Defense: Mike Adams’ version of stabbing changed

Mike Adams, David DeCastro AP

Some details changed when Steelers tackle Mike Adams testified at a preliminary hearing for the three men charged with stabbing and carjacking him, and defense lawyers were ready to pounce on those inconsistencies.

Adams was stabbed in the abdomen in June in an alleged robbery attempt, suffering a lacerated colon. He told police officers then that he was leaving a restaurant when three men approached, one pulling a gun and demanding the keys to his truck, another punching him and another stabbing him.

According to Liz Navratil of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the version told in court Thursday was slightly different.

Adams said he spent three hours at the Local Bar & Kitchen, had two drinks, and left to walk to a nearby Jimmy John’s for a sandwich. He said he was approached by the three men after he sat in his truck and ate the sandwich, and some other details of the incident were different than the original report, including that one man showed a gun but never raised it higher than his hip.

Defense attorneys asked Adams how much he had to drink, and after several questions, senior district judge Edward Tibbs said: “It doesn’t matter if he was a drunk on the street and stabbed, . . . it doesn’t matter.”

“The story Mr. Adams told today is inaccurate,” said defense lawyer Randall McKinney. “Mr. Adams did instigate.”

The three men arrested — Jerrell Whitlock, Dquay Means and Michael Paranay — will stand trial for attempted homicide, conspiracy to steal a vehicle and other crimes when the case goes to trial.

    Rubbish

3 hours and only 2 drinks? Main that’s a big cup.

  3. bestbitter says: Jul 19, 2013 7:40 AM

Wait, so if Adams instigated, that would make the ‘attempted homicide, conspiracy to steal a vehicle and other crimes’ excusable? Doubtful. Reaching defense is reaching.

Mike Adams is 6’7″, 320+. Even if I’m with 2 of my friends, one has a gun and the other a knife, I’m STILL not approaching this dude.

  5. jagwires says: Jul 19, 2013 8:13 AM

Scumbag lawyers. Was he stabbed or not? If he was, someone needs to pay. That simple. I don’t care if he instigated, I don’t care if he was drunk, neither of those are illegal. Stabbing someone however, IS.

Lawyers will do anything to make a buck.

  6. crownofthehelmet says: Jul 19, 2013 8:27 AM

For help he should of just called Jimmy John’s and ordered a knuckle sandwich. Speedy fast, problem solved.

I know the defense has to jump on the inconsistencies, but your brain rewrites memories all of the time.

I hope this guy isn’t full of crap. I want to believe that some NFL players are decent human beings.

  9. thraiderskin says: Jul 19, 2013 9:00 AM

So is the defense implying Adams phyically assaulted(instigated) the three men? If not, how does it matter whether he instigated a confrontation where one of the men used a deadly weapon on him? Please tell me its because of a “your momma” joke.

  10. zn0rseman says: Jul 19, 2013 9:20 AM

Mike Adams is white-black who is clearly a racist and profiled the three men who attacked him because they were black. He’s guilty of his own stabbing. Eric Holder should file civil rights charges. Obama should go on TV stating that if he had a son, he would look like Jerrell Whitlock, Dquay Means and Michael Paranay. The federal government should use 1.6 million dollars in tax payer money to fund protests led by Al Sharpton to generate of fake outrage. A special prosecuter should be name to file charges against Adams with no evidence of any kind to support the charges. When those charges eventually fall through in court, there should rioting.

If his story matches word for word then you know it was a lie, because it was memorized and rehearsed. When he gave his first statement he was probably in shock and medicated. After thinking about what happened he probably remembers better now. Either way he was the one stabbed and it was 3 on one. He wasn’t trying to steal his own truck either. Scumbags.

i am a ravens fan who sincerely hopes adams has a full recovery and is able to resume his career. this post is for one steeler fan and he knows who he is. so if adams lied to the police should he be kicked off the team? if he supplied a false version of the facts are you going to insist on his removal?

  14. crownofthenofool says: Jul 19, 2013 11:18 AM

Doesn’t add up. 2 drinks in 3 hours in a bar. Yeah right.

A bunch of guys approach someone this big. Yeah right. Unless he was so drunk they thought they had a chance. In which case it makes sense he got the munchies but I wonder why he was driving.

The truth is coming out. This team is a mess. Where is the leadership? Who’s running this asylum?

Nah, but Iam sure this falls way short of obstruction of justice by destroying evidence. But how was I to know Adams went to the Ray Lewis school of criminal ethics. Keep trying scoobie until there are two dead men Ray is still a couple ahead and always will be.

@crownofthenofoll: You are a waste of life. Go get a gun and kill yourself. Hopefully you have procreated yet. If so I feel sorry for your kids. 3 against one when armed with a gun and knife makes idiots get bigger balls. I’m sure your wimpy ass has never even had enough strength to hold up a handgun so you would have no idea the power holding a gun can give you.

You’re sure? But of course. He’s a Steeler! The fact is, no one knows what happened except the people who were there. You definitely have NO idea what happened to Adams or Ray Lewis or Jimmy Hoffa, so hush up, Deputy Fife, and resume your lifelong quest for the white suit.

  18. scoobies05 says: Jul 19, 2013 12:26 PM

you know it still amazes me that a man of your intelect still refuses to accept the simple facts that no one was murdered that night. the men who died were felons who attacked a group of men with a champagne bottle and who were killed by other men defending themselves. these are facts presented by witnesses. and in the trial in which the men accused of murder were aquitted, ray lewis was a witness. so the state thought he was the killer yet asked him to testify against the other people accused? now james harrison sets dogs against kids but you dont speak out against that. you definitely are a homer who makes his rules up as it fits what you are trying to accomplish. very sad. and again…best wishes to adams.

Ah pot meet kettle. While you like to think that you are all knowing and wise you in fact know no more about these incidents than I. However you chose to believe what makes your hero tolerable enough to justify your worship. I find you pathetic lacking ethics, morals, and quite innocent to the ways of the world. You live in an area where people beat up innocents as the result of a court case that didn’t involve them. To you that is ok but to me it a sign of a very sick populace so your attitudes are reflective of your environment…..you have my pity.

  20. scoobies05 says: Jul 19, 2013 1:12 PM

actually nofool….wrong again. the police ruled that that had nothing to do with trayvon martin. and while yes, baltimore does have its issues are you trying to tell us that adams got stabbed somewhere else?

  21. cfeeley52 says: Jul 19, 2013 1:40 PM

    @nofool
So you chose to believe roethlisberger didn’t rape anyone so you could continue to worship him… Whenever i bring up roethlisberger you seem to ignore it and choose instead to cast aspersions at ray lewis. You’re one of the biggest hypocrites I’ve ever come across. I too find your lack of morals quite pathetic…

  22. crownofthehelmet says: Jul 19, 2013 1:40 PM

scoobie, you’re asking nofool to accept simple facts, but then make a comment like “JH sets dogs against kids”. Not saying he’s a saint, but we all know that is not how it went down.

My shepherd has hopped my fence plenty of times – not once did I set him out to do that.

Sure, must have been Atlanta sight of another stabbing as I remember…do you?

Holy crap! Adams instigated a carjacking? Wow this is a new low for the Steelers and the black community in general! ….. This is the weakest defense since the 1999 Bengals

I think the Steelers are going to have to look at what kind of depth they have at tackle. With all these allegations swirling around, Adams is going to have to sit out until the investigation is concluded and he is fully cleared — that is, if he’s physically able to play. Wish him a speedy recovery and hope he doesn’t miss too many games but, as Nofool has said repeatedly, even when one is simply accused, there is a general suspicion of misconduct, or an allegation that someone involved in a crime has not been completely truthful with police, the player must be cut and the fans are not allowed to support him unless they have no moral compass and are completely lacking in ethics.

  26. scoobies05 says: Jul 19, 2013 3:22 PM

i do realize that crown. just showing nofool what its like to just read headlines and not actually follow up to learn facts. for the record i dont claim for ray to be a saint. but i do know that he isnt guilty of what nofool claims he is

he lied to police, destroyed evidence in a murder trial and has six kids with four different women….so what are you trying to convince me he isn’t….. Oh you are trying to convince me he is an honorable man…I know what the facts are with the evidence available that was not destroyed.

you fellas need to get a life…my goodness…reading these messages you fellas post is hilarious, like watching the real housewives shows on tv…the bottom line is both of your teams have had some bad guys over the years, yet we all overlook their shortcomings when they perform on the field…have fun with all you have going on…

  32. scoobies05 says: Jul 19, 2013 7:06 PM

i sure hope you reserve the same judgements for any steeler player who has children out of wedlock. and if you know what the evidence is then you would know that he was in no way involved with any one being murdered…because no one was murdered. what ray lewis is is a man who has made mistakes. unlike some of your steeler legends, after his encounter in atlanta he has no further legal run ins. read mclovins post…thats pretty much my point. and im sure you have no skeletons in your closet , do you

I can see how Adams instigated and how the 3 guys felt justified. That’s probably why all 3 ran, intentionally dropped a cell(so they could get caught), & one of which jumped state lines with his girlfriend and child to hide out in a hotel, then tried to run and leave them when the police tracked them down. Totally sounds like those guys are innocent to me….

Hmmmmmmmm let’s see here, you’re at a bar and kitchen for hours only have a couple drinks and THEN decides to go to Jimmy John’s to get something to eat. There is more to this. I’m guessing a drug deal gone wrong.
