Trainer: Upshaw’s in better shape now

AP

Ravens linebacker Courtney Upshaw was noticeably heavier this offseason, pushing 300 pounds, and coach John Harbaugh was willing to call him out on it.

But according to the personal trainer he’s been working with this summer, Upshaw’s going to look like a new man when Harbaugh sees him at training camp.

Upshaw’s apparently in the 275 range now, closer to where he needs to be to be a productive player.

“Courtney has been very consistent and has dropped about 20 pounds from 295 pounds and has been fluctuating between 275 pounds to 278 pounds,” trainer Troy Jones told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. “He’s been very dedicated. He has a great work ethic, he works extremely hard. He’s a quiet guy. When Courtney makes up his mind, he doesn’t hesitate. He’ll pass the conditioning test. Courtney is very explosive.”

The fact that Harbaugh was willing to point out that the second-year linebacker was overweight because of his poor eating habits was a clear message.

If Upshaw has taken it to heart and keeps the weight off, it will give the Ravens another potential playmaker at linebacker, which they need as they make a transition.

  1. I can see the Ravens players didn’t let that SB win affect their motivation at all.

Seems like 1/2 the team got overweight and outta shape this offseason. The other 1/2 was either sleeping off a hangover or getting arrested.

  2. Can’t wait for him to drill Roethlisbooger into that pee stained turf at Heinz Field as the ball lightly bounces backwards across the goal.

  3. i will give you upshaw and ngata…reporting in shape seems to be an issue. but please crown..tell me what ravens were arrested. and how is it you are first

  4. “He has a great work ethic.” Wonder what the Vegas odds were on the above sentence EVER being uttered referencing this load?!

  5. I hope upshaw can stay in shape. He looked pretty good last year at times, and made some clutch plays. I still think he could afford to drop some lbs, and play around 260-265.

  6. yeah, Rolando McClain (no longer on the team), Ngata and Upshaw do represent half the team. Certainly, they were the key players in the SB win, i mean they considered a dual SB MVP for Ngata and Upshaw, right?

    Knowledge, son.

    Rolando McClain.

Right, so the Ravens apparently have a roster of 2 since Upshaw was overweight and McClain got arrested.

I am very proud of you for at least admitting the Ravens won the Supr Bowl though. Keep taking those baby steps and before you know it? You will no longer be a troll.

  8. Upshaw is a bust. They drafted him to be a pass rusher and a year later felt the need to get Dumervil. I bet they switch him inside to try to get something out of him.

  9. Upshaw got heavy, but training camp hasn’t even started yet, and he’s back to his playing weight from last season.

Upshaw was ranked as the #2 OLB against the run last season (which is what he was drafted for…replacing Jarrett Johnson). Quote from ProFootballFocus: “Courtney Upshaw has been a Jarrett Johnson-esque wall in contain on the edge.”

He and Paul Kruger made for a nice rotation, and Baltimore has upgraded over Kruger by adding Elvis Dumervil.

  10. nice one @rockthered but crown makes up facts to suit his trolling

Upshaw is currently penciled in as backup for “Doom”. With him, McClellan, and McPhee plus the backups for the backups this is a fierce outside LB team. Perhaps the most exciting enhancement of the whole team.

  11. Scoobie asked me to name a Ravens player arrested this off-season, which I did. Never said he was integral to the SB, or even played in the game for that matter. But he was a member of the Baltimore Ravens at the time of his arrest, no disputing that.

Oh yeah – McKinnie, Cody and Pierce have also been reported as coming to camp heavy.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby nominate this comment for Dumbest Comment of the Month.

Are you seriously trying to say that a player entering his second year in the NFL is a bust? Upshaw isn’t Von Miller, but how in the world can you claim he’s a bust simply because the Ravens signed Dumervil? What team in their right mind who could afford Dumervil would pass up the chance to sign him? Are you not familiar with the adage of “you can’t have enough pass rushers”?

The Ravens may very well have Upshaw play some inside linebacker this year with Suggs and Dumervil primarily on the outside. That does not translate to Upshaw being a bust of a pass rusher. If anything, that would indicate Upshaw has some flexibility and durability in playing defense if he could effectively play both inside and outside linebacker, so your comment would be even dumber than it already is.

  13. to crown, i submit to you buffet ben and lamarr woodley(the hefty lb)
to big benowns….ben hasnt beaten the ravens sice 2010. and as crown pointed out yesterday, batch is gone so the steelers are in trouble

  14. “Oh yeah – McKinnie, Cody and Pierce have also been reported as coming to camp heavy.”

LOL, are we really arguing which teams backup players are fatter?

You named one player who was only officially part of the team for maybe two weeks when he was arrested. Your original comment claimed half the team had been arrested, and the other half was hungover from….something (I don’t even know what that’s supposed to mean anyway). So you either don’t know what you’re talking about, or you love to exaggerate things to the point of nonsense. Either way, you’re wrong.

Oh, and Pierce and McKinnie weren’t overweight either. McKinnie was overweight heading into training camp last year, not this year.

  16. Reports state Mckinnie is in his best shape in years, Pierce gained 10 lbs of muscle & Cody is coming off of surgery although he’s always fat. Just admit you misspoke and move on.

  17. The Ravens reloaded in the offseason, they’re younger, faster and deeper on defense, and the offense returns its core. The Ravens have the pieces to contend for the next 10 years.

  18. I hate to say thisd but, all my fellow Steeler fans fail to realize that Upshaw’s production in his rookie year was still better than our first round picks Ziggy Hood and Cam Heyward.

I’m tired of waiting for them to play well. Hood and Heyward need to step up in thier 3rd and 5th years or they will be kicked to the curb.
