Falcons take the 5th spot in PFT preseason power rankings

Matt Ryan AP

The Falcons took care of the stigma of not winning a playoff game last year.

What they weren’t able to do this offseason was take care of all the problems they’re facing.

With the return of Tony Gonzalez and the addition of Steven Jackson, the Falcons should have one of the best offenses in the league. Quarterback Matt Ryan’s due a huge payday for good reason, as he’s a steady leader and one of the top passers in the game.

But until Ryan or Gonzalez or Jackson tackle somebody, the Falcons are going to have problems. Money and age have stripped them of playmakers on that side of the ball, and they’re crossing their fingers that some kids in the secondary step up, and that defensive end Osi Umenyiora finds his old form again.

That’s a lot to hope for, and if the defense can be just OK, the Falcons could be among the favorites this year.

You can read the full preview here, and tell us in the poll below whether we’ve accurately assessed the Falcons’ chances.

Is it just me or does every poll result for these power rankings have “Too high” as the top answer?

It’s about right for regular season, post season rank is 12.

Good lord, Falcons at #5?? I guess this poll is based on regular season projections. They shouldn’t be in the top 10.

They’re good but I don’t think they’re good enough to get past the 49ers or Seahawks to make the Super Bowl this year. The NFC is stacked.

About right don’t know if they’ll be there at the end, some suprise team always makes a run. Scary team on paper but lets see how this one plays out with injuries and such.

Hell you can give them the top spot. Won’t matter the FalCants will find a way to screw it up. That’s what they do. Rise Up to Fall Down

Interesting, both Seattle and Atlanta are ranked way too high, with QB’s that have only won one playoff game.

Hopefully my falcons (especially) the Defense let this franchise down especially tony gonzalez…. da hatred talk of matt ryan i get in to (some people i talk to dont even look at matt ryan as a Top #10 qb) dont kno the game of football & im tired of the “choke”talk i got faith in matt ryan i got faith in thomas dimitoff and i got faith in the young players coming in and i feel year by year we improve as a team and don’t count this year out……. Lets go Falcons #riseup

Their defense just isn’t quite good enough to get over the hump. Without a pass rush I don’t see that changing. I do love me some Matt Ryan though.

With a rare blown coverage the Falcons beat the Seahawks in the last seconds of that game.

Expect 8 wins from the 2013 Falcons.

It’s hard to repeat that kind of suckcess.

  13. saintmyfault says: Jul 22, 2013 4:23 PM

Honestly, I would rank them 4th…in the NFC South.

    1. 49ers
    2. Seahawks
    3. Packers
    4. Saints

    All before any AFC teams.

A team with what will probably be a worse oline than Green Bay and Chicago’s- and a defense that’s relying on Osi actually showing up and a running game relying on a beat up old guy that could flop in Atlanta this year…

    Totally a Top 5 Team.

There really needs to be a “WAY too high” button.

Falcons should own the crappy NFC south and secure hime field in the dome for post season. That puts them in the top 4 teams in my eyes.
