Will Witherspoon returns to the Rams

Tennessee's Witherspoon and Sensabaugh celebrate a score during an NFL football game in Indianapolis Reuters

On Thursday morning, word out of St. Louis was that the Rams were nearing a deal with veteran linebacker Will Witherspoon.

There’s no extended wait in store for that deal to get done. Witherspoon tweeted late Thursday night that he was on his way back to St. Louis, where he played from 2006 to 2009, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the agreement is in place on a contract.

Witherspoon joins a linebacking corps that has James Laurinaitis, Jo-Lonn Dunbar and first-round pick Alec Ogletree pencilled into the starting lineup. Witherspoon is likely to spend training camp as insurance against injury or a slow transition to the NFL for Ogletree and will give the team their only experienced depth amid a sea of green options behind the starters.

Witherspoon played 14 games for the Titans last season, starting five times and winding up with 47 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown. It was the first time since his rookie season that Witherspoon wasn’t primarily a starter, which should make adjusting to a reserve role in St. Louis fairly easy.

Although I would have preferred for the Rams to find someway to bring Quentin Mikell back as safety is their most glaring need I’m still happy they added some depth at a position they have overall lacked in for years.

Good move for the Rams. Spoon is a versatile and can be the primary backup for all 3 spots.

Just an honest question. Why did the Rams let Mikell? With that aggressive blitzing defense he put up Pro Bowl numbers last year.

It was a salary cap move initially Mack. He was due to make 9 mil this year. His coverage skills were starting to diminish a tad but you’re right-he was one of the better blitzing safety’s in the league and a great tackler.
