played in a division that sucked balls for years.
    2. Peyton Manning has been knocked out of the playoffs in the first round 8 times
    3. Peyton manning has had the best regular season record several times and has only one championship.
    4. Peyton is a great regular season QB. Missing the chip 10 or 11 times when you’ve made the playoffs is not a great track record.
    5. the media will assassinate the Falcons and Mat Ryan for losing in the playoffs every year, Peyton’s record is a lot worse. let’s start calling him what he really is, a media darling with great regular season numbers.
Eli is hands down better than Peyton. When he gets there, he wins. and I hate the Giants.

  41. truthfactory says: Jul 18, 2013 9:33 AM

To anyone who’s paying attention, Eli Manning wins playoffs games ONLY when his D holds opposing teams to less than 20 points. Meanwhile Peyton has to put up 30+ points in playoffs to win games. Give Manning a team where they have a dominate defense in the playoffs and he’d win Superbowls like Brady and Eli too (like he did in 2006).

  42. gatorprof says: Jul 18, 2013 9:34 AM

Re: “Eli has always had a defense behind him and a running game. Peyton lacked both MOST of his time in Indy.”

No running game? Didn’t Manning enter the NFL with Marshall Faulk as his RB? Wasn’t MF replaced by the NFL rookie of the year in Edgerrin James? In the 7 years that he played in Indy, didn’t EJ average roughly 1300 yds per year, even though he was injured for 1/2 a season? Didn’t he leave as their all time leading rusher? Didn’t he win two rushing titles?

Tell me…when did Eli Manning have RB talent like MF or EJ on the roster?

If you like, when can then move to discussing WR and TE talent.

Indy’s D wasn’t weak, they were a top 10 D during his lone SB ring.

Simply put, Eli has done more with less talent surrounding him.

Peyton was known as a choker until he got a ring and then resumed choking in big games.

Eli has never been known as a choker.

Statistically, Peyton is much better. In a huge game, against all odds, Eli has proven to be much better.

Giants D holds Brady to 17 and 19 points in 2 Suberbowls and that means that “Eli beat Brady”??? Something tells me peyton could have beaten Brady too if his D held them to less than 20 points and get him a couple turnovers too. You’re comparing an apple to an orange.

  48. bucrightoff says: Jul 18, 2013 9:39 AM

Peyton is the better QB overall, but Eli plays better when it matters the most. In a one game situation with everything on the line, I want Eli every time over Peyton. History shows us one is much more clutch than the other,

  49. anon5121 says: Jul 18, 2013 9:41 AM

Eli Manning is in his prime years now and ready to overtake Peyton, finally, but Tiki is sad. He just can’t stop exploiting Eli for is own personal gain.

Before he did it by throwing Eli under numerous buses along with Ronde for company. Now, after Eli’s ascension as a 2x SBMVP (an extraordinary accomplishment for one so young) it’s become blowing smoke up Eli’s arse. Pitiful

  50. truthfactory says: Jul 18, 2013 9:42 AM

Peyton manning is “Elite” all the time. Good team around him, bad team around him, new team around him… Doesnt matter. He carries him into the playoffs every year. 4 AFC Championship games and 2 Superbowl appearances, and 1 SB title.

Eli is only “Elite” when his defense is “Elite”. His D holds teams to under 15 ppg in playoff wins. Anytime they give up more than 20, he’s lost. Enough said.

I just don’t get the hypocrisy here. A great QB wins when it matters, Eli does that and Peyton does not. Eli is more clutch and he shows it and Peyton showed his clutchness during the Ravens playoff game. Enough said. And this is from an Eagle’s fan.

Of course Peyton was the regular season champ. He had the regular season champ coach. Dungy won a ton of games but he should have had more than one Super Bowl win with that team. If Gruden, during his hungry days, would have coached that team, they would have Super Bowl rings for brass knuckles. Eli rides home from games on the short bus.

  57. morgusthemagnificent says: Jul 18, 2013 10:02 AM

Peyton is on the short-list for greatest players of all time. Eli is not even in the conversation.

If Peyton had played for a Bill Walsh, Don Shula, Bill Bilechick, Bill Parcells, or Sean Payton type coach he would, without a doubt, have 5+ rings and there would be no debate as to who is the best ever.

Ever hear of a coach killer? Well, Peyton Manning is whatever you would call the exact opposite that. Just ask Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell!!!!!!

Measuring a quarterback’s skill set based on the number of Super Bowl rings his TEAMS have won is just plain idiotic. How I wish ESPN had never came into existence 30 years ago…
Quarterback’s should be judged on: 1.) How often his offense gets into end zones, which would include his number of TD passes; 2.) How well he protects the football; 3.) How often he’s available to play and not collecting his obscene paycheck nursing an injury on the sidelines…
Quarterbacks have NOTHING to do with a their own team’s defense, special teams or coaching, all of which are important components to the Ultimate Team Sport’s success or failure.

You parrots keep spouting off that Eli has this incredible defense. What team are you watching? It’s like you just keep replaying the SB 42 DLine over and over again. Eli and his young receivers carried a Swiss cheese defense and a last place run game all through 2011-12 and straight into SB 46. The only leader they have left on that D is Antrel Rolle.

I’ve been following Eli Manning’s career much more closely because the guy has become one of my all time favorite QB’s. It’s ignorant the level detractors will go to discount Eli Manning’s achievements.

Tiki is clinging to Eli as his only hope to get back into the good graces of Giants fans. It’s cringe worthy tbh. But if you gotta cling, you might as well cling to the future HOFer absolutely loved by the fan base, I guess. Coughlin won’t give Tiki the time of day.

  66. gmen1983 says: Jul 18, 2013 10:37 AM

First of all, obviously I’m a Giant fan, but Eli is not better than his brother. If I had to take one in a tight game, with 2 minutes left, I’d take Eli, but in basically every other scenario, Peyton is superior. Also, Tiki is not to be taken seriously. He obviously will say anything, evidenced by his saying Eli is on the verge on top-5 all-time. I love Eli and I’m glad he’s our QB, probably the best in Giant history or on that trajectory, but he’s not top-5 or even top-10 all-time. In no particular order, Peyton, Brady, Marino, Elway, Montana, Unitas, Young, Staubach, and I’m sure historians would name older players, such as Otto Graham, well ahead of him. That’s just off the top of my head. I know I missed some. He’s very good. Maybe a HOFer if he stays on this path, but not top-5 or 10.

  67. edisbetterthantroy says: Jul 18, 2013 10:38 AM

The Giants have made the playoffs 5 of Eli’s 9 seasons. Meaning, he makes the playoffs every other year. I suppose leading your team to the dance annually (like Peyton) isn’t important? All the critics need to make a decision and stand by it. What’s more important? Numbers or wins?

Of course, I’m a Ravens guy and I apologize for bringing this up, but I feel like it’s a strong way to support my opinion. But Joe Flacco doesn’t put up staggering regular season numbers. He’s efficient in the regular season, clutch in the 2:00 drill, wins in the playoffs and is a SB MVP. Does that make him top 5? Maybe, depending on who you talk to? Most critics will harp on Joe’s slightly above average regular season stats.

Back to the Mannings. This isn’t even close. Peyton is a sports icon who has the numbers and a championship to show. Remember folks, he’s not retired either.

Tiki flip flopping in the breeze again.

But I can see it now: Eli Manning wins 4 SB MVPs by the time he retires. He’s a lock as a first ballot HOFer. The pundits pontificate who their Top 5 All Time QBs are and they’ll rank Eli Manning at number 6.

    Pathetic but oh so true.

  70. granadafan says: Jul 18, 2013 11:01 AM

  71. bullcharger says: Jul 18, 2013 11:05 AM

Based on Playoff success, Eli has been better in the clutch. I specifically think he was great against SF in 2011. I don’t know if Peyton could have hung in there in a death match like that. He was far better in 2011 then he was in 2007 also. In 2007 it was more about defense. He’s gotten much better since then.

That said, he’s not Peyton manning. You have to have the numbers too. Eli isn’t nearly as consistent… he’s streaky.

As a Patriots fan they both drive me crazy, but I respect them for sure. Both great players.

Eli has won a lot more big gms and that’s what people remember, more than gaudy reg season stats. Eli, who’s 5 yrs younger, is 8-3 in the playoffs with 2 rings. Peyton is 9-11 with one. Eli has had better defenses, but that didn’t seem to slow Peyton down during those 14-2 reg seasons, with all those gms played inside or in good weather.. Peyton’s inexplicable playoff rec with some good teams says it all. I’m betting he doesn’t get it done in Denver either.

People who say great Giant defenses have carried Eli make me LOL. Seriously – look at the stats. The Giants defense hasn’t been good since that SB run back in ’07-’08. Eli has carried this team and single-handedly keeps us in contention.

Similarly, our O-line is horrible, despite the fact taht we gave up the least sacks last year. Eli just throws the ball away and makes adjustments better than other QBs can.

Regardless, Tiki is wrong.. Peyton Manning is still better than Eli (and I’m a Giants fan). I only take Eli over him when the game is on the line since he is a proven winner under intense pressure.. unlike Peyton. He should not have been the MVP of his Super Bowl – Dominic Rhodes was the true MVP.

I am as big of a Giants fans as anyone but Tiki is stoned if he actually believes that. Eli is a great QB but Peyton is in a class by himself. IMHO, Peyton is not only the best QB in the game today, he and Montana (and I give special mention to Roger Staubach, Bert Jones and Ken Anderson) are the best QB’s of the modern era. Having Peyton at QB is like having a coach under center. He is always gathering information asking players and especially coaches why they used certain plays/formations in certain situations, etc. He is simply one of the smartest QB’s to plat the game, if not the smartest QB ever.

Ok bashers…we get it…you hate tiki. Now that’s established, why not try firing up those little brains of yours to respond to the actual argument.

Let me throw this out there. PM is great but he played in a terrible division his entire career which usually gave them a bye. His only real competition was Brady and he only got through him twice. Eli has regular season warts but he’s money on the road in the playoffs. Does anyone think PM beats GB in -24 or SF and that defense in the rain?

I’ll take PM to get me there and EM once we are there.

  90. channer81 says: Jul 18, 2013 12:02 PM

Peyton had no running game? He had Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James. Your gonna compare Tiki, Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw to those two? Everyone will take Peyton over Eli because he was consistent, gave you 12+ wins every year and you’ll take your chances in the playoffs even though Peyton rarely came through while Eli did more with fewer opportunities. People forget Peyton took 5 years to win a playoff game while Eli had won a ring in his 4th. Also Peyton has lost to the likes of Jay Fiedler, Chad Pennington and Mark Sanchez in the postseason.

Peyton will still get the nod because fans like consistency, and in the NFL where it’s pretty hard to accomplish that year to year, he embodied that and made life easy for his fans. Eli on the other hand has had the more up n down career based on wins. But face it, come postseason time who are you more scared to take on? Eli has so many big wins in the post season ON THE ROAD, can you name a big road playoff win by Peyton besides B-More in ’06? Eli has probably 4 of them.

If you could have it your way, you’d take Peyton during the regular season and sub in Eli for the postseason.

There was a great article in ESPN the Magazine a few years ago.. The reason the Mannings workout at duke in the offseason is that the coach there was Peyton’s OC at Tennessee and Eli’s coach at Ole Miss. They workout with him and do film study in the offseason every year. The ESPN article went over the coach describing how he could sit both the Manning boys down separately and go over the same game tapes and they could break it down identically. They have studied and trained together for so many years that mentally they are on the same page with scheme, coverage, breaking down defenses and making adjustments. They both are required to operate within their offensive systems and to their teams ability. But based on their pure football knowledge, he paints the picture that they are on equal footing and every offseason they are coaching each other up on what they each saw and learned the previous season. One reason they are both so very very good.. I have a feeling that a Manning Bro’s film study session could likely put many coaches to shame..

  101. lionsforlife313 says: Jul 18, 2013 12:42 PM

Peyton is not only 100 times better than Eli, but Peyton Manning is the best QB of all time, it doesn’t matter if Eli wins three more rings and Peyton wins zero, Peyton can beat a team before the ball is even snapped, Eli is maybe a top ten QB in todays league, and will never be in the top five all time.

  102. jimjets says: Jul 18, 2013 12:44 PM

Everyone here knows what a complete tool Tiki Barber is, but you have to admit, once Coughlin taught him how to hold on to the ball he was great.

He’s right on this one – I would take Eli over Peyton anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Here’s a partial list of QB’s who have won the same amount of SB’s as PM

Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Jay Schroeder, Joe Flacco, Joe Namath…

point being, when you’ve won as many divisions as Peyton, you gotta do better in the playoffs and win more than once.

My own goofball Mark Sanchez beat him in the playoffs – fair and square.

  103. norwegianwud says: Jul 18, 2013 12:49 PM

This is coming from a loyal NYG fan, Tiki why do you think your opinion matters on someone you called “comical” when asked how he was as a leader. You talked crap about Tom Coughlin, then what happened when you retired? Oh yeah we won 2 Super Bowls in 5 years. Why do you insist to stay relevant? You put yourself in the NYG doghouse, now all of a sudden you want to defend Michael Strahan as if he needed you of all ppl to defend him, and you want to call Eli a top 5 of all time qb? Wow, you must be doing to become relevant. I love Eli to death, and he may be a better post-season qb then his brother, but you put their regular season numbers next to each other and Peyton hands down is a thousand times better. Yes Eli is clutch in the 4th qtr, but in the first 3 qtrs are punter see’s the field more than anyone else, lol. Tiki, just go away already. U will never have our respect back, and u will be forever boo’ed and ridiculed by us Giants fans. You gave up on us, then we succeeded after you made fun of our leaders. Nuff said

  105. northstarnic says: Jul 18, 2013 12:51 PM

So is it safe to say that tiki had surpassed his brother in the being an idiot category? Eli better than Peyton is absurd.

  106. justintuckrule says: Jul 18, 2013 12:53 PM

@truthfactory – Thank you for making good PM arguments. The “defense won it” argument is admittedly tough to overcome. Let me try….

SB42 – NE’s defense was ranked 4th in 2007 and Giants were ranked 17th. If you are going to argue that Giants defense held Brady then you have to also admit that Eli outscored a tougher defense. You can’t have it one way.

SB46 – Giants’ defense held Brady to 17. However, to be fair, Giants’ offense time of possession was 37 minutes to 22. Keeping Brady off the field and sustaining long drives is a reflection on Eli…not really on the defense holding Brady.

  107. peterweb2 says: Jul 18, 2013 12:57 PM

lets be honest, if John fox had not tryed to play things safe peyton manning would have been the one holding that lombardi and not ray lewis. also these discussions would not even be happening because if peyton had 2 rings I don’t think anyone would then doubt the better player. Peyton manning is clearly the better qb, eli just gets more praise because he plays in new york. not saying eli is bad he just is not as good as peyton and I doubt he will ever get another ring. actually his team will probably suck this year.

  108. baltimoresnativeson says: Jul 18, 2013 1:00 PM

I agree, Eli is an all weather quarterback like Ben, Rogers, and Flacco. Peyton struggles in adverse playoff conditions like Brees, and Ryan. Peyton has all the stats, but I would take Eli 1st.

  109. justintuckrule says: Jul 18, 2013 1:09 PM

One last thing on sb46. That game was en route to a giants blow out until wilfork admittedly flopped and drew a 1st down overturning holding penalty on 3rd down. Giants were cruising to that point and were primed to take a 16-0 lead. Heads were down on ne sidelines. There was no comeback in them and they were all replaying sb42 in their minds.

  118. voiceofsweetness says: Jul 18, 2013 2:02 PM

One of the big reasons Eli has so many clutch moments is because he played awful for 3 1/2 quarters and his team is trying to hang on or comeback when they should be destroying teams.

Not so simple. Look back at those seasons…
Without that Giant Defense, the team doesn’t even make It to the playoff’s. Eli Manning’s contribution to those Super bowl winning years was very minor. He had a great team built around him, a very good team. In no way is Eli better than his brother Peyton, no way.

If I was building a team, It would be Peyton over Eli every time. Peyton has never had the level of talent built around him like his brother has. Barber is off his rocker.

  120. shirsc2 says: Jul 18, 2013 2:11 PM

Took Peyton multiple attempts to beat Brady in the playoffs. Eli has beaten him both times in the Superbowl.

Yes the defense played well in both Superbowls but when Eli got the ball back for the last drive, they were losing. Peyton got the ball back late in Superbowl vs Saints and threw the game ending INT.

When it comes to clutch play, Eli is better. Overall QB, i still give it to Peyton.

Ok as a gmen fan I can say this. He has two rings BUT lets face it NY wanted to run this guy out of town his first 3 years. He has the most interceptions the last 5 years in the NFL.
He at times is skidish (GM’s quote) but never gets hurt. A david Tyree helmet catch and a sell your soul to the devil signing of Plax saved his career early on. He has never won a playoff game outside of the two big runs and is a above average QB. I would take older brother in a Manhatten minute.. Go GMEN!!

  124. kev86 says: Jul 18, 2013 6:14 PM

  125. pologroundsvet says: Jul 18, 2013 6:39 PM

Give it up, Tiki. You burned all the bridges a long time ago. You’re in the Ring of Honor – and as a football player you deserve to be – but no Giants fan wants to hear from you. Loyalty counts – especially to the guy who taught you how to hold onto the ball so you could get to the Ring of Honor.

  126. edithpiaf51 says: Jul 18, 2013 7:36 PM

First of all, I am both a Bronco and a Giant fan and I have to sa Peyton is on his way out. Eli is elite and in his prime. If Peyton did not go to Germany to get stem cells in his neck, he would not be playing in the NFL anymore.

    Also here are some facts;
Peyton Manning played in a division that was really bad for many years and he has been knocked out of the playoffs 8 times in the first round. Tim Tebow won more playoff games for the Broncos than Peyton
    Peyton’s IQ is 115, Eli’s IQ is 135.
Peyton manning has had the best regular season record several times and has only one championship with Indy and none with Broncos where he choked against the Ravens.
Eli does not choke. Also Eli had tougher divisions than Peyton, and Eli had less talent around him than Peyton. Eli also was there in the clutch because he is a thinker with a high IQ.
The only reasons Eli struggled in 2012 were due to extraneous circumstances like personal issues he endured because of Hurricane Sandy. If not for that, he would have been the great Eli he always has been. In addition, Eli is far a better person than Peyton. Eli is a selfless, kind, generous person that gives back to his community and puts others before himself. If there were more Elis in this world, we would have world peace.

  127. vibesid says: Jul 18, 2013 10:01 PM

Peyton is 9-11 in the playoffs in 15 years in the NFL. Joe Flacco has also won 9 playoff games in his 5 years in the NFL. So, Peyton must not be that great if it took him 15 years to accomplish what Flacco accomplished in just 5 years.

  128. The Prophet says: Jul 19, 2013 7:21 AM

While having Tiki Barber endorse you generally works against you, debating Eli vs. Peyton is a legitimate debate, since their biggest strengths are so different. Eli has been magnificent in the playoffs and inconsistent in the regular season, while Peyton is garbage in the postseason but one of the most consistent regular season QB’s ever.

If you could start Peyton for the first 16, then bench him for Eli in the playoffs imagine the SB dynasty you’d have on your hands!

Asante Samuel dropped the interception ECry threw that would have iced the win for the Patriots the first time, and Wes Welker dropped the pass that would have allowed the Pats to kill another couple minutes of clock and put up at least another FG. ECry is extremely fortunate.

What happened???? a Pick 6, and an INT in OT, So that is 10 pts Peyton Gave up. So Let’s see Eli, Wins with 17 and 21 But doesnt give up Pick 6′s and INT’s in FG range, He Also throws it to Manningham, and Tyree in biggest gamechanging moments. Peyton play in weakest Division Yr in Yr out, Top Offense Yr in, Yr out, No Injuries, 13 Probowlers, Yr in Yr Out, was going for 16-0 but finished 15-1 bcuz coach sat his starters Vs the Jets, and all that and Peyton only has 1 Ring and U say Eli’s D was better????? Even tho Eli has Record for most Passing Yards in single Postseason, Even tho Eli had to come from behind in both SB’s ???? I mean if his Defense was 2000 B-more he would have won 35-3 cuz Defense would keep getting him the Ball. Nope He was down 14-10, needed a TD, and he was down 19-15 needing a TD in 4th quarter of Both games against the Best QB ((MVP)) Brady, and The Best Defensive coach Bill Belichik ((Belichik D)) twice.
