Bucs disclosed Wright arrest to 49ers

Detroit Lions v Green Bay Packers Getty Images

When it came to the question of whether the 49ers knew that newly-acquired cornerback Eric Wright had recently been arrested, the team’s “due diligence” didn’t require much diligence.

Per a league source with knowledge of the discussions, the Buccaneers disclosed the July 12 arrest for suspicion of DUI during trade talks with the 49ers.

From Tampa’s perspective, it was the right thing to do.  From the 49ers’ perspective, the organization fairly can be criticized for bringing into the community someone who possibly will cause mayhem on the highways.

On that point, Seahawks fans likely will have a field day, given 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s recent comments regarding the rash of PED violations in Seattle.  Though drinking and driving doesn’t constitute cheating in a football sense, Harbaugh has opened the door to charges that he was throwing stones from the front porch of a glass house.

Yes I can really see why this needed 3 different articles instead if a simple update in one.

I like the way the culture’s changing down here. Bucs gave him a 2nd chance with the reduced salary and he let them down again. A conditional pick isn’t bad for a guy they were likely gonna release anyway. Schiano’s cleaned house of nearly all the guys with character concerns. Wright, Talib, Tanard Jackson and Winslow were all shown the door and it’s gone a long way with restoring the goodwill of the fan base.

Have you seen the college and pro rap sheet on Wright? Holy cow, exactly what are the Niners trying to prove? That they can go hoodlum to hoodlum with Belichick?

    First step to Loserville.

  4. Laura says: Jul 19, 2013 11:21 PM

Seriously, have you *no* pictures of Eric in a Buccaneer uniform? Since that’s relevant to your story? I mean, all I had to do was run “eric wright” and buccaneers in Google Images and I pulled up a ton.

  5. rainponcho87 says: Jul 19, 2013 11:22 PM

Saying Harbaugh is “throwing stones from a glass house” is a stretch. He was commenting on the issue of PEDs specifically. Saying how if you have cheated to win, you have already lost. Off field substance abuse problems have nothing to do with that. You can criticize the 49ers for not taking a stand against that, but geeze have an ounce of journalistic credibility but not trying to say that a DUI somehow is the same thing as taking PEDS. Both are bad but in different ways.

DUI and Suspended for P.E.D’s in 2012 lol

  7. lks311 says: Jul 19, 2013 11:24 PM

Seriously. The only photo you can find of Wright is from his ONE season with the Lions? I mean, seriously?

  8. moss49thteam says: Jul 19, 2013 11:30 PM

Does a player know if he is being actively shopped around the league? Is that the job of the agent?

Who is responsible for trade disclosures regarding the player? It always seems to default back to “Team Security” however the GM, Owner, Coaches, and NFL front office all seem to be involved.

Also this trade that involves Eric Wright involves only three parties. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the San Fransisco 49ers, and the NFL Front office. (because they have to approve all transactions) So why is Eric Wright pictured here in a Detroit Lions uniform?

  9. rviderklvn says: Jul 19, 2013 11:39 PM

lol all the nfc west members were making fun of the trade because PEDS and DUI at (shoot gap . com) Personally I thought it was smart, stack up on cbs plus they have so many picks to use its one step close to RevengeTour’13

I love how the NFL makes a big deal about players getting arrested just so they can act like they are damaged goods and pay them alot less. You can drink 1 beer and get a dui. Its such bs.

  12. skinsfan91 says: Jul 19, 2013 11:49 PM

Redskins wouldn’t have signed him. High character all day.

  13. myosin10 says: Jul 19, 2013 11:51 PM

Niners are giving a guy a chance who made a mistake in life. Seattle endorses its players to cheat using PEDs to try and excel in the NFL. Seachickens r dope fiends.

  14. bennyb82 says: Jul 20, 2013 12:00 AM

I wonder how many times agents defend their troubled client in a trade offer by saying…”…C’mon it was a DUI…it’s not like he is out killing people!”

  15. shadowcell says: Jul 20, 2013 12:13 AM

‘cuz there’s nothing the rest of us love more than Seahawks and 49ers fans flinging turds at each other

  16. faithful209er says: Jul 20, 2013 12:21 AM

Turn the guy into a winner, treat him like a winner, and hopefully the young man starts acting like a winner.

Wright has been caught with PED’s though.

  18. sc49ers says: Jul 20, 2013 12:59 AM

Better off to get caught drinking then to Get caught cheating the nfl. If you have to cheat on ped..your not that good its been proven the ones who do always fall apart no 49ers need to cheat there all solid players.,,seahawk land different story lol……

  19. rajbais says: Jul 20, 2013 1:10 AM

Even if so I wouldn’t be surprised if Wright’s ex-head coach Eric Mangini was behind the trade.

Weirdly enough Wright’s issues came after Mangini left Cleveland.

  20. gochargersgo says: Jul 20, 2013 1:28 AM

Patriots catch unbelievable crap for not cutting one of their own after getting in trouble, but the 49ers receive barely any criticism for going out of their way and trading for a guy who has a pretty extensive criminal history? This site is overrun with trolls.

  21. olyhawk says: Jul 20, 2013 1:48 AM

The comment Harbaugh made about the seahawks P.E.D. issues was only to stir the sh*t pot boys. He wouldn’t have allowed ballke to make is deal if he was so troubled about the issue. Wright is a PED offender, dui, and a rap sheet.

Every locker room is a mix of law abiding citizens and outlaws. The unity between the two is the only thing that matters.

    I’m ready for some football.

Two faced Harblow can go suck eggs!

    #GO HAWKS!!!!

  23. mrpolarbear99 says: Jul 20, 2013 2:11 AM

Seems similar to the Brandon Jacobs signing, kind of puzzling as they already have a pile of corners, why add another with baggage? I bet he never plays a snap for the 49ers.

  24. Dusty Grey says: Jul 20, 2013 2:11 AM

    @rainponcho87

Wright is coming off a suspension in 2012 for PEDs. Trading for a guy who’s season ended because of PEDs is a pretty big stone.

  25. southpaw79 says: Jul 20, 2013 2:49 AM

Seahawks fans will have a field day until they remember Lynch’s DUI(s) and Sherman claiming that half the league uses PED’s. I guess that means the Niners had a 50/50 shot at getting someone who uses PEDs. I also do not see how any of Wright’s previous actions has resulted in the Niners cheating to win?

  26. rukkus1 says: Jul 20, 2013 3:02 AM

Only comment is that his PED use was last season… they traded for him this season. So harbough is getting the exact type of player he was ripping a whole team for…

But in all fairness to all teams and fans out there, this stuff happens with alot of players on most teams.

The hawks were highly criticized by the public and media. It doesnt have to continue on with other teams. It happens. Players get punished. The rest of us need to just move on from it.

Harbough does look a little silly now, but who cares… its almost football season.

    Go Hawks!

Just imagine if you were a hawk fan and it seemed like this was on tv and websites every day cuz it was kindve taken to the next level with our squad

  28. bigguy54 says: Jul 20, 2013 3:20 AM

rainponcho87 Wright has a PED suspension in 2012, and now a DUI, so he has the double whammy I guess. I have not looked at his other exploits, but it sounds like he knows the back seat of a cruiser well.

  29. joetoronto says: Jul 20, 2013 3:44 AM

Hats off to the Bucs, if only ALL teams flushed their turds.

  30. sfm073 says: Jul 20, 2013 3:54 AM

Good people doesn’t mean they are good players. Just ask the rams of a few years ago. As I said with the patriots, teams shouldn’t care if a young talented player gets in a little bit of trouble. There is almost zero consequences against it.

  31. norcalmafia says: Jul 20, 2013 4:12 AM

Who cares about what Seahawks fans have to say about the NIners..They say its been forever since weve won a superbowl ?? Uh when have you guys won anything?Youre comparing an expansion franchise that has not acomplished anything to one of the most popular teams on the planet..ok guys..

  32. seainstructor says: Jul 20, 2013 5:23 AM

This is the absolute end of the forty whiners whining abut the seahawks adderal usage. The Hawks may have hired kids that LATER were caught using inappropriate substance. . Harbaugh HIRED a known and confirmed user. End of argument!

  33. aldavis4president says: Jul 20, 2013 5:58 AM

ahahah..9ers are the new patriots…w.o the recent championships**. The media will defend all of their moves. Erick wright can ball no doubt, but he’s a knucklehead. It isn’t his 1st arrest. And why is he in a lion uniform??! As a Raider fan I feel your pain DET! Lol.

  34. kev86 says: Jul 20, 2013 7:00 AM

    Stay classy Frisco.

  35. sportsmeccabi says: Jul 20, 2013 7:11 AM

If getting burnt was a crime punishable by some time in prison, then Eric Wright would be spending the rest of his life behind bars.

  36. haywoodjablomee says: Jul 20, 2013 8:00 AM

Moral of the story: Commit a crime and get traded to a Super Bowl contender.

  37. randolph32 says: Jul 20, 2013 8:03 AM

Why? Because Detroit hasn’t had any press recently and Mike was trying to help them out….Doh!

  38. drfeelyouup says: Jul 20, 2013 8:16 AM

Did they disclose how he can’t cover or tackle?

  39. harrisonhits2 says: Jul 20, 2013 10:00 AM

This country has become so ridiculously zero tolerance. We are human beings not robots or computers. And guess what, most human beings make mistakes all their lives. Especially when we’re young.

We can only hope the mistakes we make are small ones but we all make them.

That said, any nfl player who gets a DUI is a moron. They have resources a normal person does not. Whether its the funds to get a limo or town car to drive you around for the night, or being able to call a number that will send someone to get you no questions asked. They have no need to place themselves in this situation.

  40. osiris33 says: Jul 20, 2013 11:01 AM

Actually, Seahawks fans won’t have much to say at all, because we know how much better we are than the 49ers. The Rams are a far bigger threat to us than the aging, sagging niners that we rolled over so easily.

  41. bigbensrapebaby says: Jul 20, 2013 12:15 PM

What a shock the 4whinners picked up another POS Seems like he fits the “niner way”….The last game I watched in sanfrancisco was a fresh reminder that their fan base is a bunch of drunken hooligans looking for trouble.I don’t think I have ever been involved in more fights and arguments and yes it’s plural while trying to watch a football. Stay drunk and swerving San Francisco

  42. niner13 says: Jul 20, 2013 1:05 PM

Don’t you guys get yet? Harbaugh (and I) don’t give a flying fig what you think or write. Now amuse yourselves with your right hands.

  43. thesportgenius says: Jul 20, 2013 2:02 PM

SF is a great city that is uber tolerant so having a few boys that party on the squad is not a problem. Simply teach them to call a limo. Seattle on the other hand is known as Suicide City USA. I’d want to kill myself too if my team never won anything…ever.

  44. themackstrong says: Jul 20, 2013 2:25 PM

Little Jimmy came out and tried to question other teams character. Looking at his current roster, he has 3 sexual offenders and linebacker who recently bottled his teammate for stopping him from drinking and driving. Stay Classy San Fran!

  45. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jul 20, 2013 3:07 PM

Ufortunately the sources of this author are anonymous and a little weak as usual. So let’s wait to hear if the 49ers really were told anything about his past by the Bucs.

  46. dans761 says: Jul 21, 2013 11:36 PM

Look at all the WHINER fans make excuses! Did someone just say Seahawks endorse cheating?!? Then another guy says he was just commenting about PED’s, he wasnt taking shots at the Seahawks? REALLY?! LOL, when you’re up against brain dead idiots like this, there’s no reasoning! Excuses excuses excuses! Double standards, double standards, double standards! Whiner fans are HYPOCRITES if they cheer Harbums comments, then say signing Eric Wright is unrelated. You WHINER fans are hilarious!
