When it came to the question of whether the 49ers knew that newly-acquired cornerback Eric Wright had recently been arrested, the team’s “due diligence” didn’t require much diligence.

Per a league source with knowledge of the discussions, the Buccaneers disclosed the July 12 arrest for suspicion of DUI during trade talks with the 49ers.

From Tampa’s perspective, it was the right thing to do. From the 49ers’ perspective, the organization fairly can be criticized for bringing into the community someone who possibly will cause mayhem on the highways.

On that point, Seahawks fans likely will have a field day, given 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s recent comments regarding the rash of PED violations in Seattle. Though drinking and driving doesn’t constitute cheating in a football sense, Harbaugh has opened the door to charges that he was throwing stones from the front porch of a glass house.
